Wait, clawed our way back from a population of 10,000? Are you asserting that there was an ancient, advanced civilization like Atlantis or Lemuria that was destroyed by a catastrophe and we had to slowly dig our way out of the rubble? Or did you just phrase your thought poorly?
Option C?
I said, "possibly" because of course there is some debate over the magnitude and extent of the near extinction.
Plus you have to consider human resiliency in the face of stuff like disease. It's almost a miracle in some ways that Native Americans survived as a culture. In some places 90% of the population was killed off from diseases accidentally introduced by Europeans. We can't even begin to fathom rebuilding a society or culture after enduring a loss of that magnitude, yet somehow, they did by force of badass.
I've seen some people claim that our current society is too 'fragile' to withstand a loss of that kind, but I think that really, ridiculously undervalues the extent to which even basic technologies like penicillin and the combustion engine would be in aiding a recovery.
I'm rambling a bit, but the point is, we don't know what kind of catastrophe is coming next. But there's no reason to assume the future will be all BDSM gear, spikes, and motorcycles.
Native American culture got eviscerated though.
But what about all the casinos and swank liqour-free reservations

It's like getting the consolation prize while your competitor runs you over with his new car.
but that would imply we're actually willing to give them anything.

Granted, but the alternative is non-existence. We're talking about survival.
I'd take crappy with the possibility of improvement over flat-out extinct.
Coming back from a 90% population hit with any kind of culture is pretty miraculous.
A few pages ago people were just like, "oh yeah, society's doomed btw."
I don't think that's true, although inequalities between and within countries are likely to get worse. Technology is not infallible, but in the past 150 years we've seen some stunning developments to how humans fundamentally live. I can't imagine what the world will look like 500 years from now, and that's a blip on Earth's time scale.
In 10,000 years, we may well have gone interplanetary and beyond.
Are FriendZone Tees just for the guys?
Not at all! Being planted in the "FriendZone" is not a uniquely male problem. Women have been known to land there as well.
One of the four FriendZone Tee launch designs depicts a woman that has found herself in the "FriendZone". The FriendZone Tee supports gender equality
How much would you spend, and what would they have to do for you to consider replacing your current limbs with one?
You're not really giving us enough information. You're treating this as if all robot limbs are exactly the same.
Well, Since it's largely a question of "what do you want in a robot limb" setting down ground work beyond "it's an artificial limb replacing your own" is stifling the creative process.
If there was a real robotic limb replacement market i would ask if you wanted a Sony AP-1934 or a Samsung, but there ain't so what do you want robot limbs to do?
If I could get a robot arm that was shaped like a normal human arm with the same range of motion and dexterity, but stronger and faster, and maybe another useful feature or two, I would definitely get one installed
I think I made a thread about this a while back...
there is no part of my body i wouldn't replace with a robot part given the opportunity
Well, I can think of one or two, because I think it'll be a little while until the various sensing nerves can be reproduced sufficiently well to provide adequate sensation. It's a very important part of life after all.
How much would you spend, and what would they have to do for you to consider replacing your current limbs with one?
Just my left arm, and perhaps my legs below the knee. Get some of those sweet carbon fiber springs and run and jump like whoa.
I'd also make sure to get a cellphone integrated into my robot arm. The thumb would be the speaker, the pinkie would be the mic, and the screen could be in my forearm under a protective cover.
Oh, I would also like a direct brain-to-computer interface because that would also be rad.
I don't think I'd be down for being a cyborg
for one, robot limbs wouldn't be that great while retaining an organic frame, and two it would just be a constant reminder that that one limb is so much better than the rest of me
What I mean, is 10% survival is better than 0%. I'm not discussing NA colonization, or oppression or their current social situation. I'm pointing out that the fact they survived as a people against one of the worst bio-disasters in history is an amazing example of human perseverance. To quote Cracked, (yeah yeah, laugh it up) an Apocalypse isn't something theoretical, we're living on top of one.
I'm not trying to lighten the tragedy of what happened to them over the years.

I'm so glad people are taking to wearing warning signs.
He has that thousand yard stare that comes from many years fighting in the gender wars.
i just remembered the no-linking kickstarters rule
Can't I just get a couple of extra ones? That seems far more useful.
