Way to take shit all superseriousbusiness and act like a huge douche to someone trying their hardest to be light-hearted, friendly, and as helpful as possible to you, despite yourself.
You didn't help me with anything. You just told me that I was wasting my time and that I shouldn't bother. Seriously, stop it before I grab a mod. You've already broken the Grand Edict.

Totally worth it, though, after trying to be nice about it while you keep throwing it back in my face. Go ahead if you feel slighted. I won't complain or hold it against you. Or pretend I said "goose" if it makes you feel better. I don't care.
And I'm pretty sure I gave plenty of useful advice about your situation. I tried to help you save a ton of space on your iPhone by suggesting you change file formats since you aren't benefiting from Lossless, and I gave you a whole range of suggestions on headphones at varying prices that would work well for your application. When you said you didn't want to change formats, I offered suggestions on headphones that might help you take some advantage of the overkill you're carrying around in your lossless files on your iPhone.
Unfortunately you made a wild claim that is demonstrably impossible and I expressed my skepticism and invited you in a friendly manner to try to prove it (because, for reals, I would be totally amazed if you could, and it would be well worth a wager), at which point you took even more offense and shut down any and all reasonable discussion as though I had perpetrated some horrible and shocking injury against your character.
I just don't know what the to do with you, man. Maybe, I don't know, relax a little? It's music. If you ask for advice, people are gonna try to help you get the most out of what you've got. If something is a waste of your time or money, I'm certainly gonna tell you. There's no need to get all ruffled about that.
For now, I'm just going to assume you misinterpreted my initial suggestions as coming across a little too harshly and/or matter-of-factly. If that's all it was, I'm sorry I gave you that impression. Certainly wasn't my intention.
If it's something else about what I said that upset you so much, well, I don't really know what to tell you, dude, but you're welcome to take this over to PMs with me and try to figure it out.

Nothing Minor incident has said is untrue.
If you can actually tell the difference between FLAC and 320kb/s files played through the iPhone soundchip and into a cheap set of earbuds, I will convert to Catholicism, because you must be God.
If you want to hear all the nuance of your higher quality sound files, you're going to need a player with a better quality DAC chip, or use a supplementary pocket ampDAC, and some decent IEMs, like these.

As a tech nerd and audio snob of at least 20 years, when you're wildly off-base about audio gear I think it's okay if I correct you.
Yeah, I'm with minor here, but that said, perhaps we should all just let the issue drop? Neither side is willing to meet on the middle, Esh's question has been reasonably answered, and hey, how about the rumours of the new thinner iPads? Those are pretty tempting looking, yeah?

Yep. I've taken it to PMs and arranged a play date with Esh so we can hug it out. No worries.
But yeah, I wouldn't say no to a thinner iPad, but I'm fully an iPad mini lover nowadays. I'd love to see a retina mini so I can trade up. That'd be the biggest upgrade I could hope for, and really the only thing I miss from my full size iPad.

the camera is better than my standalone camera, the LTE is faster than my home internet (i didn't bother with mobile data on my 3gs, since the phone was pretty janky and i figured why pay for data... now i'm on the tmobile unlimited data, unlimited messaging, 100min plan), the graphics on games look great, etc. i'm pretty blown away by the experience
on this note: are there decently priced alternatives to the bundled pods? i'm not looking to spend anywhere near 150. i was using klipsch s4i II in-ears with my old phone but the durability is just so terrible. i've had three pairs and after a short time, one of the monitors (not even the same ear all three times) shits the bed and maxes out at maybe 10% volume (the other works fine). to klipsch's credit, they have replaced each broken pair with no complaints and haven't even asked me to return the defective pairs. but i'm just exhausted by it and the warranty's dead anyway, so.
i'd probably be okay with the bundled pods except i prefer the silicon/rubbery/foam style to plastic buds. the vast majority of my music is either 320kbps mp3, vbr mp3, or the 256kbps aac produced by itunes match.

