I have zero sympathy for invaders. Bowing to me does not counterbalance potentially making me redo a significant portion of an area because I haven't reached the next bonfire. I'll use every dirty trick, every cheesy tactic and unfair advantage to kill an invader in such a situation. I'll shank you mid-bow if possible.
Shanking an asshole mid-bow with a Forward + R2 Great Sword Leap never, ever gets old.

I prefer a Crystal Soul Spear to the face, but that works too. Just wait until I get Pursuers.
God fucking invaders who are cheating are such BULLSHIT. I just got invaded in Dark Root Garden by some dude who every time I nailed him took zero damage. I don't mean a shield block either, I'd get him mid roll and nothing. So lame, fuck you Dark Bohemian, whoever you are.
If someone hits me mid-bow they're honorless scum and I start using every consumable I have.
Poison Throwing Knives, Dung Pies, Poison/Lightning weapon enchants, Humanity healing, etc.
Urgh. I really do think Sif is my worst boss. He's supposed to be easy, right? I just have so much trouble with his tells, and then all my stamina is gone, and then I'm dead.
Are the Dragon covenant toys worth playing with at all? I've finally cashed in enough scales for the torso gem, and I'm just about ready to make the sunbro's my permanent covenant now. But I'm bored and I thought I might tool around with this stuff before I do.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
And a brief tooling around in the archives says... no, no it's not worth it. Even against things that are weak to fire, the fire breath alone does piddly. The whole thing looks cool as hell, but nothing worth losing my entire set of armor over.

Depends on your build. If you can take a blow from him and he stays there, you've got lots of free hits. Trick to him is stay close.
Go human, summon two or three dudes, put some kind of resin on your weapon, and get right underneath of him and just wail on him. Or circle behind him and blast him pyromancies.
Phew, Manus is down. For me, it really came down to not blowing endurance on big hits - little one-handed swings with the Claymore beat him down eventually, and gave me enough time to dance away and keep distance from his bigger hits and spells. No idea how I would have survived sans pendant, though. Sif was useless - he distracted Manus for a short while, but then got hit by a couple spells and just sat in the corner, watching me get pounded. Thanks a lot, buddy.
Is Tranquil Walk of Peace bugged or quirky somehow? Because going purely by the description, I would expect it to be a powerful weapon in the metagame.
If someone hits me mid-bow they're honorless scum and I start using every consumable I have.

Eh, if you're the one invading, the invaded have zero obligation to treat you as anything else than an utter cunt who's come to impede their progress in the game, and deserving of only scorn. Honor does not enter into it, the invader is always the scum.
That only applies if the invasion occurs in a shitty place, with few bonfires far between, that won't be fun to go through again. Someone there is probably in human form in order to be able to summon help for a boss.
Now, if we're talking about PVP hotspots like the forest, then it's a different issue. One should expect to get invaded there, and as such the approach should be different. Still, I know I hated trying to get through that bit, getting constantly murdered by invaders before I could reach the Moonlight Butterfly in the beginning. Knowing now that it's pretty much the early PVP central, and being somewhat capable of defending myself now, I'll abide by the "rules" there. Before that, my only experience with invaders was twinked out douchenozzles who could not wait to grief newbies with hilariously overpowered gear.
Honestly, the game really should have a setting for "Invaders:Y/N?", and being hollow is not the answer if you want to summon help. I did a few invasions, but I don't particularly enjoy it. It was clear the people I invaded were just even more inexperienced than I was, and desperately trying to get ahead, so I just dropped them some stuff and left. Most invaders seem to be griefers and/or twinks, and have little courtesy towards people trying to progress in the game, and who get all butthurt when someone doesn't abide by their "honor". Fuck 'em.
Yeah I got invaded in blightown on my first playtrough, and he killed me right in front of the bonfire I could not light. Since then I have always been in the camp of "f u invaders" in earlier areas. In anor londo and forward, I don't mind at all.
And a warning to all PC players, if you change your gamertag on GFWL, your saves will not be recognised by the game.
I just learned this as I changed my tag right before I was to enter the DLC area for the first time... So sad.

