My biggest problem with SR3 is just that I thought SR2 had a much better story, to be perfectly honest. It's just the gameplay itself if more finely tuned, which makes it hard to go back to SR2.

I really wanted to grab SR3 this weekend, but my gaming budget got blown at Gamestop picking up a few games for my PS3 during a b2g1 sale. I hadn't really bought much for the console over the past few months so it gives me some games to play when I don't want to hit the basement for PC goodness. kind of bummed, I was pretty excited to finally play SR3 but it's a long winter in Maine I'm sure I'll eventually grab it.

SR3 was a fun game, though I hope they get more creative with the gameplay next time around. Lets face it, escort missions just aren't that fun.

    In Dissenting Opinion:

I thought SR3 was hurriblez. Tacky game with sloppy gameplay. Bummed I bought it for like 33% off sticker. 2/5, would not play again.

Did you play the original JSR? I've heard that unless you're returning for nostalgia sake the game isn't really worth the time. I watched the GB Quick Look and decided to pass, I've never played the original but it didn't look like it's held up. That's just my opinion on it however.

This story of the computer cheating, ironically involves a human opponent. In game after countless game of Tecmo Bowl for NES, my cousin and I battled SF vs LA. I had the godlike Bo Jackson and the unsung greatness of Marcus Allen. He had the cheap Shot Gun play. If you aren't familiar with the play style of Tecmo Bowl, here's a primer. It's kinda a rock paper scissors defense system. Before each down a play selection screen comes up, it only shows offensive plays. Both players pick an offensive play, if defense picks the same play as the offense, they get bum rushed and sacked or intercepted (since the defense knows what patterns to run). That is, unless you are SF and use your Shut Gun play. From a normal formation, the D line breaks through the O line before you can get off a pass, however, the shot gun formations gives you just enough time to toss the ball. Now in most instances this would just end up with tossing an interception, once again there is a however. The tight end runs a short slant across the middle of the field, and for some reason leads his defender enough that you can complete the pass and gain 5ish yards. Now this isn't necessarily the computer cheating, just poor programming/play-testing. However, one time my cousin was abusing the shot gun play, so it was pretty much all I was picking when I was on defense. He was slowly creeping down the field. Before each snap, you could choose which defender to control. I tried controlling the defender who covered the tight end, but he would still complete the pass. The time frame for throwing the pass is really short, since the D line is rushing in on the QB, so the tight end normally caught the ball in the same spot. Before a snap, I saw that I had correctly picked defending against the shot gun play, so I chose to control the one safety that wasn't covering a receiver going long. When the ball was snapped I simply moved my safety right to where the tight end would be catching the ball. Sure enough my cousin tossed it that way. I sat there, satisfied that I was finally going to defeat the stupid cheap shotgun play. Then as the tight end and the ball headed towards me, my safety, legs unmoving, magically slid down and away the spot I had parked him at, and the tight end, with my safety no longer in his way, caught the ball. After that the memory is blurry. I might have rage quit. I might have resorted to physical violence, I might have put an IED in the cart and mailed it back to Tecmo.

tl;dr - I set my defender to intercept, the computer moved him out of the way so that the pass was completed. Rage.

I've been avoiding SR3 because playing as a criminal in open world games doesn't really appeal to me. Then this free weekend happened.

"Oh, I'll just try it out for an hour or two", I said.

I'm four hours in, I need to get up in less than five hours, and I don't need to spend money on another game. Argh.

Y'all were right, this game is hilariously over-the top fun.

Good thing there is/was a free weekend of Saints Row the Third! Otherwise I might've bought it.

Cutscene video and audio are horribly out of sync! Googling got me several "tips" on what might fix it, none of it works. It's appearantly a commong problem that was never fixed.

This is rather embarassing - did you know I owned Torchlight II? I now realize that back when I got my PC up and running I was gifted it - I just remembered this weekend so now I'm installing it! Hopefully it will take my mind of the temptation of SR3 and all the screenshots that make me want to pull the trigger :)

I think I found Saints Row The Third to be actually disappointing, if you had been hyped up like I had. It was just never...crazy enough for me, if that makes sense. Yeah, you could go around thrashing people with marital aids, but I played my game relatively straight: my Boss was a woman who dressed normally and took running her gang business/empire very seriously. So I guess that's my fault?

    Pretty much, yeah.

I use default boss, but I take the time to change into a different outfit and weapon set for each new mission. Moments that are merely fun, become amazing when you're skyjacking a cargo plane from mercenaries dressed as a combat-ready Pope.

Speaking of Jade Empire: Does the combat ever get better? I picked it up because of the hive mind love, and while the story is interesting enough, I feel like the combat is...bad. It feels like it's trying to be a cross between a beat em up and an RPG, but beat em up part isn't polished.

A little bit? It never gets great, but there are a number of places where it's passable. Remember that this is using the same combat engine as Kotor. It's really a beat-em-up on top of a clunky timer-based RPG battle system. How much I enjoy the combat seems to directly relate to what style I'm using. Some styles feel pretty good if you have some speed and damage upgrades. Stick to one or two styles you like and max them out. Just be aware that you're going to start coming across more and more enemies who are immune to everything but basic styles.

Stave fighting (golden star) is awesome because it's quick and responsive and attacks have a lot of reach. Although it's also weakish. Thousand Cuts is supposed to be fast, but the animations make it feel really laggy, and the short range means I activate it without hitting an enemy half the time. It's OK if you can use it in conjunction with Heavenly Wave.

I'm switching between them. And TL2 is only 20 bucks and extremely under priced. Runic games deserves your money. I also got the first TL for 5 bucks during a sale like most everyone else, so I don't have a problem spending full price on this one.
