Is there any way to rotate the camera freely instead of in 90 degree chunks, or change the angle or anything? Why is the game 3d if I can't move the camera in 3d?
The demo was fun I guess. If this game is moddable I foresee wonderful things. Otherwise, I suspect I will stick to the original X-COM and Jagged Alliance if I want overworld with my tactics, and Frozen Synapse if I want the actual fights to be interesting. I don't like all the abstraction in the game; everything is percentage chances to hit, and if your roll a "hit" your bullets basically go through the wall and curve spacetime to hit. I had a lady behind a wall shoot through a window to her right to hit a Thin Man who was directly on the other side of the wall. She leaned out and fired through the window, so her bullets basically had to literally shoot backwards and sideways to hit the guy. Contrast that to something like the original X-COM, where your bullets hit what they hit and you dealt with it. Or how someone behind a corner can get shot because "corner" actually just means "cover." In (original) X-COM, if I'm behind a corner, I'm safe until they shoot through the corner. In this game, a telling someone to stand at a corner actually means telling them to lean all the way out of the corner whenever an alien shoots at them. Because to do otherwise would be unchivalrous.
But, if this game can be modded like Civ 4 could be modded, I'm more sanguine about its prospects. As it stands I don't think I'll preorder - $50 is a lot of money for a game that is a step backwards in a lot of ways from the original.
Also, looking at the base layout, each individual room totally seems like you could have a fight in it. Just saying.
Hah. Lost no one on the open demo mission. My sniper got wounded from a floater who flew up over a trailer even though three other guys were overwatch firing at it. Of the last two aliens, one got a shotgun to the face through a window and another got a grenade thrown at the otherwise of a wall it was behind.
Psh. Through a window.
The last thinman of the mission, I did something awesome but stupid. I had the one with the shotgun dash up to it, using the run and gun ability, and shoot it point blank in the back.
Yes, she got poisoned, but I'm guessing she thought it was WORTH IT.
I killed one thin man when one of my guys flanked him and got vision, and then my sniper fired from the crater outside through the open door and into the back of the warehouse where the thin man was. Nailed that motherfucker.
Aaand I broke the demo. Tried to get through the first part too fast and after I move the guy to the bus stop with the blood it just sits there and nothing happens.
Everything was percentages in the original too, its just the shots kept going after they missed until they hit -something-.
Um, yes, and those two are completely different things. Having a % chance for the projectile to go in the right direction when it leaves the weapon is 100% different than having a % chance to hit no matter what. If I had a 100% accurate gun in X-COM I still couldn't shoot a person on the other side of a wall as me or behind a corner unless I took out the wall or the corner. In this new game, magic reality-bending forces take over and guide my shot to the target somehow. I don't like that. It feels silly and it looks silly. It's not awful or obviously worse or anything, but it's a completely different kind of game and I much prefer the simulation style of X-COM or Jagged Alliance or the fine detail oriented style of Frozen Synapse to the abstracted board game dice roll non-reality of the new X-COM.
Demo just BSODs my computer every time I try to start it. Says something about secondary processor failing to get a prompt or something like that.
Apparantly not the only person having problem.
Now I'm really worried that it won't work for me at launch.

The abstracted gunfire being in the demo really worries me. That is kind of game-ruining. a defining feature of the genre is having shots function as physical entities. being able to shoot through walls and buildings in utterly silly ways eliminates a lot of the gameplay and the atmosphere.

Is there any way to skip the tutorial portion and jump straight to the second mission? I want to try the china fight but don't want to go through the basic tutorial mission again.
Has anyone noticed the interesting Thin Men who after dieing, drop their gun, Remain standing with poison gas leaking out of their brains?
Yeah I've never seen this in other builds, it looks like there is a bug where people stay standing after they are killed. (Both X-Com dudes and the aliens)

Is that available anywhere or did I miss it entirely?
I'm still in love with the original X-COM UFO defense demo. Might be some kind of weird Stockholm syndrome.
I did that the second playthrough - so satisfying.

It says "Subscription failed" when I try to download it
Yeah, that worked
Restart Steam.
It has an ant-farm thing between missions but its scripted to just take you between, like, three rooms. You can't explore it.

hahah who cares

Heh, I wonder if this demo will get "Updated" or "Patched".
I mean let alone the technical issues, all the movies, ALL OF THEM, are in the folder. I slightly spoiled myself just glancing at the folder contents.
That and it would save on lots of HD space/bandwidth for us/steam.
But most importantly...
.\steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown-Demo\XComGame\Config\DefaultNameList There's no gender distinction for last names, but it looks like we can seed our own names. I'll fill it with Space Mutiny and see if it works.
