Elite Beat Agents

For those who do not know or remember, Elite Beat Agents is the recently released musical rhythm game released for the DS just a few months ago. It can be considered a sequel to Ouendan, as well as an english counter-part. The game has not sold very well, with around under 350k units sold, it's still a great game.

If you played Ouendan, you know what to expect: Lots of fun, albeit frustrating, full of upbeat and sometimes (you're my inspiraatiooon) songs. The goal of the game is to hit marks with numbers such as 1, 2, 3, 4 and then hit them in order when the outer ring around them is closed in around the mark. There are other marks such as phase markers where you have to hold your stylus on the screen and move a ball across a certain path, sometimes repeating the course several times in one phase. The most, I guess frustrating is the spinning wheel that pops in at certain times in which you must run the stylus in a complete circle on the screen at a quick pace to get the side bars to the top. Completing this will be treated as hitting just a right beat, but repeating can help you earn many bonus points.

So here, we will discuss EBA. Now, i'm going to start by saying that hard mode is fucking bullshit. Canned heat has the most fucked up beats ever, because mainly towards the starting they do not match with the song. Though that does not at ALL compare to You're the inspiration on Sweatin'. The game seems to be confused between voices and small piano synth sounds in the background, so the beats are extremely akward and you can't really count on your ears to guide you on the beats.

I recently beat the cruisin' level of difficulty. I have an S-rank for every song except
the second part of the final song.

I was trying to wrap that up tonight, but found it difficult to even make it through the song! Last time, a few days ago, getting an A was laughably easy, but I didn't have time then to refine to an S. The mistakes tonight were stupid, too: just tapping outside the beats, or forgetting to lift the stylus for the next beat.

EBA: an excellent gauge of how tired you are. I can't play this game for shit without a full night's sleep.

EBA is probably my favourite DS game, I love it so much.

That said, I also fucking hate it. I'm stuck on JJF on Sweatin' and I just can't do it. But then I've only been able to get through Without a Fight once, so usually I can't even get to JJF.

I was stuck on Let's Dance forever, that song is such a bitch.

This game has put scratch marks on my DS' screen. It wasn't Trauma Center, no it was Elite Beat Agents. Those damn spinners...you can trace the circular motions etched into my screen if you hold the system towards the light.

It was a funny game but it's waaay too easy to get overexcited when you're tapping for your life during Jumpin' Jack Flash.

I'm certain you can directly play JJF without playing through Without a Fight once you beat WaF.

I love this game, and I am glad I have Hori filters on my screens.

You're paying too much attention to the words. The beats in You're the Inspiration are very natural and intuitive once you learn to focus on more than one part of the music. Same goes for Canned Heat. The problem, however, is that some songs change what beat they are following very rapidly. For these you just have to buck up and practice.
Well I'm glad you figured it out and good luck beating it. It only gets harder.

That's true. The last 20 seconds or so of the song are ridiculously intense.

Actually, I still don't understand how the points system works. I can get a B rating on some songs but I noticed my point totals don't increase. Apparently you can play for hours getting C and B ratings and never increase your total score.

Combos are what gets you points.

What upsets me is when I get a better rank in a song, but a lower score. Then the rank is not saved. :(

Edit- Your rank is determined by how many 300s and Elite Beats you get, and how few 50's you get. It's based on percentages.

your rank is determined by how many 300's you get.
your score depends primarly on your combo.

if you miss a dot in a slider, the game doesnt count it as a miss, but it destroys your combo.
At least thats what i understand.

    Wikipedia wrote:
High scores are acquired by achieving combos, or stringing together a series of successful actions. The longer the player is able to maintain a combo, the greater the multiplier applied to each successful action. Should the player miss a marker completely, the multiplier will stop and the player must start a new one. The game keeps track of individual stage high scores for all difficulty levels, as well as a cumulative high score that affects the player's "Agent Rank." The Agent Rank is a special title such as "Soldier of Song" or "God of Groove" that will change as the player's cumulative high score reaches specific milestones. Elite Beat Agents features three bonus stages that are unlocked when three such ranks are achieved.

