Here's a dumb question. I bought the original version of the game, will there be any kind of post-2.0 "free month" or something similar? After how bad 1.0 was, I'm not eager to just hand them money to play without experiencing the changes first-hand before that.
I can't tell you what is being made available for 2.0, but phase 4, so far, is going to be an open beta with characters transferring to release. I would suggest that you try to get into phase 4 so that you at least get a few days of trying out the game to see if it is something you are interested in.
Headed into the FFXIV panel at PAX, should be interesting.
[snip]
There certainly isn't a lack of interest.
Yeah I saw that line and decided I get better info from the beta testers who've been posting here.
On the positive side, when we got into the actual panel room there were beta codes on all the chairs that allegedly grant P2 access. So there's that.
Nothing really new discussed, and Yoshii P delivered comment via pre-recorded video which was sad.
I was watching online. Made it about half an hour in and then it just seemed to me all they were talking about was MMOs in general and showing concept art. Was there more beyond that?

I have been crazy busy IRL so took a bit of a pass last weekend as well as this one on beta PI. I may or may not do too much in PII since it mainly seems like controller testing and KBM is so good now I don't see a need to pull out the old xbox pad. This is saying a lot as 1.0 was infinitely better with the controller.

Eh. They showed trailers for the ffxi expansion and a trailer version of the ffxiv benchmark. They showed off the controller interface and how it worked in game. It was ok, just maybe not worth the hour wait.
The code, however, seems to work right now which was a nice surprise. My friend got a code that he probably won't use, I'll ask.

Probably the same here. I may end up playing PII just because I am at home on disability. If so, I'll try tank next time to see how much I like it. Did Healer this time around and it's not bad. Mainly waiting for PIII to see what all the big changes are they plan to make as per the beta roadmap.
I'm a KBM user, so all phase 2 offers me is basically phase 1 with a little new content. I figure I can test that new content along with phase 3 new content in phase 3, when the game will just about be ready to deliver.
I tell ya though... I got all this time off, I kind of wish the game was out now (more specifically, that the game already went through all the appropriate beta testing, not to release it in current state).
But oh well... guess I have a lot of LoL in the near future. As frustrating as that game can be, it's the only thing able to keep my attention for a couple years since WoW. I've considered trying out FFXI again, since I heard it's changed a lot, but I've heard it also is still very grindy and that there is a stigma that you have to have the perfect gear and job combinations if you want to do anything.
I think Grand Companies are being put in in phase 2 also, along with guildhests or whatever they're called now (sounded like Scenarios from WoW?).
I would have been a lot more interested in phase 2, except they did such a (really really good) number with KBAM controls with 2.0 that I don't feel like the game needs it at all. Well, you know, except for the people who end up playing on the PS3. :rotate:
I'm amazed that people are saying the KBAM controls are good for this. That was by far one of the worst things about FFXI and XIV for me. I'm so cautiously optimistic about ARR. Really hoping it turns out as good as it sounds like it might.

