i have been promised review code (360) in two days or so
It is taking a lot of effort to type this under the inebriating effect of fermented... stuff. I hope you all appreciate this fruitless bounty from the gods.
I'm liking the new mission types - the time factor of the bomb disposal really adds tension. Harder difficulties must be brutal, given the tougher anemones and needing to be more careful.

I watched those German LP videos.
They are the perfect example of why I don't have a single gaming friend from my own country.
This is literally every single German gamer I have ever played with/met.
Horrible.
Utterly, utterly horrible.

Enemies. Tougher enemies.
Anemones, of course, will be featured in the TFTD sequel.

I used to be in a Battlefield 2 clan with a guy from Hamburg and he was the living embodiment of ruthless German efficiency. It was frightening. I imagined that he lived in a brushed steel house wearing grey suits and polished black shoes. Driving the humvee he would obey the fucking road markings on Karkand.
He seemed like the kind of guy who would measure his dick in centimeters, and to three decimal places.
Here's a question I haven't seen answered, though maybe I just didn't look hard enough.
Is there friendly fire? I would assume there would have to be; either hitting a friendly by mistake or by being mind controlled into shooting your own team.
I just haven't seen it mentioned or seen it in effect in a game.

Looks like we're 1/4 of the way to the bonus copy of Civ 5.
Honestly, perk 1 and 2 were the ones I really cared about, but given that I don't actually own 5 yet (I have a box copy of 4, and if I'm honest, the original is where my heart still lies), but an extra game on top of X-Com isn't a bad little bonus.

Watching that bomb defusal was cool, I didn't watch the german LPs because it sounds frustrating, but that was a good video. No spoilers either, just gameplay.
It just made me think of friendly fire, during that game a heavy shot his lmg right over the head of a panicking teammate. He killed the sectoid, and missed the teammate. The entire time I was expecting a human death... guess he got lucky. This time.

It's not XCOM if you're not being shot in the back by your own guys.
I know right? It was just something I thought about after watching the latest video. I saw the heavy gun guy shoot a sectoid over top another friendly.
Just got enough money in the old Steam Wallet to take care of XCOM. Preordering now. Supposing we hit the Civ V threshold, how does gifting work? I already have Civ, but I've never received a gift on Steam before.

Steam has a drop-down with your giftables. You pick what you want to gift, and you can send it to a Steam Friend or an email address. Confirm, and you're done.
I can't decide whether to rename the soldiers, or just assign them custom nicknames and keep their actual names untouched. Trying to decide which one will promote a better emotional connection with my meatshields.
I think the problem is, as soon as I see a name I'm going to form an emotional attachment.
Which is why I want the names parsed from a text document instead of having to be changed later.
Cause when Jim Smith walks into the XCOM HQ, even if I want to rename him to My Friend's Name, he's always going to be Jim Smith in the back of my mind.

John Smith? Pfft. It's Omega One through whatever until they make squaddie.

I'm going with the latter. Otherwise it'll just remind me that the soldiers are just bits of code that I named after people who I wish were dead*.
Oh my. If the way soldiers are generated is at all editable, I am sooo making a facebook web app that simply generates that file created by your friends list.
First black guy that I recruit is going to be named Barack Obama and motherfucker he's making it to the end.
But what nationality will you make him? [/obvious joke]
I generally just use whatever names are assigned, but I could see myself altering those in my first playthrough. Just to make it extra traumatizing when they have to be put down for the sake of the team/mission.

I never do the family/famous character thing, takes me right out of the game.
Haha yeah that's something I tend to do as well - I usually rename the first handful of guys after my friends then no more; you know thy are all going to die... You just hope one pulls through. Usually that is me... The rest become my bullet shields at some point.
Last TFTD game I played it me and two others. I was essentially injured for months on end and my remaining friends somehow kept surviving - they were incompetent fighters scared of their own shadow but were nevertheless insanely lucky... Kind of like real life...

It was my only concern.

Team Scooby Gang for general missions
Team Big Dead Heroes for Chryssalids
...and so on.
That way you could simply input all your friends, family etc and they would show up automatically, rather than having to name them.
Why have to type 'em all out? Could be one of the first integrations with Facebook I could get behind.
My ex-girlfriend has volunteered herself to be first out of the skyranger.
Sorry Tara, I had a huge crush on you in High School that you never reciprocated. Here's your personal armor. Good luck.
I'd probably just populate it with MST3K jokes, ponies, and forumers.
