3 hours into the shift and we've done pretty much everything we can do
Now I need to appear busy for the next 5 hours otherwise the boss will find some bullshit job for us
Like cleaning
Do you have any idea how pointless it is to clean a steel mill?
Going from grunt to management did really weird things to my "oh we have some downtime, let me just stand here and relax and maybe talk to somebody for a minute" habit. In that none of my employees are allowed to have it

i just hope my new job goes well and i actually like working in a corporate environment, because if things pan out i could make a pretty solid career of working for Ricoh, especially if i get transferred to the branch i'd really like to work in given my education
i would adore job security, benefits and, most importantly, not having to job hunt for a very very long time
Mori, I think of you whenever I take over for our new guy. He has a newly minted baby, and as I am the one that trained him, I can make sure he gets home at a reasonable time. Also I'm hourly and he is salaried, so we both love this arrangement.

I've actually thought about taking a company job here and quitting the union.
But it would mean a pay cut and they are notoriously shitty to the bosses
I want to be a supervisor but only because of the better hours. And really my only responsibility would be making the schedule the other supervisor takes the heat for job performance.
Yeah the point is moot if you're not going to be moving into a supervisory role
I would argue that even if you don't want a career in the newspaper industry, a supervisor role would still be desirable because a) The experience b) You can put it on your resume, which is never going to hurt c) More money (I'm assuming?)
Actually, I have considered supervising pretty often. I like teaching people things, and I really enjoy trying to find effecient ways to handle work-loads. "I'll do this thing, so you can work on that thing."
How quickly do you get over the whole "I have to be the dick that fires people and/or denies PTO" thing? Because I don't know about that...
I remember when I had never worked in Development.
I had hope back then, and dreams, and pride. I even thought that somewhere good people existed and were happy.
ahhhh youth.
I've been in software development/programming/engineering/whatever they call it nowadays for only five years, now, since graduating. How long do you imagine I've got left before I become bitter, jaded and twisted?
(assuming i'm not there already. I DO take zoloft)

Jesus Christ on a cracker. If this idiot does one more shit bug ticket I will print them all up and shove them down his throat so he chokes to death on his own idiocy.

All true! I don't know about the money though. They'd probably just want to give me the title and responsibilities without a raise.
Ideally what I would do, I think, is if we could move back in with my parents I'd continue to work full-time and pay off my credit cards. Once those are paid off I'd work for maybe six months more to have enough money saved where I'd feel comfortable going part-time and going back to school full-time.

Well it's a case by case thing so it's hard to say and I don't know what you're tolerance for tough conversations is.

Got this winner today.
Customer says his tool doesn't work right.
Of course it was marked critical.
I remember when I did tech support at IBM there was one completely incompetent phone tech who made the worst tickets. I had to "coach" him several times and he was eventually fired for his ineptitude.
His tickets always had stuff written into them like "customer was extremely angry and rude and I explained that there was nothing I could do and to please use nicer language". Instead of actually fixing or describing the problem....
Yeah, no doubt the customer was fucking pissed, they got you on the phone, if I was them I would be livid too

About 30 seconds. About as long as it takes you to realize that you are now evaluated and paid based on the actions of these dirty fucking primates you have underneath you. When you were a shit-flinging monkey, you just had to skate under the radar to keep your job.
Now you have to be responsible for these shit-flinging retards, and by God they will do what I say or I will replace their insignificant little monkey asses.
BACK TO WORK. MAKE YOUR NUMBERS OR I WILL FIRE YOU. I DON'T CARE, I WILL END YOU AND GO TO LUNCH.
@lednah 5 years and you aren't bitter yet? those are some kick-ass meds you have.
I've been a serious manager for close to 15 years now. I still come across moments when my palms sweat, and my gut twists. This past month I had to terminate an engineer who had just come off maternity leave. It was a purely business decision. I was sorry her pregnancy was rough, I'm sorry you need more time, but I need an engineer in that desk.
When you can do that and not feel it, you have no business being a manager anymore.
@Stale maybe I'm not bitter because I'm not in a supervisory/team lead position yet (and dark gods willing, never will be). I'm one of the line grunts just trying to do my job right
I never do it right oh god crisis of confidence crisis of confidence

Had a JIRA defect raised today.
Fine, there's a code defect, it happens.
Except the code matches the requirements.
Query this.
Get response: "Haven't updated the requirements documentation yet"
Just spent 10 minutes explaining that that is not how it works. I don't care if you think it's wrong, it's not a defect unless it doesn't match requirements. If the requirements are wrong, what you are doing is raising a Change Request.
Which means it's not my budget and you can fuck right off with that 'defect' shit until you do your damned paperwork properly.
Goddamn people trying to get their backdoor fixes from my resources for free.

My dreams are currently just 'a job that pays okay and that isn't too stressful'
what do you spend a whole lotta time reading about on the internet just because you find it interesting or neat
Video games
And I am not an artist nor a programmer
So that's out
I just don't want to work at the newspaper for the rest of my life please god don't make me work here forever
It's ok, newspapers will probably go extinct before you're old enough to retire anyways.

Man, at least if new guy was sick today then I wouldn't have to stay any longer.
Yesterday was fine, just dammit, he picked the one fucking day of the week when it would be a huge inconvenience to me.
I'm still hourly, which really isn't bad, but still.
I've actually thought about taking a company job here and quitting the union.

Man that would suck
It really can. Because suddenly you are responsible for employees being super shitty at their jobs.
I read TFS as teefs and was wondering what alternate lifestyle practice was denoted by VS for a good 3-4 seconds.
