The Six Mouths Present: WAR-Paint, the Contest

The drums of WAR (Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, the MMO in development by Mythic) have risen in volume as armies gather. WAR is on the horizon, and the forces of Destruction that inhabit the PA forums are emerging, recalling ancient pacts of blood and souls. The Six Mouths are opening, and they are hungry.

In order to do my part and properly serve the Six Mouths, I'm holding a contest. I want you to paint the coolest WAR inspired miniature you've ever dreamed of. And then I want to see pictures of it. If I deem your miniature the mightiest and most badassed of all entrants, I'll send you a prize. What prize (besides everliving glory, which will assuredly come as well) could be worth the Herculean effort required to win? I'm going to pre-order a copy of WAR and have it shipped to your house. Your awesome mini will earn you a ticket to the Six Mouths Train of Hoary Doom, next stop ass-kicking town!

Any contest this cool must have rules. So here are mine:

1) All entries must be submitted to this thread.

2) All entries consist of at least 4 photographs
-1 of the model unpainted with a sign of some sort to indicate the date and the Six Mouths name.
-1 of the model finished with a sign of the date and the Six Mouths name.
-2 other shots of the finished model.
-Other shots are encouraged. The more angles you get, the more awesome I get to judge.

(Edit: Great tips for taking high quality pictures of your minis can be found here: http://forums.privateerpress.com/index.php?showtopic=5813)

3) All contestants must be registered users of the PA forums.

4) The miniature must be assembled and painted by you specifically for this contest. No models done by friends, and no models previously done will be accepted. This is why you need to take an in progress shot with a date and the Six Mouths sign in order to qualify.

5) This rule sucked. You can do whatever kind of Warhammer model you want. It's way more awesome if it's something from WAR, but anything Warhammer is awesome and deserves a chance to be judged.

I think that's it. I reserve the right to amend these rules at any time. I will be the sole judge.

The contest begins today, March 14th and ends September 3rd (date updated).
So, get painting! The Six Mouths hunger.

    This is awesome.

    You are awesome.

The only fantasy minis I have are from the warboss boxed set. Could I make a boar-mounted ork for this? I don't know if they have to be exact units from the game.

Not exact units, just inspired by. A boar mounted orc would be great. There are Black Orc and Choppa classes, either of which will likely be able to ride a boar. Adding in cool mounts, weapons, opponents (hello battle scenes) is all fine by me. Things like Dwarf Slayers and Orc Shamans are borderline, since those classes aren't in the game (no slayers and only goblin shamans).

I'm looking to be wowed by awesome, and maximum customization is what this contest is all about. Take a mini, and make it WAR-worthy. The Six Mouths demand to be fed only the tastiest of morsels.

In my defense, I was just trying to avoid a situation were three people submitted super shite models for the competition. Since it's obvious there's some real level of interest happening, I'm perfectly fine yanking that line out. I just didn't want to obligate myself in case the contest totally bombed and somebody took a picture of a model they dipped in frosting or something.

You'd probably get a larger and wider variety of entries without the race and unit restrictions as well; We've got maybe a dozen active WHFB painters on the forums (including Jam's Orc set and me as of last week), and I doubt they'll want to go buy a $15 mini for a Six Mouths contest that isn't even posted on The-Six-Mouths.

For the record, Slayers are in the game, I vaguely recall being even obtainable as playable, just not a selectable 'class'. Lots of stuff is otherwise in the game as well: Skaven, Beastmen, Giants, etc etc.

4 months is a long time, and you are pretty likely to get a badass entry in that timeframe even without a prize, so I'd remove it.

I'd enter, but if I see a warhammer world populated by net speaking MMO obsessives, a small part of the magic of warhammer will be lost to me forever.

Well, on the one hand I'd like to see more entries, on the other it would just become a model contest. This one is all about theme. I wanted to see what people want their WAR characters to look like.

One of the reasons I'm doing this is because I want new people to go out and try this out. It's one model and some paint. It's a good time. What's to stop Joe Somebody from G&T from trying this out, since he's kind of interested in Warhammer anyways? Or give some of the 40K painters a chance to stretch out in a different direction.

