Ok, so my wife's 5s came in today and we are going to set it up tomorrow. Critical question: she has a Candy Crush save on her iPod Touch that she doesn't want to lose (along wih some other app data, but this is the most important). Assuming the iPod is backed up to iTunes already, is there anything I need to do to move this over?

Some games and things can back up data to iCloud, you should be able to look through the settings to see if it can do that.

It didn't. I was just able to do a restore from the iPod backup when I setup the iPhone, though. Everything seems fine so far.

Ever since the update to my iphone 5 I've got 8 gigs of "unknown" on my phone that I've been unable to find, which is pretty ridiculous since I only have like a gig of music and a book on it. Does anyone know of anything to basically flush it out? I'd expect a gig or two of unknown for the actual OS, nothing more.

Try exploring it via Settings > General > Usage > Storage at the top lists all apps and the size they take.

A lot of the time that's app cache. Things like photos cached from Facebook or Instagram can build up, and they're supposed to be flushed regularly, but sometimes it doesn't happen. If that's the case, deleting and reinstalling the app will fix it.

Also if you use iMessage alot to send pictures and video all of that is retained forever in iMessage unless you delete the whole message thread. My wife's phone has iMessage eating up 2GB of her storage(and iCloud storage). IOS7 did actually change things a little so you can actually see how space iMessage is taking up if you are using iCloud for messages it'll show you how much space the backup for iMessage is using.

Has there been any official word on if characters/saves from BG:EE will carry over into BG2:EE on iOS? BG's half off and I'm prepared to buy it now despite the big bug patch not being out yet if that's the case.

so... my phone just gave me an activation error about 20 minutes ago that I wasn't registered for the developer program. and i can't do anything on the phone except access emergency calls.

I did use the beta but it updated to the release version whenever it came out and my phone is up to date. There shouldn't be a dev issue if i'm on the release client and I have no idea what to do now.

on itunes it says the software on my phone has expired ad needs to be updated but the update options says everything is current.

yeah i've been going through the apple support forum and apparently this hit a lot of people dev or not. Also the dev site errors out or is overloaded or something right now.

the only suggestions i've seen so far were someone reported apple told them to wait out the outage and others are saying to just nuke your phone in DFU mode and start fresh.

I should probably do the backup no matter what though.

edit: ahh hell I can't back it up.

it says can not do it because "an active session could not be started."

fun extra level of annoyance. I can't restore to my previous backup or do a full restore because i have to turn off find my iphone on my phone which I have no access to. I guess that explains why some people are using DFU mode restores.

Turn the phone off, go to icloud.com and sign in, go to Find My iPhone and remove the phone from it there.

Very quick upload because I haven't used it much but I am very impressed. What I like is that it saves the original image direct onto a micro SD in the camera lens and sends a smaller 2mp image to save to the iPhone.

Uploaded a few pics from my iPhone 5S. Quality if pretty decent. If I had to point out a fault it seems the compression of low contrast areas (like sky and clouds) looks pretty mottled to me. Otherwise I'm very happy with it (compared to my old iPhone 4). Links to pics below (some pics are huge, like the panorama is around 13MB). All are unmodified.

The Audiophilia thread is ignoring me, so I'll ask here...

I need a new pair of sound isolating earbuds. The cord on my old ones went bad. Looking to spend less than $150 but I could go to $200 for the right pair. They'll be used with my iPhone 5s and lossless sound files.

On that note, anyone know how the music chip in the 5s compares?

  • minor incidentminor incident expert in a dying field njRegistered User regular
I don't mean to be overly blunt, but honestly I don't see much of a point in sub-$150 earbuds for lossless audio files.

Either don't bother with lossless on the go, or if you feel like you need them, spend a lot more on your earbuds, or go with studio quality headphones.

Lossless can absolutely have a slight edge over v0 or 320kbps encoded mp3s, but you're not going to be able to tell them apart if your life depended on it coming out of an iPhone on your commute through $150 earphones. I'm pretty obsessive about this stuff and I don't even know for sure if I could always tell the difference between lossless and v0 on my best headphones through my stereo and headphone amp.

Well, my collection is already 1,700 or so records all in lossless, so...

And yeah, I can tell the difference between a $50 pair and a $150 pair. This isn't the first time I've bought in-ears before, I'm just wondering if anyone has seen any good deals or has a recent recommendation. It's been about a year since I've bought a pair.

I don't mean to be overly blunt, but I was asking for advice, not to be talked down to.

    I'm fine with Apple's In-Ear headphones actually.

I found 'em on clearance at Target for like $40 a few years back though, so I might be a tad bit bias.

No one's talking down to you, man. I'm just offering advice, because it seems like you're squandering the potential in your music, so the most logical options are to upgrade your output to match your source, or downgrade your source (and save space on your portable) to match the quality of your output. Especially since you won't hear a difference in v0 versus lossless using any headphones in the price range you're discussing.

In my opinion, the best match for lossless audio in that price range is going to be something like the Etymotic HF3's (which you can find for around $120 now). But seriously, if you're going through all the effort of keeping all your music in lossless formats, you're really going to get a lot more out of it if you just save up a bit more for a set of in-ears like Shure SE535's, or the UE 900's, or something similar.

About $180, which is about $100 more than those things are worth. I'd honestly say the Apple in-ears are all around better than those B&W's.

Are the in ear ones not as good as the over ear models? because I know from experience the P5's are amazing. The Apple in ears from what ive used are just cheaper version of the base Bose model.

  • minor incidentminor incident expert in a dying field njRegistered User regular
The on-ear B&Ws are really nice. Excellent headphones. Not my taste, because I don't really like on-ears, as opposed to around-the-ear 'phones, but the sound quality is great. The in-ears are overpriced garbage, sadly. I mean, they're not awful, but the MSRP is more than double what they should be worth based on sound quality and comfort.

As for the Apple in-ears, are you thinking of their old in-ears from a few years ago, or these newer ones? The newer ones are actually pretty decent quality dual-driver IEMs. Not the greatest thing ever, but better that I would have expected, for sure.

Well, telling me that I'm wasting my time and that I can't hear the difference (which I can) is pretty much that. Anyway...I feel like there's got to be a middle ground between $150 and $500.

I would gladly wager 100 bucks that no one here (myself included) can consistently tell the difference between lossless files and v0 mp3s through midrange earphones and an iPhone.

Because no one can. But really, I'd love to take someone up on it. Seriously, there's a thread over at Head-Fi where a bunch of users do some blind A/B testing between FLAC and Lame v0 and only like half of them (supposedly) can reliably tell the difference. And that's with a bunch of audiophiles using predominately high-end DACs, headphone amps, studio-quality cans, and serious concentration. Using the sort of hardware you're talking about? Absolutely impossible. You may not agree with the facts, but that doesn't mean they're not true.

That said, and back to your other point, there's not a lot of middle ground, actually. The thing is that $150ish is about the high end limit for most consumers, and "professional"-quality ones start in the $300+ range. There's just not a huge market for that dead zone in the middle. A few decent models show up in that range, like the Monster Turbine Coppers, and the Shure SE3xx. But most of those are just not a great value proposition compared to the next model up or down. But speaking of, if you come across the Monster Turbine Coppers for under $200, snatch them up. Really great earphones. Or the Gold version if you see it around $150 or less, for that matter, those two are pretty much the best headphones Monster ever made, before or since.
