The guy I was talking to was a native spanish speaker also, he just happened to be born in Catalunya, so I mentioned it as a possible reason that his (fluent) Spanish differed from Maritza's, in the context of saying that obviously I wouldn't generalise to say that 'spanish speakers can't hear b vs v'.