There is always a chance some of that stuff they intended in phase 2 will be pushed to phase 3. In which case, it sounds like phase 2 will really be targeting controller support. Even if I wanted to help test the controller, just to test, I don't own one.
KBAM controls for 2.0 are more or less what you think they should be. It's very 'modern' mmo-ish in its implementation and in general, if you think it should work a way (based on other MMO's) it probably does.
It's not going to change your world, but it is immediately accessible if someone has never played FFXIV before. You'd just sit down and it'd play just how you think it should (which couldn't be said for 1.0 or FFXI)
That's all I ever really wanted from FFXIV 1.0, at least in terms of the controls. Just to have it feel like an MMO, and copy what everybody else had already done right with the controls. Instead, it was like fighting against the interface to do anything. I'm glad to hear ARR has addressed that.
What Herpes said. In 1.0 I gave up after fighting with the UI and it winning. It could have been an amazing game beyond that, but I would never have made it there. In ARR the controls are what you have come to expect if you are a KBM MMO gamer, so you get to actually see what the game is all about.
ARR to me so far feels like a an old school MMO given some modern conventions and a fresh layer of polish that were just absent in 1.0. The game mechanics/system/UI no longer feel like an obstacle to playing the game, and they've added modern MMO convenience without the game feeling like a themepark MMO. It now feels like a logical next stop for FFXI players, where it didn't before.
I played about an hour and a half last night. I'm not exactly sure what the NDA allows/doesn't allow for discussion, so I'll keep quiet and just say that there are some big changes I like, some things they haven't changed that I wish they did, and some technical issues that I hope are the result of it being a Beta and not because my rig isn't up to code.
I even made a list of all the things I want to see changed/added that I'm planning to bring up in the beta forums. If it helps turn this game into the experience we've been promised, then I'll do my part.
I would post the changes ASAP. They lock the feedback threads like a day or two after the weekend ends.
Thanks, I'll be sure to get them out there today. Again, the technical concerns I have could easily be ironed out after the beta. But considering how FFXIV was literally unplayable for me (it crashed. a lot), I don't remind entirely confident about Square's ability to optimize this game.
One thing I would like to point out (and should be safe to do so) is that the tone is much more enthusiastic. It's something I immediately noticed, considering how I felt that the original FFXIV was incredibly cynical, almost to the point that it was practically telling the player "Why are you even fucking playing this? Get lost."
I recall specifically the bit where they ask you to practice using a gun, and before you even get a chance to fire it, some guy walks in, takes the weapon away and practically kicks you out of the door.
And you never get to use a gun in the game. Ever.
That plus other douchebag-y responses from NPCs (like the Chocobo vendor) just added to the overall miserable experience that Square and Yoshi-P are trying so very hard to wipe from your memory.
I think the idea of the attitude of NPC's in 1.0 was that 'adventurers' were kinda viewed with disdain among the general public in-game, so as far as everyone was concerned you were just some useless shit.
Why they went that direction though, I have no clue. In XI only like the Elvaan royalty treat you that way, and even they warm to you pretty damn fast. The common folk and most of the other factions are very accepting of adventurers because they're the only way anything is getting done in the world because the factions have more or less walled themselves up in inaction when you enter the game; so the public is happy to have help, most factions are happy to have people to do work that aren't behind any red tape.
It was certainly a different perspective...
But with the world being destroyed by Bahamut, it seems like the NPC's in ARR have kind of adopted that XI attitude of "oh thank god someone to get something done".
It'll be interesting to see how the quests in Limsa and Ul'dah end up being once they're put in, if they're as 'friendly' as Gridania.
Though, Limsa, in general, was full of more asshats (NPC's) in 1.0 than the other cities so...EDIT: I think they were trying to go with a "Pirates are hardasses, so suck it up" thing but missed the mark and went straight to dick.
That's pretty much it, yeah. Sure, I don't expect a bunch of pirates to herald my arrival as "the chosen one" or anything, but after several hours of being treated like shit and not even allowed to do anything you start to wonder "what is my role in this game?". And when you finally do get accepted by a group, it's with the added pretext of "We're pretty shitty ourselves, so we're the only people pathetic enough to take you in". Having a game where your very purpose as an adventurer is spat on by every character you come across really kills your motivation, especially when the actual game is hardly fun to begin with.
ARR smartly offers more variety. You're given a much warmer welcome, but are also viewed as an unnecessary burden by a very specific faction (thus giving you proper context whenever one of those guys sneers at you). Yet when it comes to the very basic "Hey I'm a new adventurer and I want to go slay some creatures", you're given the opportunity right away and with some level of expectation.
They also cut down on the pirate slang by a good 75%, thank God.
I left my feedback in the forum. Not sure how much of that will get noticed by the higher-ups, but if the problems persist in the other phases I'll be certain to continue voicing them.
Oh, and I nearly forgot the first major story beat, where your character stumbles upon a bunch of murdered corpses near a lighthouse, and sees from the distance a person you've met briefly before (in the same place where they took away your gun) chatting up with a mysterious cloaked figure. Keep in mind both of them are also wade deep in corpses around their feet.
Your character immediately waves his hands around in what can only be seen as a moment of utter stupidity, to which the game even acknowledges.
So to recap, your first 2-3 hours of FFXIV has been:
1. Getting rejected by nearly every notable faction
2. Having your potentially cool weapon taken away from you and kicked to the curb
3. Finally taken in by the one group who is as comically inept as you, to which you are finally given your first actual field quest: an escort mission where you fight exactly three bugs.
4. Acting like a complete buffoon without your control just to arouse ignorance in the storyline
I have every intention of starting a character in Limsa once it's added to the beta phases.
"Avast, new Adventurer! Welcome to Limsa Lominsa, the sailing capital of Eorzea! What say ye to a new life of high seas thrills and battles amongst your trusted crew of armed pirates? Sounds fun? Terrific, here's your honorary pistol! Let us set sail for excitement and glory!"
To be fair to the npcs, I would also be a dick to adventurers when the entire story had you, as an adventurer, go around mind-raping people every other quest. I mean, how much mind-raping must go on before an NPC should just say no

Man, what?

Eek, $100m loss. Honestly the way things have been for them for a while, it's surprising it took this long for Wada to be shown the door. Here's hoping they can turn it around.
Former FFXI and original FFXIV beta player here (think I actually played with a few people on these boards during that time), looking for a new MMORPG to play. I originally played FFXI for four or five years after the NA launch and really enjoyed it, particularly the social and community aspect of it. I tried WoW some after FFXI started to die off, but it just wasn't the same. Too isolated and solo oriented for my taste. So I'm just wondering, for those of you who played FFXIV the first time around (or are in the beta now, I guess) does FFXIV keep the more communal feeling of FFXI?

It is too early for communities to have formed in FFXIV.

They sure don't look happy.
But FF fans don't really have a lot to be happy about these days.
But perhaps FFX/X-2 HD, the proper re-launch of FFXIV and (hopefully) the re-branded Versus will begin the healing process.

I appreciate the sentiment.
And I also appreciate the individual who just now sent me a beta code, to which I'm now currently downloading the client.
That person wishes to remain anonymous, but you know who you are, and your classiness surpasses the heavens. :^:

I didn't play 1.0 based on the lack of good KBM controls (was in 1.0 beta). I am quite interested in ARR. Take from that what you will.