Edit: I went ahead and pulled the "No prize disclaimer." There's obviously some interest here.

    No Slayers in WAR? D:

I may be interested in this. No undead either? Jeez..
However, since the deadline is so far away, I still think I could do this.

Since I've got some models I bought in January that aren't even primered yet, I thought I'd set the schedule to something even I could hit. I may not be eligible to win, but I plan on participating anyways. I need to do some shopping and figure out what my options are though. :)

I encourage people to post frequent updates with photos and ideas. Seeing other people's progress is encouraging and will help people with their own work.

Would a statue of a WAR-playable race count? Just like to know for future-purchase reference, as I had a terrain project in mind.

I don't see why not. That's exactly the kind of cool creative thing I was hoping to see.

Edit: I'm in the planning stages of my own conversion. I want to do a goblin shaman, which is pretty small so I need to be sparse when it comes to adding things in.

My initial thought is to start out with this model (on the left):

    newimage.asp?Size=A&Img=215568

I plan on removing the sword/dagger from his hand and replacing it with a few dwarf beards that he'll be holding up as trophies. I also plan on planting him on top of a Dwarf Oathstone that's covered in greenskin graffiti. I'm tempted to try and do my first large scenic base for this, as a goblin standing on top of an oathstone surrounded by dead dwarfs and dwarf parts would be pretty cool, and very WAR.

Edit2: Spent a few seconds in MSPaint to come up with a working picture of what I'm leaning towards now. Not super flashy, but a cool Goblin Shaman none the less I think.

Oh man, my fanatics are PERFECT for this (I know they aren't a playable race, but whatever).

I already did a tiny bit of modifying to them already, I hope that won't disqualify me (I can't afford to go purchase new ones).

Not at all. I don't want people to worry about b eing disqualified for stuff--if your mini is from one of the 7 races playable in WAR, you're all set. Keeping it character themed is encouraged, but if feel the need to creatively go outside the bounds a bit, go wild.

Man. I like that guy's dwarf models so much that I'm considering getting one for this.

I don't know if that would hurt me in the long run, though, as mostly the only things I'd change on him would be the base.

I got the slayer about a month back. One of the best damn models I've ever seen. I've mostly finished the pinning and stuff, but i'm waiting till I have a great painting plan before I prime him.

Shame my dwarf army is too small to sensibly incorporate him at the moment.

I hate to post whore in my own contest thread, but if you're looking for some tips on painting Felix's slayer hero, this thread on Warseer has a pretty awesome step by step paint guide: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71379

That is some solid painting, and I intend on using his 7 layer skin tone technique. It looks fantastic.

question - any guns in the game at all? Like old rust-bucket blunderbusses and shit? I've got a great model I'm thinking of using, but he's got an old rickety looking rifle thing. I believe it was originally a 40k model or possibly Gorkamorka, but I think it would work for this.

    Yeah, that was a yes.

I was planing on using Carnival Henchman 1 as a base, but I can't think of too many good conversions to do..

I kind of want to know how this is going to be scored. Is it more about converting than painting or is it about equal or what? Because there are some really nice models in the fantasy line already that could be used without any real conversions.

Maybe the gun could be converted a bit into a looted Dwarf weapon? Because Orcs don't have that kind of technology themselves, but guns are prevalent among Dwarfs and the Empire.

Started some chopping on the warboss body. Going to use the 2h arm with the main haft that you attach either a banner or the head of a greataxe to and reposition it a bit so he leans it over his shoulder.

I think I want him to point straight ahead with his other arm. Anyone know if there are any finished such arms, or do I have to sculpt something?

How scoring will work: I'll pick my favorite finished model. Do you need to convert anything? Not at all. Conversion, in my experience, tend to add a bit of awesome to a lot of models. There are also some models out there that are awesome all on their own.

It's the final product that counts. The model, basing, and paint job all factor in. This isn't a conversion contest, just an awesome model contest.
