I'm unclear as to how much flexibility we have in base placement. The one video I've seen that deals with the subject seemed to suggest that you just choose your starting continent and then the game slaps down your base. In that particular case, right in the middle of the continental US. It's possible I missed a quick keystroke, though. I want control!
Pretty sure it just gets put in a specific spot on the continent, seeing how your radar doesn't have "range" around the base, but instead it's all satellite based, with each satellite over a country increasing your coverage.
Are all countries represented in the game as possible soldier nationalities? I mean, I think we've only seen stuff like the US, UK, Russia, China etc.
I mean, seriously, am I going to have a sniper from the Vatican? Or a heavy from, I dunno, Fiji or something?

So here is an elusive question: If you cover a continent with sats (all countries), do you get the continental bonus? For example, I start in North America (Air and Space ? YES SIR) then cover the two countries in South America (Monroe Doctrine in effect). Do I get the We Have Ways bonus? Otherwise, after securing North America, I'm heading over to Russia (for that sweet, sweet 150 buckazoids).
With regards to soldiers? I name them after GI Joe characters. Males, females, nicknames. All taken care of. Roadblock the heavy? Low Light the sniper? You betcha.
I agree with you Scarab, only the base should OBVIOUSLY be in Germany.
I saw this Finnish documentary about how a bunch of your people left for the moon in the mid 1940's.
I have the feeling that when they return from there they want Berlin back quickly, this is supported by the tutorial mission.
I'd imagine there would be texturing issues with non-standard flag designs. Like Nepal.
Also, I wonder how up to date it is. South Sudan? New Libya?
I'm not being flippant. These are serious questions. I really want a sense of a global unity with the XCOM force, I don't want it to just be essentially another arm of the UN Security Council.

The same thing happened in that goofy German LP - they chose Europe and the base defaulted to a specific location.
That's not exactly thrilling, but I'm happy enough about the continental bonuses that I'm not prepared to let it bug me.

Re: flags. I've certainly seen a Canadian flag, but nothing from Andorra or equivalent. Probably flags from member nations only. That is a guess, though.

That's the one! Them basterds ain't taking my hometown, no way no how.
Considering that Jake Solomon said he spend a lot of time researching names of people from certain places, I don't think the roster of countries will get too diverse, as much as I want a soldier from BIOT or Vanuatu, I don't think they'll be included
Isn't it a fairly short list of major countries forming the X-COM donor list? I remember seeing somewhere there were only seven or eight countries that you got funding from.
Well it's certainly more than the member states of each continental bloc.
I saw a Portuguese flag for sure in a video and the European states for the satellite coverage are UK, Germany, France and Spain. I think. Maybe not Spain. Maybe Italy. Who cares. It's Spain and Italy. Might as well be Greece and some other poor country.

You're going to run out of names.
It'll be "gameover, you lose Jefe" before I get through this list:

Somewhere in the PAX footage I believe, it was asked if you could change a soldier's nation of origin, and JSGA said that was the one thing you couldn't change, so someone asked if their country was represented, and JSGA said there were 40+ countries soldiers could come from.
So here is an elusive question: If you cover a continent with sats (all countries), do you get the continental bonus? For example, I start in North America (Air and Space ? From evidence borne out of discussions in the main forums, that does appear to be the case: You get the continent bonus for the continent that isn't your base once you have total satellite coverage over it. So if you have a base in North America, then have total sat coverage of South America, you not only get "Air & Space" form your base, you also get "We Have Ways" from South America.
This makes satellite placement even more agonizing. Do you place your satellites on countries that have the most panic to ease them, or do you place them methodically on countries to complete that continental bonuses, even if those countries aren't in any danger yet?

The Council of Nations has 16 countries. Lose 8 of them, and you lose the game.
Also, have a multiplayer match.

I mean, I made it to about the half hour mark before I simply had to turn it off because the guy still didn't understand you can't move and shoot with a sniper. It literally says it on screen in the tooltip and he did it five fucking times. Why did the other dude spend so many points on sectoid psychic powers and then never use any of them? Why did that guy never use overwatch? Why are they recording this if they're so bad?
Whenever you have to preface a recording with something along the lines of 'hey by the way we don't know what we're doing so bear with us' you know what you do? Fucking delete the recording and do it again after spending ten minutes reading the goddamn fucking game manual.

I seem to recall Jake saying in the live stream that there were "over 20" nationalities in the game. Assuming he wasn't delirious with fatigue, maybe there are a few countries contributing soldiers, but not money? I'm pretty sure I've seen a Scottish flag on a squaddie's back at some point.

From the official forums, a thread was made solely to figure out what countries were in based on preview videos. This was the result so far:
Argentina
Australia
Belgium
Brazil
Canada
China
Egypt
France
Germany
Greece
India
Ireland
Israel
Italy
Japan
Mexico
Netherlands
Nigeria
Norway
Russia
Saudi Arabia
Scotland
South Africa
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
UK
Ukraine
USA
Scotland is a part of the UK. They can't be separate nations you twerps.
I know there's a Scottish flag. Some SC2 player joined a team and asked that it be used for his display info. Some people thought it was nice, some thought it was dumb, others trolled.
I guess in this alternate reality, Scottland is its own nation.
We're going to be fighting horrors from outer space with advanced power armour and particle weapons.
If Scottland being a nation is the most suspension of disbelief breaking thing I encounter during these struggles, I think I'll make it through just fine. :P
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
Do they have to spend 90% of the game begging the rest of Europe for funding?
Well that's only the lategame. They spend most of the tutorial and first two acts forging human civilization and giving the world rational, scientific theory. Then there's a bit of empire building, a bit of humus and weird dancing, then for the last two seconds of the entire eighty hour game experience they end up losing an amount of money that is roughly equivalent to 5% of the US national debt, which is then paid off by Germany and the rest of Europe for no penalties.
i have been promised review code (360) in two days or so
It is taking a lot of effort to type this under the inebriating effect of fermented... stuff. I hope you all appreciate this fruitless bounty from the gods.
Preempting, but if and when you do get the demo, I want to ask this question now: How large is the demo in terms of filesize?
Also, lucky you.

But seriously. The UK includes Scotland. You can't just have that as a separate nationality. You wouldn't have soldiers with a Gaza flag now would you? That would be a major oversight and cause a huge political shitstorm. I demand that bwahaha who am i kidding nobody cares about scotland fuck it
Anytime a soldier with the Guile flattop is onscreen, the McCann soundtrack fades away and is replaced by an endless loop of this, the most 80s thing ever.
