Because it doesn't count towards the achievement/real platinum god if you get it in a challenge

My friend is working on a roguelike game you can play if you want to. (It has free demo)

    Oh, right. Yeah that's unfortunate.

    Daily Spelunky Challenge!

Made it all the way to King Yama!

Took out both of his hands!

Then got hit by rubble and fell on spikes. :(

I was 21st on the leaderboard! This is the best I've ever done in the game.

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

When Nethack was the only other roguelike I had ever played, Angband was refreshingly straightforward. But in time I decided that it was mostly just kind of bloated and grindy. It has aged poorly, in my opinion. There are like a thousand variants, but they all have pretty much the same problems. (Although I do have a little bit of a soft spot for Steamband for some incomprehensible reason.)

That...shouldn't have happened. It's a weird URL; maybe the forums don't like it.

    angband.oook.cz/steamband/steamband.html

It doesn't really solve any of the overall structural problems with Angband, but the Victorian theme is kind of interesting and it has a skill system that's a lot more robust than most variants. It also has a handful of unusual mechanical systems (like firearms, or player survival being a mix of short-term HP and longer-term wound accumulation).

So I had another good run going.

    Did pretty much everything right.

Ended up making the hole for Olmec too wide and ran out of bombs.

He ended up sinking just to the right of the door to Hell.

There's a cute little roguelike named One Way Heroics on sale on Steam right now for the princely sum of 69 cents. Its gimmick is that the world is in the process of being destroyed from the left, and you're sprinting through the wilderness in a mad panic to keep ahead of the darkness, scavenging and looting whatever you can before it's obliterated a few seconds later.

It isn't the deepest roguelike out there mechanically, but it's fast-paced and charming, and it has a surprising amount of content for the ridiculously tiny price. There are a bunch of classes and skills, and you can bump into and befriend AI-controlled party members who each have their own little side story if you live long enough and meet the right conditions.

I'd say it's a reasonable contender for Best Game You Can Buy For Less Than The Amount Of Change Currently Inside Your Sofa.

Very nearly made it to Hell Again today.

Sadly, I can't seem to get to Olmec with enough bombs to do the job.

And the god damn game refuses to fucking put any in the 10 boxes in the rafters lately.

I get to level 16 with over 100k gold (due to not a single shop in the temple) and only one bomb.

I have to use that one to get access to two of the boxes.

    What do I get?

Four Ropes, Two Parachutes, one fucking climbing gloves (Which I already had) and one set of bombs.

I end up dead after spending minutes maneuvering around, because Olmec squashed me into the side of the hole with maybe two layers left.

    Ah well.
