Oh, that reminds me. A bit of elaboration on the "no eBooks, please" thing for my Santa. Rae recently had a kindle dropped in her lap if there's anything we ever want to read digitally, but I still greatly prefer physical over digital.
Luddite. Digital is the future. The only books that should be on paper are comics and TPBs. In case it's not obvious, I LOVE my Nook w/ Glowlight. Best. eBook. Ever.
You sound like someone who hasn't read many comics on an iPad. Sooooo great.
I can vouch for this.
I just picked up a few titles last weekend on Comixology and some spreads really pop with the backlighting. It's really fantastic, and I only have an iPad2 (I imagine a 3 would look even more amazeballs).

You know, that really does sound incredible. I never really considered an iPad before.

One day I hope that have a house with a designated library/study. And you can't fill a bookshelf with an eReader. And don't get me started on eReader incompatibility with secret bookshelf doors! Really, though, this sums up a lot of my preference. I also dabble in bookbinding as a hobby, so I appreciate books for their physical construction. Not just for the words on the pages. I don't want to come off as a snob, though. Despite my strong feelings, I see it more like a decision between ketchup or mustard.
If I get an arty or writey Santee and find a source for quality paper, I'll try to put something together something for them.

Heh. As long as someone reads SOMETHING, they are alright by me. It's the ones who say "I don't have time to read" or "I'd rather watch a movie" that I don't trust...

That's pretty cool. I once took a bookmaking class to fill the printmaking requirement of my bfa. We did all the prints for the book, made the hard cover, an embossed plate for the cover, and bound it all together. It's probably different than a normal book but it was an awesome experience and finished project

Look, it's simple. You just open up the e-reader, locate "Count of Monte Cristo" in the contents, once it's open, swipe the screen to activate the switch that's displayed and that'll send an encrypted signal to the servos that open the hidden door to my secret, hidden library filled with real books.
I don't have thee space to read. Tiny bedroom and a phone that keeps running out of memory despite a ton of free space on the sd card slot.
Assuming its an android phone, they often like to use the internal memory to store data. In addition, they often have an "SDCARD" listed that really internal...there will be a separate "Removable_SD" or some such that indicates your actual SD card. That said, there are no excuses! E-Readers are cheap (under $100 for entry level) and take up NO space. If you are cash strapped then a trip to your local library costs you nothing but foot-power! Until I got my e-reader I ALWAYS had at least 5 books sitting next to my bed from the library. Now, I just download the books from the library, instead!
Can we tone down the "Where is my Santee?" posts? This is a crapton of eager gift-sowers to work through and Hypatia is some kind of hyper Santa that checks the list thrice. Perhaps even beyond that.

Well, I'm going to be without power for about a week or two, it seems. So, in addition to losing loads of money to spoiled food and other such storm-related damages and expenses, I'm losing my income for a while, as my bakery isn't reopening for a couple days, most likely.
So, I just want to apologize to my Santee. I'm afraid my gifting won't be able to be as elaborate as I would have liked, but I'll still work out something (hopefully awesome) for you. Just be patient with me, I might cut it pretty close to Christmas.
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
I think we need to make an addendum to the rules. Seeing as how this will be the last Secret Santa because of the apocalypse on December 21st, 2012, anyone who doesn't send their gift before it happens will be a deadbeat Santa. It's a harsh rule, but I think it's for the best.
Also, what kind of gift would be suitable for my dad? He's a good fellow, but I don't want to get him books like he seems to get every Christmas (my family does Secret Santa and I plucked the big man this year). He's one of those dudes who's very content in life and has what he wants, therefore a bugger to shop for :P
Is he an outdoors guy, or sports, or any other specifics?
For a generic dude gift, I always think fancy knives or flashlights are awesome. There are some flashlights that just blow my mind with brightness. It has become a weird hobby of mine, especially since I've started riding my bike to work in the dark, so it may not fit all manly interests.
I got him one of those gigantic swiss army knives when I was in Switzerland a few years ago, sooo good haha
He's a decent reader but I don't see him warming to a Kindle. Technology defeats him from time to time and he hasn't shown any interest in my mums Kindle. He keeps pretty fit by doing a lot of Bikrum yoga, but there's nothing much to buy for that.
He doesn't drink much booze (see fitness), so he's not like to get use out of novelty drinking instruments and/or fancy drinks themselves.
If he likes yoga type activities, www.theclymb.com has some good sales on yoga equipment from time to time. Weird stuff too that you might never use, but if he's a fanatic, I'm sure he'd find a use for them.
Nooks guys! Nooks! I work at Barnes and noble and no one ever mentions the nooks. Its all ipads and kindles. Comics are kickass on the nook! The new ones are even moreawesome! Probably! I Haven't actually held one yet! Or own one! But damn they are sexy looking.
Also, as far as alcohol goes, yes. More alcohol. MORE
Thats because you haven't experienced the joy of the Nook SimpleTouch with Glowlight(TM). It beats every other eReader hands-down. No contest. Just go home. Give it up.

The Kindle Paperwhite matches the Nook Glowlight I think . I prefer the Kindle because it seems that for indie/small authors, you can find a lot more of them in the kindle. I have a shit ton of books that I got for free or cheap on the Kindle, and they're not bad books at all, just genre fiction that big pubs don't think sell anymore.
And my Christmas movie tradition consists of Love Actually/Muppets Christmas Carol. I never watched It's a Wonderful life till I was older, and had no idea how much set up there is before George throws himself off the bridge.
Does the Kindle Fire have comic-books? I like Amazon stuff because I already have Prime and a Kindle, so it just makes sense to have brand loyalty when all my stuff is already there.
I like the kindle because the battery life is fantastic. I can only use it for reading books (which is all I want it for) so instead of having to charge a tablet every couple of days I only have to charge my kindle once every couple of months.
It should be Pointed out that both kindle and nook have LCD tablets and eink ereaders. The glow light is an awesome device, but the paper white is newer. The eink devices have hundreds of hours of battery life.

Yeah, I keep my book-reading to my Nook (e-ink) and stick to other stuff with the tablet. For reference, I read about 1 - 2 hours a day with the glowlight on and I can go about 4 - 6 weeks without charging. Most of the newer readers are about the same.

The battery on my 2nd gen kindle is getting pretty bad at this point. If I read like 3 hours a day, I usually have to charge it after like 3 or 4. Used to get like two weeks.

I apparently haven't ever seen that entire movie.
Muppet Christmas carol is the best though. For years I thought other versions were wrong for only having one marley brother
