I ended up restarting yesterday. I lost Ed then Alan freaked out and shot the Pastor. I can't have that.
I was spending WAY too much time gathering resources (because that's what I do). I think I had something around 700 Influence by the time it all went down.

i think Alan always shoots the pastor
is this the pastor who has the zombie bite?
if I remember correctly depending on how quickly you get the doctor and how much medicine you can have him make a recovery
I have a lack of automatic weapons also, ammo. If I build an outpost in a building with ammunition crates, will I get ammo from it on a daily basis? I'm considering sacking my kitchen to get a munitions store. Most of my survivors are lvl5+ fighting, and I kind of want to start getting my Eagle Eye survivors some gun training. I don't have any decent non-handgun weapons though, apart from a single AK and an M1 Garand. I've raided every gun store, police station and red neck shack I can find.
I managed to get SweetFX working with the game. Doesn't do much, except you can change the colors to which actually makes a difference:
SweetFX is an injector for DirectX games. It's basically a small utility you download (for free), place into your game directory and edit the settings file to adjust the graphics to your liking. Now, most of the settings are weird to understand so instead of manually tuning things, just download the settings other people have tuned for you!
I use this settings file, but I disabled Film Grain. Here is a page where you can get SweetFX, plus it has some info for you.

Yup, I agree. But that should probably have been spoilered, man. :P
I think we need to specify whether or not we're playing Breakdown when we talk about difficulty. Because "only one" assault rifle sounds damn sweet to me.

I don't have the DLC yet, still enjoying the base game. I got the assault rifle (some variant of AK?) from a weird trio of women who radioed in to join. One of em is a computer geek, with an assault rifle and an Xbox T-shirt.
And then you have the loner jerks who don't get along with anyone. I swear, I have one dude in a cowboy hat that I've had to have 6 talks with. If he wasn't the only cook I'd have shot him by now.

In my game, the cook with the cowboy hat was called Cash Rassle. We kept him around because he was a good cook, AND had some construction skills.
When the situation came up for me I just switched over to a survivor I found who had the Psychopath trait. Got to off him without feeling bad that I made Marcus, Ed, or Maya do it.
Breakdown seems to follow the same difficulty curve as the story. It starts out tough and you get overwhelmed by the amount of quests. Then as you get further in the game, it seems to get a lot easier. I'm on Breakdown 2 right now, but since I have a base all set up nothing that difficult.
Any idea how the scoring works? When I left Breakdown 1 it showed a scorecard. Is that just showing my progress? Will I get points for that and what I do during Breakdown 2?
The leaderboards also seem to be a little messed up right now. I started a second profile just to die and look closer at the scorecard, but it set those stats as my high score, including total zombie kills. Aside from that I'm really enjoying it. I'm sure I'll hit the right difficulty where it feels tough the whole time.
Also, what are the losing conditions?
The only quest that counts for anything in Breakdown is "Get to the RV". Everything else is secondary. Losing conditions are not getting to the RV.
I meant what are the conditions that end the Breakdown DLC and give you a new score.
The first time I played, I ran into a special infected before I got more survivors. I got my ass kicked and died. The DLC ended, gave me a score.
Later, I wanted to see the score bonus for level 2 Breakdown, so I started a new profile and a new game. I sent the main character into a horde and died. This time it switched me to another character that was in the group (level 2 Breakdown starts you with 4 survivors). I sent that character in to die and this time the DLC ended and it gave me a score. I'm pretty sure I had 1 other character + Lily, so the losing condition must have been 0 Morale? This is what I wasn't sure on.
Side note: Don't make a second profile as I'm pretty sure it saved over my primary profile's save game.
To answer my own score question. You get points for:
rucksacks delivered
facilities built
missions completed
I'm not sure if they are all worth the same amount of points or what [edit: they are worth different amounts of points each]. It takes your total points and multiplies it by the Breakdown level you are playing on (at least it's 2x for level 2). Because I lost my save, I didn't get a chance to see if your score included all the previous levels of Breakdowns you have played. I did see a score after I left in the RV after level 1... I'm just not sure if it would add to my level 2 score at the end.
Edit: Started Breakdown level 3. First scouting I do in the middle of nowhere came up with 2 cars, 8 buildings, 7 freaks, 2 hordes, and regular zombies everywhere. This is going to get rough.
Nice, I just started level 3 last night. As in, got in the RV and drove to level 3, then went to bed.
I thought I heard somewhere that we would be able to adjust specific parts of the difficulty? Like, have no freaks and no cars but low stamina and durable regular zombies. Was that feature cut, or was I imagining it? One of the things I was most looking forward to was going as Romero-style as possible, with no freaks, and loads of slow, durable zombies.
Well, without freaks there'd be no reason to carry guns.
You are apparently much better than I am at this game. Even on Breakdown 2, there are just random small packs of zombies waiting for me at my truck when I'm done looting a house, or any little noise in the house brings like, 4 of them in a window. Guns are handy in those cases.
I usually melee freaks too, since I don't want to alert any of the surrounding zombies. Bloaters are the only ones I'll shoot. Normally I'll bait the juggernaut or feral with some of my followers, then take free swings at them while they are feasting.

