I wish they would just let you use the tower slot for any building. It's pointless, no one takes guard duty in it. Plus the zeds just climb the fence everywhere, and walk right into your safehouse.

Eh, I won't be playing for a while anyway... Simulation killed about 6 of my survivors including Maya (the Army girl, 3rd survivor). So I've lost interest, and Last of Us approaches....

Will come back to it later on, or definitely when it drops on PC. Dat fidelity (and basic-level mod support pretty please?), the texture work and optimization for this on 360 is atrocious to put it lightly, really really want this on PC. Increased zed density and everything I dare say. The optimization is so bad, I feel like someone stepped in at some point and told them to halt development and release, because they didn't think it would be such a hit.

I've been watching some Let's Plays of this in anticipation of the PC version, and the screen tearing is absolutely disgusting. I have no idea how people can play games like that. I'd throw up or get a headache or something.

No one's taking guard duty because of a bug and all those people were killed by the simulation because of a bug as well. Once the patch hits it should all be fixed.

Yea I know, but I'd rather start over when the patch hits... and by that time 360 will be moving over, and The Last of Us will be dominating my HDMI cable. Will be more than happy to hold out for PC release to be honest.

It's pretty bad, yeah. Overall the performance goes below 10 FPS, a lot. Texture pop in is really serious, the Level of Detail never syncs up and you always got blur on everything. They made this weird decision where some cars can drive like 250mph, forcing the game's engine to crap out trying to load everything in time (and it never quite does), surprisingly the game never runs out of memory and crashes.. Despite all that, this is literally everything I've wanted on a basic, fundamental level in a Zombie Survival game. All the basics, once and for all.

I felt like the zombie genre would eventually stay dead without ever having a true survival simulation. I guess we're just getting there now?

I think I will treat this playthrough as my crash-and-burn run. I know I will lose. I know I will restart when the patch hits.

Time to live, learn, and die.
Also, maybe I can get one or two of those insane achievements like the kill X number of hordes.

    Oh, man.

Maya just died, right after asking the Wilkersons about the robberies. Her car flipped due to janky physics, so she was running through the underbrush, avoiding hordes and looking for new wheels.

Feral that I didn't see or hear jumped on her from the bushes and literally ripped her in half before I could do anything.

That was rough. What bothered me about it most, though, was that, while running, Maya picked up Cardio 2. How do you get through Basic without at least Cardio 2? What kind of bullshit unit was she from, anyway?

I mean, chick was in Afghanistan, she should have the ability to run for a few seconds without getting winded.

Anyway, best part about that is that the rest of the survivors will think that the Wilkersons just straight up murdered her.

  • NosfNosf Registered User regular
I got sent to see the Wilkersons for something and pretty much the same; Virginia flipped her car and it blew up - so I had to run down to the road, get a card, come back and give some farmer a lift. I barely had any health, no ammo and a my wrench turned yellow. I made it though, was a great experience.

I'm going to wait till the patch lands and start over myself.

  • DracomicronDracomicron Registered User regular
Yeah, I don't know how rewarding it will be to play again before the patch. We'll see.

I lost somebody up there too. Random survivor, picking through the orchard next to an infested barn. Never saw the feral coming...

Pouring one out for you, Ondrej.

Also had my first experience with the wonky vehicle physics. Driving a modern pickup at top speed on the road to the first town, slammed head-on into a burned out wreck that popped in out of nowhere. Wasn't even at an angle or anything, hit it straight on. My truck went vertical, flew 20 feet straight up, flipped end-over-end and exploded.

I was expecting Michael Bay to jump out of the bushes and yell, "Awesome!"

First car I wrecked in this game was due to a mixtures of terrible framerate and pop-in. I was driving along, cut through a parking lot that looked completely clear and them BAM, a couple of cement parking blocks appear out of thin air half a second before I ran straight into them and flipped the car.