The player's performance in each stage is rated on a letter-grade scale, with "D" being the lowest possible rank and S being the best. To achieve an S-rank in a level, at least 90% of all beats must be 300, another 9% must be at least 100, and no more than 1% may be 50. The player must end with a "Perfect", obtained by missing no beats throughout the entire song. However, it is possible to break a combo by missing a dot on a Phrase Marker track and still get an S-rank. Due to the nature of the game's scoring mechanic, it is possible to achieve a new high score in a stage while simultaneously earning a lower grade than the previous high score performance, although this is somewhat rare.

350k? That sounds like decent sales considering the low development cost of a DS game. I'm not sure how much money it cost to license the songs, though.

Also, I can beat any song in the game on Sweatin', easily, except Jumpin Jack Flash.

even Without a Fight is easy. I just cannot see the numbers in the later parts of JJF in order to hit them. I might have to 'review' the song every time I lose so I can memorize the really tough patterns.

God, I'm still depressed from purposely failing the 3rd checkpoint in that song. Just.... god. I did it so long ago but I will never forget it. Anyway, the only song I did good on was Without a Fight on whatever the hardest difficulty was. I was like 3,000 away from beating 645 when I entered my score. Knowing him though, he probably got all 300's on it since then just to make it so that only the gods of spinners could ever have a chance of beating him.

One thing about the game that I admire is that it can take the a couple of the crappiest, stupidest songs in American pop culture and make me bob my head as I'm playing.

"Survivor" is a dumb song. But when combined with a hilariously ridiculous spoof of House of the Dead zombie apocalypse (complete with ammo counter, RELOAD warning, and ridiculous "boss"), it becomes the greatest level in all of mankind. Well, not really. But you get my point.

I cannot play "You're the Inspiration" anymore, though. That shit is just too sad.

Your overall "Agent Rank" in the game is determined by the sum of your high-scores.

So, unless you are improving (or playing new songs), it won't increase.

The one thing i don't like about this game is how your meter will still go down if you are hitting all the notes, or sliders, but your combo isn't big enough to overcome meter's decreasing. I know its to make it harder, but it just seems kinda dumb that its THAT unforgiving. (This is on Agent Chieftain's difficulty.) I do love this game and Ouendan, can't wait for the sequels

In all seriuosness, once i get the last 20 seconds, I'm in the fucking zone and cant lose.

My favorite song, because the beats match perfectly, is ABC. Second would have to be Makes No Difference because of the agents dancing.

Hell yes. I prefer Ouendan because of the music and scenarios, but EBA is still a great game because the gameplay is the same (even improved in a couple minor ways) and it still has that awesome funny vibe.

Also, Canned Heat is so the best EBA song.

I pay $60 for 360 games, I'd definitely have payed $60 for EBA if that's what it cost. I don't think it's "better in every way" than Ouendan though.

Tip for those who undergo Elite Meter Troubles: If you 300 a complete set of beats (all the same color), you get an Elite Beat, which brings a hefty bonus of health to your score. A mix of 300s and 100s give you a beat, with a smaller health bonus. A Miss or 50 in a set gives no bonus at all.

I still play occasionally. I still need to Full combo Survivor Divas.

I just picked up EBA a week ago after wanting it for quite a long time but never having the chance to grab it.

I think it's the most fun I've had on the DS, and is exactly the kind of game I needed on the DS.

I expected the game to be fun, but I didn't expect it to be this fun. I played for so long the first two days I got it that both my arm and my wrist hurt for three days afterward. I also get headaches if I play for too long (probably something to do with staring at a small screen).

It's so satisfying to get good at a song and memorize where everything is... I think my favorite song is Jumpin Jack Flash, simply because it's so satisfying to be able to easily do it after practicing for so long.
