God people in here have a huge thing against trying for that cash, god forbid it be slightly important
I love industrial design, but if I really knew what was on the other side I'd have been an engineer
knowing totes heaps about 17th century art is cool and all, but I think that should be a hobby, hell it'd be a good one
Find something at University that will lead to a worthwhile career that intrigues you and plays to your skills that you think you might enjoy
Actively becoming a part of the debt statistic to stick it to the man doesn't strike me as any cleverer than becoming an accountant even if you may not enjoy it.

I am just dropping into this thread to let everyone know that my room mate drinks non-alcoholic beer!

this is one of the stupidest posts i've ever read
non STEM majors trying to stick it to the man! get a real skill! your passion is a hobby!
Got a non-STEM degree that is relevant to my career field, got me a job, got a minimal amount of debt. I don't understand the whole "only these specific degrees are employable" mentality. It's fucking anserine, is what it is. It's not like the choices are STEM or underwater basket-weaving, and that's it.
I am doing a double degree. Seems pretty common over here, you end up completing 2 3 year degrees in the space of 5 years as an undergrad, one to get you a job, one that you're interested in. Lots of people end up dropping one half of that when they've started to consider their options, but lots don't.
I guess that uni fees are less expensive over here compared to the US (I've got a cousin going to philladelphia, and holy fuck that was a lot of money that they're asking per year. One college that they visited when looking for stuff said that it costs them half a million dollars a year to educate a student, so the two hundred and fifty thousand they were asking was actually pretty reasonable? It was fucking insane.)
I do humanities and quite like it, and it may help me, it may not, but it's just something that interests me while I study to get a job. I'm probably going to try and get into a field that uses some of my humanities stuff.
Although, probably because of how subsidised it is, first year arts subjects are absolutely full of people, and the dropout rates are really high.
I got a science degree, mainly in order to support myself and my family. I went to a liberal arts college, and took a bunch of classes for funsies. Didn't bother to get a Minor in Latin even though I technically could have qualified for it (may have been 1 credit short- took a bunch of 2-credit classes to fill my schedule without going over the limit.) Took some of the more difficult humanities classes because I enjoyed them. Still stuck with chemistry and math for the jobs they ultimately lead to.
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
I moved to Texas with a few friends of mine... my buddy and his wife and their (now) 2 3/4 year old little girl (who is AWESOME). We play D&D every week and still BS about movies and what to do during the coming zombie apocalypse.
We get along pretty well, I think. We all take part of the house work. I've been finding myself REALLY enjoying doing the lawn work, though (plus is keeps the yard nazis off our back). So yeah... I think roommates are cool.
JJ and I are planning on buying a house soon, so the roommate situation may be coming to an end.. however my buddy is talking about buying a house in the same subdivision and very very close to eachother.
contrary to popular belief, it is not, in fact, all about the Benjamins.
Except there is a minimum level of Benjamins below which ones' life is ass, believe me, I've been there. When you are wondering where your next meal is coming from, perhaps art history should not be something you take out a bunch of loans for.
I guess i'll never convince you and you'll never convince me otherwise.
You are absolutely close-minded.
I'm impressed.
Because fulfillment matters nothing without money, right? Because there's zero value in loving what you do, right?
I'm sure my mom was very fulfilled scrubbing toilets to keep a roof over our head and food in our belly.
My only regret about college is that I went. If you go for anything other than a "high-end" degree like something medical or science related then you are absolutely wasting your time and building a terrible pile of debt. At least today anyway.
I honestly feel that if you work hard enough and smart enough, you will at the very least have a decent chance getting a job with any degree
nothing is guaranteed, of course. And some people will work very hard and not get a job.
But i think it's the height of arrogance to assume that somebody who gets a non-STEM degree will amount to nothing. There are plenty of STEM majors who won't amount to anything. Just because they chose to be a STEM major does not make them wise.
(I'm a STEM major, by the way)

That is a cool little anecdote/emotional jab that does not respond to what Baroque was saying at all
Just cause your mom couldn't find fulfilling work that also paid the bills doesn't somehow make pursuing a fulfilling degree and career worthless
