PhotoStream and my iPad backups are what eat up most of my iCloud space.
But yeah, sounds like you wanted iTunes Match. Honestly, they'll probably be happy to help you out. Just tell them what happened. Apple's support department is actually pretty nice and pretty flexible for the size of company they are.
Photostream doesn't actually count towards your iCloud storage. It's just a 1000 photos! No more! It does back up photos on your device in icloud backup, but you can turn that off (in icloud backup settings) because if you have photostream enabled on a pc or mac it will automatically download it there, reducing the need for another backup.
@Syndalis, are you sure about niche music counting towards your icloud backup? I have quite a bit myself but I can't find anything about it anywhere. As for the 25,000 song limit, this only refers to songs you did NOT buy through the itunes music store (e.g. You pirated or ripped from cds) if you only download from the ITMS it's basically infinite.
Positive.
The 25000 number refers to
Your music, no matter where you got it aside from
apple. That said, apple has the largest library of music in the world, so if your song is on their server somewhere already, you don't upload it. They just flag you as being able to download that song off the cloud to all your devices.
If you have a bootleg concert recording in your iTunes collection, it will upload that into your iCloud storage and let you use it in iTunes Match as if it were part of their collection, at the expense of some of your storage.

Anyone know of an app or other solution to let me transfer my camera roll to my Mac mini without iTunes or iPhone and a cable? Basically I want to just walk in my house wifi and have it transfer the pics off my phone to the mini

no I don't want photostream, I want it on a folder on my mini. Also I only have a free dropbox account and I don't want to fill it up with pictures. I ended up getting CameraSync app that allows me to upload to an FTP server when I'm at home and on my wifi (using geofencing). It's pretty awesome. I don't even have to open the app.
Hey just an update on my issue from a page back if anyone cares, my wife called Apple and explained the issue and they refunded her the money! So thank you for the advice.
She still has no room on her phone so that's a problem but she'll likely just get a new phone.

The American way.
I know, it's baffling. I upgraded my GS3 storage to 32 GB with a 16 dollar microSD card...
At least she can still get most of the cost of her 4S back by selling it.
Does anyone know of a jailbreak tweak that would let me use a bluetooth keyboard as a substitute for touch screen commands? Looking for something that will let me map swiping left and right to the left and right arrow keys so that I can turn pages in comiXology and ComicZeal with the keyboard. I tried BTstack Keyboard, but it's terribly out of date and I can't do anything with it except toggle it on and off in 6.1.2.
Best way to record an iOS device screen and then annotate it (as in, call out taps and swipes and stuff)
GO
Run it in simulator after compiling in Xcode, and you can record using QuickTime, complete with showing interface use calls.
Unfortunately, it's not my app. It's one we're using for some of our staff at work, so I don't have access to the source.
In the meantime I used Reflector to record the actions while fake-clicking and mousing around onscreen to mimic the gestures I was performing on my phone, then used ScreenFlow to add in some captions and turn the mouse pointer into a generic 'circle thingy.'
It's crazy that there's no good single-purpose tool for capturing gestures & whatnot for demos.
Right, so I spent a fair amount of time digging around this evening and came across BeeKeyboard. Which is a pretty awesome tweak in itself, but becomes much more useful when combined with the BeeAppControl addon which lets you map taps and swipes (well, apparently only one swipe gesture in its current alpha state). This is actually really handy for a lot of stuff besides comic apps, such as Chrome. I've mapped tap inputs to keyboard shortcuts that lets me do most of what I do in Chrome on the PC to the iOS version of Chrome (forward and back, refresh, etc). So I've been spending most of the evening going through my apps and setting specific in-app touch input-to-keyboard shortcuts.
Does having so much fun playing with a keyboard that I was absolutely giddy with anticipation of receiving make me a nerd or something?
The keyboard cover I bought is this backlit one from Luvvitt (ordered mine when it was on Amazon). Apt company name, as I am loving it (YEAH, I WENT THERE!). I was using it in bed for a bit and the iPad never felt like it was going to slip out from the magnetic bezel (there's also a small support that pops up behind it that makes the connection more secure and props it up at a very pleasant viewing angle). However, I did try picking it up by just the iPad while it was still attached and the magnet did give way if you did not pick it straight up by the sides of the iPad. So it's strong enough to hold it in place when it's laying on a flat surface and if you pick it straight up, but not strong enough to overcome odd angles. Bonus for those of you with BOOKBack skins; they don't intefere with the keyboard cover at all. Dunno if that's a problem with the Logitech or the ZAGGKeys, but I can confirm that it isn't with the Luvvitt.
I'm finding typing surprisingly easy on it. I usually have a hell of a time typing on non-standard, small keyboards (like the one on my mom's netbook, which this is similar to), but I cruise right along on this. It does occasionally miss or double a keystroke, which could be due to something with the device itself or my sort of unusual typing style. In any case, it's nothing more than a slight annoyance and doesn't hinder the device from fulfilling my needs. And as I mentioned, it's backlit, so typing in the dark or by monitor light (I do both a lot) no longer poses any issues for me. You can adjust the brightness level of the backlighting, and you can pick between 7 colors. I tend to use green or white as they seem to illuminate best (red and dark blue the worst, though the dark blue is my favorite to look at). I'd been shopping for a backlit keyboard solution for my PC, and while fiddling around with the Luvvitt I remembered that I had a USB Bluetooth dongle buried in a box of misc computer accessories. I dug it out, set it up, and was very pleased to see that the Luvvitt connects to my PC without issue. So I can use this as backup/alternative PC keyboard if need be. Slight bummer that I can't connect it to the iPad and PC at the same time, but oh well :P.
Multimedia keys are fantastic additions that I think most other covers already have. The only ones I can't get any use out of the are the Spotlight/Finder search key (because I disabled it with Springtomize) and the "change keyboard language" key, which I eventually remapped as the "open edit mode" key for BeeAppControl. The "show onscreen keyboard" key feels largely pointless, but all of the multimedia and brightness controls are wonderful to play with, as is the dedicated homescreen key.
Why has the "something is using your location information" icon been on all day? It didn't used to be and I haven't downloaded anything new in the past day or so..
When batteries go out, does it tend to happen suddenly?
My iPhone 4 just started to not even be able to hold a full charge overnight, and drains crazy quick in general, starting just this Friday. Has anyone had something like that happen and know of a fix that worked for them?

