So my computer has this "click".....

Can anybody identify this computer problem that is now occurring to me?

I just woke this thing up from sleep or hibernate (tower desktop), and when I did, there's this clicking sound coming from the inside and it has a perfect rhythm to it. It partially locked up as it was reloading the few things I had up, so I decided to do a forced power off. When I tried to turn it back on, it took about twice as long to boot up if not longer. Occassionally the rhythm changes for a moment, but for no reason I can see.

I'm fully booted up and I can't see anything wrong now in terms of performance speed/reaction to commands, but this click is still happening. Right now, it's about 4 clicks/second, with a slight pause every 14th click.

Why is my tower clicking?

Edit: Clicking changed to about once per second, and I swear I'm hearing a flap inside it being moved. Like you wanted to look at the inside of a VCR through the tape slot, so you stick your finger onto the flap at the tape slot, and then move your finger out of there so you could hear the flap hit the side as hard as it could.

Edit 2: Now it's back to 4 clicks a second. And a couple of minutes later, went back to once a second with flap sound.

Almost certainly a hard drive dying. Back up your data ASAP and get a replacement drive before it fails catastrophically.

I've got two hard drives: the one that came with this computer, and one from an older one that I've been using to back up stuff from the newer one.

At startup, I checked them just from "Computer" and they were both there. Now, I can't see the older one.

    .....and the clicking just stopped.

As long as you have your priorities sorted! As an aside, tranny is a pretty offensive term

Tiny update: Drive still clicks on bootup and beyond, but checking my drives as soon as I can get to the desktop shows that the computer doesn't even see it, so I've since removed the drive. I'm guessing it's too dead to be recovered?

if there is something you really need off the drive you could try putting it in a ziplock bag, with a desiccant satchel, and then put that in your freezer overnight. Than you take it out, and plug it in right away and hopefully it will spin up enough to start pulling a few files.