I'll second that. I got a pair of SE215's (actually their precursor without the detachable cables) like 6 years ago from a Shure rep at my old job. They've been through hell. Thousands of hours commuting, traveling, being tied up and tossed in my bag every day, and now even though I've retired them from daily use in favor of other pairs, they're still in perfect condition and sound great. Even more amazingly, I'm only on the second pair of Shure's foam olive tips on them.
Really great, reliable headphones, and I love the Shure sound curve. Nice thick cables, good strain relief on the joints, and the new ones have detachable cables so even if you do manage to fuck up a cable you can replace it for a few bucks.

Oh boy, after the new iPad announcements next week I think it's about time I get my first iPad. EEEEEEEEE!
Not just first iPad, but first tablet period.
I hear they are working on an iOS version of the Moga. I hope that my Moga Pro will just support it with the Pivot app release on the App Store and I don't have to buy a second one.
I need a simple and proven not-spam way to convert videos to be iOS compatible. I've tried a bunch of free programs from Google that either convert only half the video or install spyware on my PC. I just want a no-frills solution here.
Also, is there a way to find out how much data programs are using up per day?

And another vote for Handbrake. I've used it to convert countless DVD rips for playback on my iPhone and Apple TV. It's almost stupid how much better (and free-er) it is than every other option.

How difficult is it to set up Handbrake in an "automated" fashion? For example, I'm thinking about some way to have a folder I can simply drop a movie file into and have it auto-converted to an iPhone or iPad mini friendly format. Is that something that can be done without too much trouble using handbrake?
On a related note, What about MKV to AVI conversion?

Handbreak itself wouldn't support this sort of automation, and any way of doing it in an automated fashion is probably more trouble than it's worth.

go into Cellular in settings, and scroll down to the "use cellular data for" toggles.
There should be a number there that states how much data the app has used cellular data for, and the ability to turn the entire app's data off when on cellular only.

in the past i've had handbrake setup to do this with dropfolders http://ctl.du.edu/staff/josephlabrecque/DropFolders/ i see it hasn't been updated in awhile so i'm not sure how well it still works, but it only took around 10 minutes to setup back when id id it.
If you want super easy-mode video on your iPhone, get VLC Streamer.
Made by the kind folks who make VLC, it's an app you keep running on your PC and an app you run on your iPhone. It can browse your media folders remotely on your computer, convert and stream videos on the fly, or even allow you to download them for later view. No need to launch iTunes, heck, no need to even be at home. If you have set up port forwarding and have a static IP address (or a dyndns.org account), you can stream/download videos from ANYWHERE.
I used to use Handbrake, and yeah, it's still a top-notch solution.

I have Plex set up on my media center PC and use the plex app on the iPhone / iPad and it works pretty good. Sometimes, though, I want video when I don't have network access (flying, driving, etc.). That's partly why I asked about some automation...I want to be able to drag a couple of movies over, have them converted, then sync them to the iPad without having to think too much about it whenever I might want an offline movie.
I may check out the VLC Streamer, though, as it sounds pretty cool. Thanks!

The Handbrake suggestions certainly paid off. Thanks for that.
Still trying to find a working program for recording live streams so I can convert them later. Hulu ended up being the big data eater, so I've had to stop streaming that during lunch breaks.
everyone recommends an 'otterbox', and as much as I like the name, I can't help but see that almost every review says that dirt and dust gets under the screen cover very easily.
also, does anyone know a good 'app' for GPS? I want to be able to tag a location in the middle of the woods and essentially have the iphone walk me there. Is such a thing possible?
pandora seems fun! are there any radio things like pandora only without an ad every other song?
Looks like I've got my first scratch on my glass today. I dunno where it came from, but if I were to guess it's likely from an errant coin I had in my pocket yesterday I just found.
Ah well, I managed a month with no imperfections. I'd say that's pretty good.
