So, this is a scam. Now what?

Okay . . . I am apartment hunting, and saw an extremely cheap apartment on Craigslist. The guy emailed me a renter's form to fill out, which I did and emailed back. But now--without my having seen the apartment or even met him--he is talking about how he is out of the state now but send me the papers and the key to the place, after I make a deposit of a couple hundred dollars.

Scaaaaam!

My question is . . . first of all, should I be worried about identity theft? Should I contact the credit bureaus or anything? I did not send over my SSN or bank account or such, but did send my DOB, place of birth, name, and address. (The form itself was a generic one that is listed on a generic "hey small landlords, download forms for free here" type site.)

Second, is there anyone I should report this to? I mean, he has not scammed me out of anything at this point, but it is pretty obviously a scam IMO. I do not have an address for this person, but he did give me a (toll free) phone number. Possibly I could get an address if I play along.

Flag it on Craigslist and report it to the police if you feel so inclined. Do not play amateur sleuth.

Also, it's highly unlikely they're going to do much with that minimal amount of information. I wouldn't worry about it. This is on the level of "Nigerian princes" and "I'm buying this to send to my son at college, I'll send you a money order and you ship it to Colorado blah blah blah".