I've had a slew of issues with vehicles, but fortunately never lost anybody. On multiple occasions, vehicles have gotten stuck on top of things and prevented me from exiting the vehicle, so I had to quit out and reload. I've had three vehicles flip end-over-end and end up on the roof because of the front end hitting the ground at 15-20 degree angles while going off a bit of an incline. I've had at least two vehicles spontaneously explode from backing into things repeatedly (really? They never anticipated people would drive backwards AND forwards?); if you back into things, the vehicle indicates almost no damage whatsoever, so you can go from "banged-up bumper" to "fireball" with zero warning.

Though by far the most egregious physics bug was pulling over the top of a small rock at a middling speed and the truck I was in immediately getting flung fifty feet straight up with no rotation at all. Then the truck slammed back down on the rock, bounced again, flipped over mid-air, and exploded on impact with the ground, flinging me from the wreck with heavy damage.

Normally it would be funny stuff, but not in a game where one lone physics fuck-up is all it takes to cost me a high-level character.

Eh, it's the only viable way to clear out infested houses. I'd love to be able to clear out the herd inside with a gun and finish the rest off with a melee weapon, but I find the shooting controls to be absolute garbage for the most part. Can't wait for the PC version.

dream a little different, darling. alarm clock or other distraction tool used outside, every single zombie runs up to it, one firebomb takes them out. way faster than honking your horn and ramming them all over and over.

I too thought the shooting controls were absolute ass when I first started, but now I'm getting used to them maybe? Less twitch, more slow & steady tracking from headshot to headshot. Now I just pick off stragglers outside an infestation with silenced shots or suplexes, shout something derogatory about their mothers, and aim about head height on the front door. Bam, Bam, Bam. Only once that wave is all down do I set foot indoors for more skull cracking.

I use cars to clear infestations if I'm not really feeling it... like, especially if it takes 30 minutes realtime to track the thing down and all. Or I'm not using one of my top tier survivors.

I had to rush into the heart of an infestation last night when somehow one infestation spawned in the building I was driving up to so I could meet a survivor that was waiting for me to help him clear an infestation out in another building... was actually a rough fight since I had to take it as is with no advantages. :|

I managed to clear it without him dying, but jeez I soaked up a lot of damage in the process.

    Also, Sledgehammer.

I'm nor sure how permanent mines are, but those make clearing infestations a bit more interesting.

As long as you're not doing them with an NPC. Any mission that involves fighting zombies is basically "no explosives, no fire, no cars" because even driving near them is "Reckless driving - 8000 friendship points, bro."

(I don't know how I can complain about the game so much and still have it be so much fun (usually)).

    Also, Sledgehammer.

This should be one of the tips shown while the game is loading.

  • DivideByZeroDivideByZero Social Justice Blackguard Registered User regular
I have mixed feelings about Sledgehammers since the one time Super-Soldier Marcus put his lucky Axe away for fixin, he went out with a sledge and promptly got himself torn in half by a juggernaut.

First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKERS
  • BookerBooker Registered User regular
Is there any reason to use the sledgehammer over the root chopper? It weighs 3 times as much, which encumbers my characters faster when I loot houses. I started outfitting characters with escrima sticks for that very reason. I could cut the weight of their blunt weapon by half (or more) and not lose any effect.

  • Ninja Snarl PNinja Snarl P My helmet is my burden. Ninja Snarl: Gone, but not forgotten.Registered User regular
I have no idea if some weapons are stronger than others. I'm fairly sure that the main difference is just that some weapons are sturdier than others, so you can use them much longer without swapping out. If there's a damage difference between them, it seems completely overriden by character skills.

  • DracomicronDracomicron Registered User regular
I generally go by the items' influence prices in the inventory. More expensive = better weapon. May not track completely, but my knowledge of video games suggests that it is true.

Yeah, I just grab the items with the highest value and that have the highest durability stat. Doesn't seem to be much of a combat difference I've seen.

  • President RexPresident Rex Registered User regular
Yeah, the stat kind of makes it seem like "current item health" or something, but it seems to actually be "total durability". It'll also tell you at the bottom of the journal whether the weapon is blunt, edged or heavy (the 3 specialization classes). I do enjoy my axes and their ridiculously quick RB+Y finisher (instead of stuff like the baseball bat's wind-up).

