Bah. Go back, or try another.

    Better than bland food.

Oh I'll keep looking, I need to find a good place... it has to be here somewhere. But all I've found in two years is "markets" that sell only pasta, preserved fish, mochi, candy and bubble tea. Nothing fresh, nothing exciting.

    I have recipe request: Waffles

I've been using Bisquik forever because, well, that's what I've always used. Finally a lightbulb went on and said "dude...you should make these from scratch too." "Oh..good idea!" Well I've tried a couple of recipes I found. One of them came out to mushy, another had a bad taste. I'm terrible at cooking this kind of food if I don't do it from a recipe so I need a good recipe.

    Sweet or savory?

I have no idea. I don't know what those terms mean in reference to waffles.

Same thing sweet or savory mean in reference to any other food.

    *blink*

    OK

    2 cups flour
    2 tablespoons sugar
    1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 eggs
1/2 stick of unsalted butter, melted
    1 3/4 cups buttermilk
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

OK, sift your dry together and set aside. Mix the remaining together and add the dry to the wet until it comes together.

Melt a little butter on your iron first, it makes a difference in the crust.

I honestly could not tell you what savory means. I always thought it was just another word for tasty.

I do have some glaring blind spots in my cooking ability and vocabulary.

  • SyphyreSyphyre A Dangerous Pastime Registered User regular
And thanks Stale. The note about buttering the iron is interesting. I'll give that a shot.

Ah, when you said you didn't get what they meant in reference to waffles, that implied you understood the terms but just didn't get how they applied specifically to waffles. Essentially, savory is shorthand for "not sweet". So a crepe filled with banana and nutella would obviously be sweet, but a crepe filled with ham and gruyere would be savory.

Reminds me of when Jess and I were in Maui a few months back and asking for savory cocktails aside from the standards like gin & tonic usually just met with confused looks from servers. Savory? Uh..our mai tais and dacquiris are very popular?

I really stated that poorly, yeah. Thanks Druhim for the explanation.

Now, that said, I've never entertained the idea of a savory waffle, and this is intriguing. I'll happily take a recipe like that to try.

I'm sure Stale has some recipes that he's actually made, but this looks pretty good: http://www.azgrabaplate.com/2012/12/savory-waffles-with-ham-cheddar-and-brussels-sprouts.html

As someone who lived there for about six years, this doesn't surprise me at all. Curious though, where was the bar? Kihei? Lahaina? Paia?

It wasn't any one establishment. Pretty much anywhere along the NW shore, the focus was tropical cocktails. I'm sure there are places that recognize that savory cocktails are also delicious, but in an area so focused on tourism it's not terribly surprising they tend to cater to tourists wanting fruity drinks.

    Hm. I don't know that I'd qualify a G&T as a sweet drink.

Gimlet? Sure. But G&T? Hm. Hm, I say.

I think he's putting G&T into the savory class.

Why are you doing that, stop doing that.

I'm roasting a pork loin tonight, accompanied with a roasted brussels sprouts, leek, and shiitake mushroom side. I haven't looked forward to a dinner like this in a while.

It's always nice when you happen upon a recipe that's easy to make, quick to cook, and tastes great. Today I got lucky when I tried to make some baked scallops

Yup. Food often seems to taste better when you're not making it and it's a loved one doing so.
