That review reads exactly like what I would expect from someone who was checking the boxes for "Is this the Latest HaloWarriorOfHonor". He could have written a shorter review by saying "This doesn't fit into what I expect a first person shooter to be, so it sucks".
I'm only bitching cause my man-wife is exactly that kind of player.
I love how he bitches about the long load times between maps, when that isn't even something that happens. It happened to me the very first time I loaded up the game, and then never again. So it means he only played the game for a total of like an hour before writing that review.

My load times haven't been that bad. Incidentally, one thing I like with NS2 is that if you join a server without already having the game running, it doesn't dick around loading other things, it dumps you straight to the connecting screen.

aha, holding down space lets you glide with lerk, but im still not good with it, very slow and get killed easy, need to learn to fly fast
Lerks have the hardest choice when it comes to Shift upgrades.
Adrenaline is great for being able to be liberal with your spore cover and catch a lot more marines in it and still fly away, but without Celerity your max speed isn't really as good as it should be. I prefer adrenaline myself because I've gotten pretty good at juking when under fire. Practice lerk flight in explore mode, you'll be amazed what you can pull off with it.
I don't think the learning curve on this game is really that steep, mechanics-wise. Maybe if you're commanding. Commanding is a little bit like chess. Not a lot like chess, but maybe a little. It doesn't take long to learn it, but it can take a while to be good at it.
But if you're a soldier/alien on the ground I think the biggest problem for new people is the complexity of the maps. People tend to get lost.
And as far as twitch-reflexes and mad skillz go, I've always enjoyed NS because you don't need them to do well. You've just gotta play smart.
For instance, I think a lot of people don't appreciate the value of hit-and-run with skulk. Especially when you've got leap. People try to stay in there and finish the marine off and that's what gets them killed, especially when marines have upgraded weapons and armor. When marines have upgraded weapons and armor skulks become less about killing and more about distraction. Marines are a lot easier for a Fade/Onos/Other Skulk to take out after I've taken a chunk of their armor and disappeared into the wind. This holds true when you're playing Fade also.
And needless to say, don't attack alone.
Unless you're just a super good skulk.
If you're a super good skulk then by all means, kill the shit out of that marine.
Anyone else really excited on how pretty much all the old NS1 maps are getting remade by fans? I've seen works in progress of Eclipse, Tanith, Bast, Hera, and even motherfucking NS_Nancy, Greatest Map Of NS1 History We Will Forever Mourn Its Loss.
Fucking YES. Nancy was the best map ever! It is true that they brought it back, albeit somewhat revised.
If they put a Nancy remake in NS2 I will probably get emotional. Nothing and Eclipse would also be great.

I always take Celerity, the main trick with dropping Spores is to not flap any more than absolutely necessary. The amount of energy that each flap drains adds up really fast when you're also using Spores. If you just continue to glide you can pretty much do 180 turns without losing any speed, and you have enough energy to drop a ton of Spores.

It's always tempting to over commit with Aliens, which is surprising because their skill sets tend to be designed around not having to over commit.

Also, not moving in groups is the worst idea. Teamwork is pretty critical in this game.
I second the idea to but [Penny Arcade] in front of scarytown. Tagging it with where our community comes from would be a good idea, and i personally look for servers that are more geared towards teamwork. Having a website, or clan name / tag, while not a direct indication all the time, is generally where I start playing first. My logic is the people who host it will be frequently in there, and if they play well and I enjoy it, i'll be back and hopefully more good matches.
We should also try boosting it up every night and get it populated. Just takes 4-5 people to sit in the game until people will start joining. Sooner we do this the more successful it will be longterm.
Helpful thing for alien players that I noticed while playing with pubbies: kill phase gates first when you are trying to take over an outpost.
If Phase Gate in an outpost, clear marines and sit on that warpgate and bite the shit out of it. Do this before power node. If you stack and chomp away on the phase gate, when a marine warps through you can adjust and kill him then get back on gate. Much more effective than letting the marines get positioned behind you and shoot you on the power node.
Had teammates just fail at this concept earlier. It can entirely turn a good alien push into a bust.

When clearing structures in an area:
If it's a forward base: Obs (to prevent bacon), phasegate, rest.
If it's just a res point: Extractor first because it is the part that actually costs the opposing team res to replace. Always assume that marines are coming to stop you so you won't have enough time to get both.
If it's the main base: Jesus christ kill the power so they can't respawn and their upgrades turn off and blaaagh you retarded onos stop chasing after random marines you are accomplishing nothing.

All else being equal, the biggest appeal of killing the power is that marines can't easily bring it back. Any other structure can just be rebuilt in a few seconds if there are survivors. But if the power goes out, it takes ages to repair, and any amount of additional pressure will clear them out before they can do it. But yeah if the room is empty, obs and phase come first.
I am thinking of picking this up myself. Is it pretty easy to get in games with full teams? It seems like some of the other indie fps games I have tried to get into have suffered from population issues. I respect what these guys did though and want to support them. Plus it looks fun.
Yea, so Scarytown will be changing server hosts soon...ish? To give you guys an idea of the hosts' support without going into a long spiel about it, I clicked cancel subscription about 6 hours ago and it's been full for the last couple and currently is as I type...

Hey, it takes a while for the hamster to travel from the Cancel button all the way through the tubes to the server.
This is honestly the most friendly competitive online environment I've seen. Even with brand new commanders who are ruining their side's chance to win the worse I've seen has been the non-acidic request to let someone else command. Usually it's friendly advice from the trenches on what to build, etc. etc. I know there is a command to eject a commander, but I've never seen it used.
Well, actually, I did see one marine get verbally abusive towards his commander, but the server told him to STFU.
This often makes for incredible confusion, and newbies are often left wondering what is going on, while experienced players largely ignore anyone colored green and shout unintelligible Natural Selection cant at each other as the bullets fly.
No lie, my first THREE proper games of NS tonight (Finally got it working decently). Not one of them where people weren't letting me know what to do, and didn't see any real rage either.
Definitely seeing more of a friendly community here than anywhere else. I think the reviewer just copy-pasted that line from one of a myriad other FPS's, because so far I'm not seeing it.
I think he accidentally played Dota instead of NS2
Or he managed to land on a bum server, I've encountered some people that managed to get all mad at their team, though to be fair, the team was terrible. When you've been told to go hit operations, you don't stop in the gap to kill the power node while the other onos gets wrecked because he didn't realize he was alone.

Well @Taranis caught me before I could get home and excercise my total lack of fiscal restraint by gifting me a copy!
And yeah, reading around I got the impression that the community was down there with the MOBA communities. I only even decided to check the thread on a whim when I saw there was a PA server.
Guess I'll be installing this and giving it a shot later.

It's very interesting.
All the bullshit of mapping for source games removed, I just have to learn how their face systems work and I think I could do it pretty easily.
I told you that 2 months ago. See how far ahead you would be if you listened to your elders?

Can I get an invite to the user group? http://steamcommunity.com/id/cavos/ I think it has to be by invite only?
not great, but not a guaranteed waste of res anymore.

Holy shit, Spark is a confusing engine when first looked at. I can see the benefits for modding, but...it's very hard to wrap your head around