The influence cost seems fairly accurate for melee weapons...not necessarily so for the firearms.

  • Ninja Snarl PNinja Snarl P My helmet is my burden. Ninja Snarl: Gone, but not forgotten.Registered User regular
Firearm cost is wildly out of proportion with how useful they actually are. Bolt-actions are effectively worthless, shotguns are suicide guns because of all the noise they make and the small magazines, and so that leaves suppressable semi-auto weapons (all full-auto weapons can be switched to semi-auto) as beating out everything else. Headshots are the only things worth using with anything but shotguns, so power doesn't even remotely matter compared to magazine size.

Basically, any large-magazine semi-auto gun is about as effective as any other; the fancy stuff doesn't really do anything for the higher costs involved.

Heheh, saw a flat, angled rock beside a fence while escorting someone back to base in my already smoking truck. Ed could have just driven around the fence, but the Dukes whispered words in his ear. Tempting words.

He flipped the truck, causing it to catch on fire and draw in a horde of zombies to the adjacent field with no cover. Ed is no longer allowed on escort duty.

I almost lost Sam and another survivor today while doing the "fix infestations escort run..."

Was driving full speed in a sedan or something and I nicked a curb and it throttled the car like 50 feet from the curb and ejected us into a horde.

They jumped on her so I firebombed them. She jumps up and we manage to finish them off and get to another Sedan. The car landed upright somehow, but was too damaged to risk using more.

I went through so many cars and all my instaspawn cars trekking around and back to the camp grounds to take out the two infestations that were keeping me stuck in danger.

Finally recovered the two missing people from this outbreak, and I think I really will wait until patch before continuing to play. IDK though... I think I'm at the last story mission, so I'm really just dicking around. There's going to be DLC or something for this, right?

I like all the Easter eggs and references in this game. My favorite so far is the Simon and Nick Landscaping. Is *anyone* buying a 360 just for this? I mean, I get your point and understand that it can be a tipping point for someone on the fence, but I doubt a pile of people have decided to pull the trigger on a Slim now because SoD came out. :-P

Anyway, I too am waiting for the PC version, so whether it's approvals or 3rd parties or exclusivity or because one of the higher ups is a dick, whatever, I just want to play this game.

I was at a friend's place and they were finishing up their session. While they were walking past some NPCs, one of the guys said "Everything's coming up Millhouse", at which point all three of us lost it. A single Simpson's quote alone pretty much sold me on this game, and reading through this thread has reinforced that.

Though it has also taught me that getting a patch or two in place isn't a bad idea.

And that despite what I might think, no, I cannot actually leap that gully in a vehicle. It seems that many have tried, and it always ends in tears.

I'm trying to stay away from too many spoilers, and I appreciate the effort you guys are taking to mark them accordingly.

On my playthrough, I had gone on a Fatty hunt mission with one of my favorite survivors. I brought along a mine with me, placed it in the driveway, got back in my Sheriff's car, and turned on the siren to lure him out into the mine. Turns out, I was mistaken, the waypoint I highlighted was merely a "Distraction" mission. "Okay", I said.. got out of the car and tried to pick it up.. couldn't figure out a way so I left.

    Completely forgot about that mine.

Later on, and I mean hours.. it could have even been the next day tbh, if I recall -- I received a mission at the *same* house. Apparently the mine was still there, because I drove straight into the driveway with a pickup truck to help a survivor and apparently vehicles trigger mines. It scared the SHIT out of me, it was so *loud*, literally flipped my car over and tossed my survivor out the driver's side door 20 feet into the bushes. The truck was completely destroyed. Somehow he survived with a tiny sliver of health, but damn I had a heart attack, couldn't believe what happened. I was personally in Iraq for 2 tours and experienced a few real IED's, to say I was 'startled' would be an understatement. (Not PTSD'd, but still lol)
