Yeah, bootstrap is my starting point of choice these days, too. If I'm going the UI completely myself I dig around online for a nice template. bootswatch.com has several that are nice and I'm sure there are a ton of others.
One of these days I'll learn about colors and stuff so that I can just pick out nice ones myself.

Cool, I know my boss loves the idea of using F/OSS.

This was my student webpage forever, but I don't really mess with it much these days, I just use it to host images for the most part now. The plan is eventually have a CV type things on ShawnSmithDev.com because the URL is a lot more professional sounding, but I probably won't bother until I feel like looking for a new job. They're both basically the same CSS with different colors/backgrounds, though.
That's literally the best I can do. I'm not a web designer and I have no intention of becoming one.

<b> and <i> tags everywhere, tables and frames for everything, CSS nowhere
<b> and <i> are perfectly alright to use for pure presentational value when the semantics of strong or emphasized text are not required.
The difference is that screen readers put emphasis on <em> and <strong> due to the semantic value, while <b>/<i> is treated as purely presentational.
edit: or to quote the HTML5 spec:
The b element represents a span of text to which attention is being drawn for utilitarian purposes without conveying any extra importance and with no implication of an alternate voice or mood, such as key words in a document abstract, product names in a review, actionable words in interactive text-driven software, or an article lede.
I had an old website I was maintaining (which has since been nuked from orbit, thank god) that was designed entirely through the Dreamweaver gui, with all text elements edited in Word then pasted in
I have seen hell, and it consists mostly of millions of redundantly opened and seldom closed inline font styling tags
I don't normally have to mess HTML and CSS, but when I do I start with Bootstrap and customize it.
This. Bootstrap all goddamned day long. I fucking hate front-end web-design and this is the best thing I have come across so far. It pretty damn easy to use, and (IMO) it looks friggin' great.

Can't be worse than a word file saved as a webpage
Oh gods at work here when I was on 3rd shift Ops we absorbed the IT department of the clinics we bought. They have an AS400 and IDX system that we had to run all these nightly queries and maintenance jobs on. The procedures for it were webpages made in Word. On one of them, somehow when they were changing a hyperlink it screwed up the tags in the table so that every bit of of text from about halfway down the page on was a link to the old document. Except for the links, where part of it was a link to the old document, and some part somewhere off to the side was the actual link you were looking for.
I went in to the source to see if I could straighten it out, and somehow every single cell in the table had gotten an <a href> in it. Thankfully google found me the keystroke to strip links out of a highlighted portion of text.
So... if a guy were thinking of maybe learning how to make iOS apps. What's the best route to go about that? I almost grabbed the Oreilly book on it the other day, but figured you guys might know a cheaper starting point at least.
Hey, let's play a game. It's called "Who is being dumb? PHP or me?" I'm getting a missing parameters error, but it doesn't make any goddamn sense.
Warning: Missing argument 1 for Task::__construct() in task.php on line 64
Warning: Missing argument 2 for Task::__construct() in task.php on line 64
class Task
{
public function __construct($pdo, $inID) //line 64
require_once(ConfigPaths::$fileRoot . 'task.php');
$task = new Task(GetDB(), $_GET['taskid']);
Given that the function signature has two parameters, and I'm passing in two parameters, I have no idea what the fuck it wants. Am I misusing the new styled constructor somehow?
It's possible that PHP doesn't like taking the function (really, the function's result) as a parameter.
Try:
$pdoDb = GetDB();
$tas = new Task($pdoDb, $_GET['taskid']);
I appreciate the effort, but PHP isn't budging even with this.
FAKE EDIT:
FFFFFFFFFFFFFF, the answer is me, I am the one being dumb.
Turns out I wasn't passing the correct arguments through PDO::fetchAll, which was making some calls on the same page. I'm just going to blame this on PHP's output not telling me where the call came from.
Isn't that always the way? I think on something over a whole weekend and only figure it out 5 minutes after opening my big mouth.

I'm pretty sure half the questions I've asked here have been followed 15 minutes later by "Nevermind, turns out I'm and idiot."
I know, scripting language, blahblah, but I really hate how languages like PHP return whatever the fuck they want.
"Call this method to create a new instance of this thing! If everything goes OK, I'll return a handle to the instance you wanted! How awesome is that?! <smug smile> Wh... what's that? What if I fail? Ummm... how about I return a boolean value? That's a good idea, right? Either I return a valid handle or a bool that will always be false, perfect. Why bother with a boolean value? Why not just return a null handle? Well, what the fuck am I? A robust web-framework, free of bloat that makes any sense whatsoever? I think not, Mister Man." :rotate:
PHP makes about as much sense as Java half the time... possibly less sense. I wish I could use python in place of PHP.
It's really a problem with weakly typed variables in general. Had PHP used strong typing, and was going to throw an debug error going "hey dumby, this type had an issue because I threw null and it turned to 0 because PHP MAGIC MOTHERFUCKER" then it would probably be a bit better.
not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me
Yeah. It's why it was such a massive breath of relief when I started messing with Ruby. Holy crap, it doesn't return bullshit for "empty" variables so I have to wrap them in more bullshit to deal with the first bullshit!
So I had a 2nd phone interview Wed afternoon. I haven't heard anything back yet, when is it "acceptable" to ping them? I don't need this job, I'm happy-ish where I am. However, this COULD be awesome. So I'm pretty lax about it, but I don't want to seem disinterested either.
Ugh. php and choadigniter. Quit reminding me how super extra bad it is. I'm really likely to be taking a job where I'll be dealing with it consistently for awhile and possibly forever.
And my coffee this morning sucks. We've got keurig machines here and I grabbed the last k-cup out of some normal coffee without looking at it. What I seem to have is some sort of flavored vanilla bullshit that makes my cup smell funny and doesn't taste like coffee at all.

and business cards
I really would like a logo, how much does branding logos usually cost from a graphics designer perspective?
bowen, you have a bunch of ready made logos already, what are you thinking.....
Joe's Stream.
Yeah something a bit more professional though!
"KNIFEYSTABS" doesn't really scream "hey we should use this for software!"
I'm kind of a fan of this logo "design firm" (well okay it is a guy who will draw you a logo for $5 so he can buy a beer)

Yep, it was exactly like that. Except all those </ul> elements weren't split out onto different line/indents.
Do you have a valid passport?

God I love tracing errors in PHP.

PHP: cargo cult language.
So I'll use C++. Haters gonna hate.
Give them a buzz Thursday and check on the status.
