This show is excellent. I'm upset I missed the premiere though.
I just bought the first season, and re-watching it is so good. I have had "Life Is A Funny Proposition After All" stuck in my head since finishing it though.
I caught part of the new years (special?) episode, having not realized it was starting back up already and was confused how I could have forgotten so much of an episode completely already. Didn't get to really pay close attention to it much though, which is probably just as well since I didn't get to start at the beginning.
It sounded like that wasn't the first episode at least, but was leading into it, which seemed kind of strange. Maybe I misunderstood.
Love this show.
edit: also one of the few serial shows both my father and I enjoy, so that's nice too.

Tonight, I caught part of an episode focused around New Years Eve. But it was billed as a lead-in to the actual first episode of the new season. I'm not sure if I misunderstood that point or not, as I did not get to focus my attention on it.
It seemed weird to save a pre-season lead-in for literally just before airing the first episode of the season.
To attach a question: did I understand that right? Or was that actually the first episode?
Or perhaps I really did just completely forget the contents of an older episode that they re-aired before the new season.

There was an episode on at 8 which recapped Seasons 1 and 2, and then the season 3 episode which took place around NYE 1923. That would have been the actual first episode that you saw. The recap episode, from the few bits I saw, included opinion from people behind the show and you would definitely have been able to tell the difference.
I love this show (obviously because I too started a thread on it a while back, but you can see how that panned out)
But I feel like it isn't quite a great show yet, it doesn't have that smash hit status that say, Game of Thrones had right out of the gate
And that's maybe because it's a really slow burn, or maybe there's something it needs to do or change to break through and really become a great show, but if that's the case I don't know what it would be

Like I said though, I love it
I think the problem is that every episode in this show feels like it's setting up some big thing. Then the big thing happens and another thing gets set up and so on and so on. It has a bit of weird rhythm to it that diffuses some of the punch of the OH FUCK moments.

There doesn't seem to be any overarching story or plot. Things just happen. Even though the dialogue is usually amazing, the writers don't seem to know what they're doing to engage the audience about what's going to happen or where the story is going.
You need something that is driving the narrative, or no matter how well acted or well written the individual scenes are, it's going to just feel really meandering.

Gyp continues to be great. Harrow becomes even more interesting. Doyle is funny.
this show continues to be fun even though half the characters don't really feel relevant to anything any more
it's about nucky and gyp now, with their associated characters, and then there's all of jimmy's gangster friends from last season plus his mom plus the agent guy with the enormous head
has there been any stated limit to the number of seasons? I'm hoping this won't fall into the sopranos trap

No limit so far.
Jimmy's Mom might be supporting Gyp as the season goes on. Nelson Van Alden seems to be headed towards becoming a buttonman for the Irish mob.
I just recently got introduced to this series and was wondering if anyone else was bothered by the last few eps in season 2, specifically
the death of the commodore as well as Jimmy. The first when felt so rushed I was actually pretty pissed off about it. In regards to Jimmy's death, I wasn't as surprised at the same time but now I am at a loss as to what's left for the story ?
In saying all that, I do love the series.

I also felt that way about the end of the season. The last 3 episodes just seemed so mashed together. I felt like the writers were just trying to tie as many loose ends as possible to change directions with Season 3.

This episode was all over the place, but there were a bunch of standout moments.
Rothstein and Nucky at each other's throats, Purnsley and Chalky watching a one man show, Gaston Means, Gillian writing a letter to James, and that fucking assassination scene.
This episode sets up some bad shit, but you could say that about any of the seasons. I really hope they deliver a satisfying arc this time.

But I love everything about the 1920s Prohibition era
I don't understand any thing you said here

Those last 5 minutes were so fucking good. I wish they could maintain the consistently.

Question about the last episode though.
