I really enjoy greatsword rangering. I really need to find a better greatsword now. Last time I used mine was about 40 levels ago, which I assume is a tad past its prime.

Queues to WvW are in general really short at the moment, as everyone is getting annoyed by the invisible enemy culling bug.

...and of course, as always, Kill Hitler.

since hitting 80 I haven't Not finished a dungeon. I know there's some paths that are known to be very hard but it's one of those things you know going in. I don't think people who run dungeons, only run parts of dungeons.

A chance at tokens would be ok, but going back to actually getting tokens just leads to boss grinding again. maybe give them more interesting drops. like a guaranteed core/chance at lodestone or like a 10-20% chance for rare.

Wanted to toss my ranger thoughts into the ring as well. With 30 in beastmastery and 20 in skirmishing, taking all the talents that boost pet damage eagles/hawks can put out some serious hurt. Add rampage as one and sic' em into the mix and mans/mobs drop FAST. Not many people target the birds so you can get wonderful strings of kills in wuvwuv hanging back and snacking while your pet murders away.

For Ranger, Axe/Torch is the shit.

Torch is the most amazing off-hand with tons of burning damage and Axe gives you projectile finishers on that fire field.

No, you can actually get eagle/hawk pets. They're small, and easy to miss in the hubbub.

I'm running shortbow/axe+horn on my ranger. The torch is probably better for condition damage, but I love the "summon birds to peck out your enemies eyes skill" and the buff at nr5 is great and groups and wonderful for getting around a map with it's speed buff.
I played around with the greatsword, and while I loved the look of the skills I didn't find it as survivable.

I use my shortbow when soloing and flank the enemy for the bleeds while my pet tanks. The axe is great against groups, in tight areas like caves and is great for group events to since you can tag so many mobs at once with it.

In my utility slots I have Signet of stone and Signet of the Wild, both to help me and my pet survive better, and Flame trap for close up AoE and as a combo field. My Elite is Entangle, my heal is Healing Spring.

What I like the most about this build is that it works well for solo and group events, I have plenty of AoE/multiple target skills and buffs to do damage to groups of enemies and support groups of allies.
The mid-level zones seem pretty quiet at the moment, so the extra survivability from the signet helps when I'm playing alone or at odd times.
So far the ranger is my favorite of the classes I've tried for longer then 5 levels (my others being Guardian, Mesmer and Warrior). But I've always been partial to ranged pet classes anyway ;)

I think Mesmer is going to be my new main alt (though I do have one of everything at this point). That class is so stupidly hilarious to play as but it definitely looks like it won't truly hit it's stride until you hit the mid-levels. Thankfully staff is so god damn hilarious that I won't be losing interest any time soon.

Unsurprisingly, a Mesmer was my main GW1 alt. welp.jpg

something that may be worthwhile to check out when you get higher level is dropping signet of stone. It's pretty good at lower levels, but it doesn't scale very well and at lvl 80 it's only a drop in the bucket as to what you're going to have from your gear. Entangle is awesome. Great for trapping large groups so you can destroy them at your leisure. :)

EDIT: And let me put it this way. If you enjoy jumping into a big group of enemies, doing a fuckload of damage and not dying, go warrior. If you're looking for a class that has much greater potential for support and teamplay, go guardian. Of course, there's a lot to be said for having a team plyer who can jump into a big group of enemies and do a fuckload of damage.

Personally I think its a toss up there. I have a 80 warrior and 80 guardian, both can bring just as much team support as the other. Hammer warrior with sword/shield swap is an amazing support profession. I push the line forward all the time, something I cannot do as effectively with my guardian. However my guardian helps other push the line in a big fight, so like I said its a toss up. I just feel that with my warrior I can single handedly disturb the front line of enemies by soaking damage, CCing, fearing, and just being a generally hard to kill distraction. Now if its a 100b warrior, then ya their support is terrible.

This is a big factor. But I will say that last night was much better on the amounts of invisible shit. It still happened, but If I was near a group of enemies for a few seconds they would reliably load in. Before, you could fight for many minutes just AOEing the area you think they are and never have them load period. So its possible they tweaked some server setting on their end, since I don't recall any patch since the one that broke it.

WvW was all around fantastic yesterday evening. Maguuma seemed to have grown a pair and had groups all over our borderland taking various things. Both our potential points stayed around 300 for primetime. If they had performed like they did last night, but all week I think they could be very close to us in score.