All you have to do is copy your saves to the new gamertag's folder. Both will be under my documents/NGBI/Dark Souls. Just copy the file from the old tag's folder to the new tag's. Worked fine for me.
Third character, I get invaded right after opening the shortcut gate in front of the Bell Gargoyles' church. Demon's Spear, Avelyn, the whole works. I'm wearing my starting gear, mind, all completely unupgraded.
I've never won against an invader, but I don't mind them at all. It gives you lots of unique encounters that you'll definitely remember, for good or for bad.
Can't believe how long it's taking to get 10 medals.
Quelaag is really easy so I wouldn't even try to get summoned there. It's just not a popular summoning location. I got 8 medals helping with the Gargoyles at level 25 just from Solaire.
Depends on your build. If you can take a blow from him and he stays there, you've got lots of free hits. Trick to him is stay close.
No matter what, that doesn't really help. I'm just...REALLY bad with him.
The thing about Sif is that it has exactly one attack you need to worry about. All the others, even with low endurance or defense, don't hit that hard, no matter how painful they look. The one to watch for is the slow double spin. It pauses for a moment, then spins with the sword a bit slower than normal. That move does really extreme damage and hits twice, making it very likely to guardbreak and kill you, or just one-shot you. However, it, and most of its other attacks, have a recovery period where you can attack. Also, most of Sif's combos can be freely avoided by rolling underneath it.
Third character, I get invaded right after opening the shortcut gate in front of the Bell Gargoyles' church. Demon's Spear, Avelyn, the whole works. I'm wearing my starting gear, mind, all completely unupgraded.
He shut the gate and then destroyed me.
Dick.
Dick.
But did he bow? That makes it honorable, and alright.
Beat the Gaping Dragon, did all of Blighttown, beat Queelag with @heenato's help, and started Sen's Fortress.
Funny story. Trying to get to the Boss Door to summon @heenato I was invaded and brutally murdered by the same jerkoff twice in a row. It was infuriating. She had some crazy weapon that made me bleed as well as a second sword that was on fire. I didn't stand a chance.
The third time I turned human? I made it to the fog door and waited for heenato to drop his sign, when I noticed the SAME PERSON had a summon sign down. I didn't touch it, but what... did she feel bad about screwing me over twice and wanted to help?
Anyway, my current plan is to find and grab the covetous ring from Sen's then backtrack a bit to try and kill the Black Knights in Burg and Parish. Maybe farm some shards to +5 my bow and Elite Knight armor.
Two Questions
1) I'm currently loving my +5 Balder Side Sword, and am considering upgrading it further. Is that worth the chunks or should I save them for a better weapon? Also what's the deal with the different upgrade paths?
2) At what point should I be going after Laurtec? I want me some revenge. I don't know WHY he murder the fire keeper chick, but it was a dick move.

Oh, yeah. Yeah. He bowed.
Right after ripping my heart out and shitting on my chest cavity.
Though I suppose the cost of all the lightning bolts he wasted on me tripled the amount of souls he got... so I won, I guess?
Eh. Personally I just tended to spend most of my time Hollowed, so I didn't see a lot of invasions at first. I wasn't interested in PVP at all and all my first experiences were absolutely terrible (dudes with Chaos Blades camping the Parish bad), so I just went screw it. It's not like this is an amazingly impossible game to solo or anything - about the only bosses that are a bit of a bitch to solo that get all that easier by summoning people are Capra and the Terrible Two, and there don't really seem to be a lot of people invading at Capra.
Now I spend most of my time human because eh, I no longer mind if people chaos Blade my face. I still tend to go around Hollow in areas that are annoying to navigate (Tomb of Giants and so on) though.