Good thought, but I actually only updated today, so I doubt it. I've only had it for a year, but I am a crazy heavy user, as it is a work phone for a sometimes mobile, on-call job, so I wouldn't be *too* surprised if the battery just needs replacement...
DODOcase is having a one day 48% off sale, with about 14 hours left. Appears to include all of their products, including BOOKbacks which I have on my iPad 3 and iPhone 5 and love dearly.

The new update is confirmed by many users to be causing battery problems.
To be fair, almost every single iOS update ever has resulted in lots of users complaining of decreased battery life.
This is very true. It's been my experience that people's perception of battery life is very skewed compared to actual usage. Oftentimes, they're using the device more than usual for whatever reason and just think their usage habits haven't changed. I always ask for a screenshot of the battery usage when it's at 10% or less so I can make a proper judgement call whenever I'm asked to troubleshoot a battery issue with any device.
Heh. iOS has auto-corrections for Apple products. I've seen it with iphone -> iPhone etc, but I just typed "ipad smart cover" and it got corrected to "iPad Smart Cover".

Question: if my wife and I both get iPhones, how does that work with, say, music that I have bought via iTunes?
Can I authorize her phone to be able to play that content? Or do we both have to sign in with my account?
You would both have to use the same iTunes store account. My wife and I do this and it works out perfectly. This is totally separate from your Apple ID accounts for Find My iPhone, iCloud backup, and email accounts, where you can both put in your own individual Apple IDs for those services.

Ah. I was combining the Apple ID with the store account. Separate things, though. Cool. Thanks.

So I am out of my contract on my iPhone. I am currently with AT&T and have an iphone4. Is it possible for me to switch to tmobile and keep this phone? Or would I have to get a new one? I'm trying to get around the subsidized phone part.
Alternate question, if I were to switch but get a different phone, could I still use my iPhone for email/iMessage in a wireless area?

First question: Yes, although T-Mobile uses different frequencies for their 3G service (LAST TIME I CHECKED, that is), so your iPhone 4 would work, but data would be at old 2G/Edge speeds. Of course, this would also require AT&T to unlock your iPhone for you. Reports say they are typically willing to do this now, as long as your contract is up. I wouldn't mention the moving to T-Mobile bit, though. Tell 'em you want to use it overseas or something.
Second question: Yes, you could still do that, too. Devoid of a sim card and cellular network, your iPhone will act as a big expensive iPod Touch. You'll be able to use all the normal data stuff when you're on wifi.

A question for you fine people: can I move my music library on to my storage drive and have it continue to save files there without itunes throwing some kind of shitfit, or do I need to reinstall itunes itself to that drive? My SSD is getting pretty cramped and that library is the biggest offender.
Yeah, you can change the location in the preferences. You may have to do File → Library → Organize Library to move everything to the new location after changing it.
I would recommend copying your whole My Music/iTunes folder to the external drive, then open iTunes while holding Shift. Select the option to choose a library and browse to the copy on the other drive.

Is it possible to have the iTunes Library in two different places? I'd like to move the bulk of my Library onto an external drive, but keep my movies on the internal one.
The external has a lot of extra space, so if it all has to be in one spot, is there a way to have a movies folder on my internal drive that mirrors the movie folder in my iTunes Library on the external?
Easiest way to accomplish this would be to remove the movies from the library, move the rest of it to the external drive as I mentioned, uncheck iTunes' "copy items to iTunes Media Folder location when adding to library" in Advanced preferences, then add the movies to the library from their location on the internal drive.