Entangle is probably one of the more elite elite skills. There aren't many skills that can even compare to how good it is. 20 seconds of immobilization + bleeding on every target within range (I don't know if it has a limit on targets, I've done 8 or 9 before) is stupidly powerful.

    Mystic Forge observations:

I bought about 10g worth of greatswords (picked because this precursor is worth the most money so it makes sense to shoot for this regardless of what you want). I was sitting on a little over 100 extra magic find. This was about 12 combines worth plus twelve combines makes 12 swords which makes another 3 combines. I threw some random bits together to make the final combine.

First thing I noted was that the forge is totally not completely random. I was using a select couple greatswords due to their lower price. I was combining 4 different swords everytime. I every yellow greatsword that popped out was a Norn Greatsword of air or some type of Krait Greatsword. Every one. I got 1 exo from this. Dhumaal or something to that nature. I then sold that for the measly 1g25s is was worth and bought a few more greatswords. Findings here were the same as before and I got one more exo from this batch... another Dhumaal.

Glean what you will from this.

Couldn't you also turn off auto-attack if you want to use the jump back but not the jump in?

Because I don't want to repeatedly press 1 when I'm much more concerned with moving around?

edit- that said, I may turn it off sometimes on my shortbow. Have any other thieves had a problem where stealing with the shortbow equipped will trigger the auto-attack? It's annoying as all hell when I'm just trying to run thru the zone and now I've shot someone I had no need to shoot.

Maybe's it's just a matter of bindings but I find that the auto-attack gets in the way enough that I don't like it. I have it set on my mouse so it's not annoying and I guess I just enjoy pressing the button all the time. Makes it feel even more action-y. To each his own!

  • BadwrongBadwrong TokyoRegistered User regular
I have auto attack off. Its unreliable in PVP.

I also don't have any weapon skills on the keyboard, they are all done with my thumb on my right mouse hand. So its not hard at all to hit the attack over and over with my thumb.

You also gain the advantage of hitting more, because auto attacks that miss mean you might be in recovery animation when you could be hitting. When you manually tap the attack button with your mouse thumb, you can time it so you always hit. People are GOING to roll and GOING to try to avoid being hit, of course in PVE auto attack is great, but if I'm PVPing... auto attack means less damage and hitting less.

For example with slower weapons its much more noticable. Say I have auto attack on, and I hit a guy in front of me, he then rolls to my side and as I turn to keep him targeted my guy attacks the air. Then when I have him directly where I can hit him again my weapon already just finished swinging so there is a small time gap where I'm not hitting him. If I do this manually, I hit him once, he rolls, then I hit him again.

Please don't theorycraft this to pieces, some weapons are so fast this doesn't matter. Ranged stuff varies too, like guardian staff's auto attack hits in a AOE cone in front of them... so obviously I would toggle auto attack on in that situation. But for slower swinging stuff like a hammer or greatsword I prefer to have auto attack off and set my own swing rythym with the movement of my target.

Hmmm that is interesting. The one thing that I would like to point out (Anon, feel free to comment on this) is that Anon spends a lot of time scouting and going off the grid so to speak. It's something he is very good at. Giving him the commandar book kinda drops him into a different role. Sure he can turn the icon off when he wants to, but ideally don't we want someone who can leave their icon on more often than not?

I think he has all the leadership qualities for sure but I feel like we'd almost be losing something by throwing an icon on him.

Myself, Anon, and Dysprosius spent a LOT of time running around wvw last week and the week before. I can say Anon has no problem leading the bigger bits of action. I think the discussion was sparked because @Mojojoeo said he couldn't consistently be here for these Friday nights, which is kind of a big deal for the matchup switch. Either of you is a good choice; hell BOTH of you are the best choice.

EDIT - In case that wasn't clear, keep on donating here and there and we can get them both commander-ized OR we can start an upgrade fund for keeps and the like. Just, you know not against SoS or other servers with massive Oceanic wuvwuv crowds.

This is an argument for, not against. Commander has to be dealing with a lot of information flow. I think Mojo would agree based on previous wuvings. Dealing with a battle first hand is harder because you need to keep map awareness and battles can be pretty intense.

In my opinion even if you are the best leader I still don't think putting it on you makes sense. It doesn't NEED to go to the best leader. The best leader will still be there and will still be on TS3 tossing out orders. The icon needs to go on someone who can spend lots of time herding parts of the zerg places and is still one of our top guys. I'm going to put a strong vote for PLEASE DON'T PUT IT ON ANON. I will pop on TS3 later to try and discuss this further if we need to. I just think it's a poor strategical move.