In most cases I feel the same, but god, I just want to face off against someone whose R1 doesn't deal more damage than forty of mine combined. And I was human because I have this compulsive need to kindle every single bonfire I come across even if I know I won't need the extra estus.
Of course that isn't a problem with my main, but I'm not using my main. I'm using a guy with a +0 scimitar.
1) I'm currently loving my +5 Balder Side Sword, and am considering upgrading it further. Is that worth the chunks or should I save them for a better weapon? Also what's the deal with the different upgrade paths?
@APODionysus
I would upgrade it as far as it will go with titanite shards and large titanite shards, which is probably +9 or +10. Both of those shards are easily acquired so feel free to use them. I wouldn't use any titanite chunks until you're certain it's something you're using for keeps.
As for upgrades, you could run through the catacombs and pick up the great scythe which has the same scaling but higher base damage and a bleed effect. You'll also get the regular scythe and ricard's rapier in Sen's Fortress which are strong alternatives for a DEX build.
After Sen's Fortress you will have the opportunity to get Priscilla's dagger and the lifehunt scythe which are incredibly strong DEX weapons that have a bleed effect that removes 50% of their total hp instantly.
I'll try and give a brief description of the upgrades paths:
Normal (+15) - Increases the base damage values, retains scaling grades. Scaling grades may improve with level (e.g Baldur Side Sword will eventually change from a B to an A for DEX based bonus damage).
Raw (+5, +5 Raw) - Raw reinforcement has the largest increase in base damage but completely nerfs the attribute scaling. As such, Raw weapons are the strongest for low level characters or high level characters with no increases in damage scaling stats.
Divine (+5, +10 Divine) - Divine reinforcement adds moderate Faith scaling to weapon damage but decreases the scaling from STR and DEX. It also splits the weapons damage between Physical and Magical (STR/DEX will increase the physical portion, Faith will increase the Magic portion).
Magic (+5, +10 Magic) - Similar to Divine, Magic adds moderate Intelligence scaling to weapon damage but decreases the contribution from STR and DEX. It splits the weapon damage between Physical and Magical.
Enchanted (+5, +5 Magic, +5 Enchanted) - A more extreme Magic upgrade. Gives a larger INT scaling than Magic reinforcement but also brings a larger decrease in contribution from STR and DEX.
Lightning (+10, +5 Lightning) - High base damage, but no attribute scaling whatsoever. 50/50 split between physical and lightning damage.
Fire (+5, +10 Fire) - High base damage, but no attribute scaling whatsoever. 50/50 split between physical and fire damage.
Chaos (+5, +5 Fire, +5 Chaos) - Like Fire, but adds damage scaling based on current Humanity (caps at 10).
Crystal (+10, +5 Crystal) - Similar to Raw but bigger base damage boost. Reduces durability to 10% of original and cannot be repaired.
The type of titanite they use depends on the upgrade path. The main thing to note is that Titanite Slabs, which are required for the final level of reinforcement for each pathway, are generally limited to 1 per playthrough. So never full upgrade a weapon until you are sure it's the one you want.
Then there are some special cases:
Boss - Weapons forged from boss souls, they require a specific type of weapon reinforced normally to +10 as well as the relevant boss soul. E.g. Any +10 Spear and the Soul of the Moonlight Butterfly will allow you to create the Moonlight Butterfly Horn. They only go to +5 and require Demon Titanite to upgrade. Each level of reinforcement tends to be a bigger increase then normal reinforcement.
Dragon Weapons - Reinforced with Dragon Scales to +5.
Unique - Any 'special' one of a kind weapon or armour that isn't forged from a boss soul. They go to +5 and are reinforced with twinkling titanite (you will get an easy and unlimited supply of this when you reach the crystal caverns).
TL;DR - If you're playing a STR and/or DEX based character you want to stick with Normal reinforcement, and only use the others for a special case E.g. Divine weapon for the catacombs. You'll also use Boss/Dragon/Unique as and when appropriate E.g. DEX based build will want Priscilla's Dagger, a Boss soul weapon.

I heard Hidden Body completely prevents Pursuers and Soul Masses from firing.
It shouldn't.
Pre-nerf fog ringers still pulled Soulmass shots.
As long as we're on the topic of PvP, I'm just going to chime in with what a dick move it is to invade people in the New Londo Ruins and how much I enjoy it.

I have never regretted maxing the Balder Side Sword out. It's a very strong weapon and there's nothing in the game that straight up outclasses it. +15 is best if you want to use another enchantment source (resins, magic weapon, etc.), Fire/Lightning do the best damage with low dex, Enchanted/Occult scale best with Int/Faith but if you're an int build you probably want to use the Moonlit Greatsword anyways.
I'm 99% sure I've gotten hit by Soul Masses that fired after I used hidden body
Ugh. Anyone around level 44 want to help me with Sif? I just don't have a build that's very good against him, since he just wrecks my stamina and then kills me, so I REALLY cant get close. So I need someone to distract him while I shoot sorceries at him.
Is my level 25 in range of that? Can't play for at least 30m though and you're guaranteed to get invasions going through there human.
I killed him on my first character with pyromancy and by staying underneath him as much as possible, where you are basically safe. If you fight him to the right of where you start you can corner him in and it's much easier to stay between his legs there.

Out of curiosity, was this person a girl, not wearing any armor, and have a sack over her head?
It's so awesome to see people fail the Turing test with this game. Protip: If the invader has an actual proper name and not your average XXCoolguy69X tag, it's always a predetermined NPC. And in your case, you should have summoned her. She's pretty awesome against Quelaag.