Oh lord no, I'm still playing vanilla. I can't comment on Breakdown's increased difficulty. Have they changed how you can stagger enemies by just dividing your melee attacks between them? or insta-knockdown them by waiting behind a fence? (hitting them when they're climbing over knocks em to the floor). The car thing is a given though. Try to park in a place with covered line of sight (small allyway, back of buildings against walls). This tends to stop zombies following the car right to the spot you parked. Guns cause more problems than they solve...unless you absolutely have to pull one out because there are 10 zombies and you don't have allies (or a molotov).
I've played through twice, and both times Ed survived and Pastor Will died.
Ed
can die if you don't get the doctor in time (that is if you wait too long to do that mission), but the odds of this happening are very low (based on normal playtime/style)

That explains it.
Good point about parking the car in an alley. I usually prefer to have it in the open where I can make a run for it and have a clean getaway. I might have to rethink that though.
Alan and the Pastor:
That's pretty cool that he can take people with him. How would that happen though? If you get Alan killed first, maybe?
That SweetFX is really, really cool. Makes the game look fantastic!
Come over and install it for me.
Haha it's very, very simple. You just extract the zip into the game directory where the .exe resides. Update the configuration.txt file with what Lan posted up above and then BAM better shaders and such.
that SweetFX crashes my game on start-up every time.
it's a super simple installation process so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
At first I tried some 1.4 modded version of SweetFX, which crashed my game. I then switched to the newest version (SweetFX 1_5-23364-1-5-[Guru3D.com] is the filename) and that worked perfectly.
Full disclosure: I am running an Nvidia card, my Nvidia control panel is at default settings and my game settings are on Ultra.

Been playing some Breakdown. Only level one, while I try and get my survivors some better skills and weaponry.
Did have a death, though... poor Jesus Brown, the alcoholic taxidermist with a bum knee: he was trying to help another group of survivors defend their house, and I accidentally stumbled outside and promptly got pounced by a Feral. Even with near full health, it was enough to kill him.
Started playing Breakdown, and it's definitely harder than the original. Fewer loot in the houses, and more zombies. They seem to magically populate after you think the area is clear, and I've had a few instances where I didn't know how I was going to make it back. Thank god for distraction items and shrubbery.

So I remembered that this game was a thing. I booted up my Xbox and decided to start a new game. (Because I haven't played in months, and the idea of coming back to a starving, half dead crew didn't appeal to me.) So I get to the part where
Alan gets sick. I take him out to a farmhouse, whip out my glock and...
Click click click...
I had totally spaced out on ammo before I left. So I had to kill him with a machete. I felt bad, but then I didn't because I remembered what an asshole he was.
How do you drop kick on the steam version of this game? I didn't realize exactly how little this game does for new players. I read online that it's Shift + Space, but that doesn't work.

If you did what I did and just copied over the presets that were linked, I think those were for an older version that uses different settings. I reinstalled the current version of SweetFX then "simply" went through the default settings line by line, changing the ones that appeared in both to the suggested values in that preset.
Now it runs fine.
But, i'm kind of shit at seeing any graphical difference for settings in games so I can't notice any change. Maybe it's working, maybe not.

I'm not sure if they fixed it, but when I played on the xbox it mainly happened one way
if Alan ran away from home shortly after the "shopping for homes" mission. So if Alan ran away and isn't there to kill the Pastor, bam-o!
Also (re: infection)
if someone is in "critical" -going to die stage. I forget the exact terms, I think they are at the point of no return regardless. Before you sometimes got lucky and they would live but this was apparently not intended and they fixed it in subsequent patches. So best to have someone take them out somewhere discreet and shoot them- since most won't take kindly to "get the fuck out"- though I think if they distrust you they might go?
there was a bug where Lily's brother (I forget his name atm) could get infected (not recovering from his wounds) before the house hunting mission, and I remember just letting him stay because I needed to do that mission. But they fixed that.

Press scroll lock. It disables Sweetfx in-game. Press it again to enable. See if that highlights a difference.
