When will RPG's start taking advantage dual monitor setups?
A lot of people - especially devs - have two monitors. But I've yet to play a game, let alone an RPG, that actually takes advantage of the second monitor. Now I know it's possible to stretch the whole game across the two, but that splits the image down the middle and makes it borderline impossible to play. But what if things like maps, character sheets, and so on and so forth where on the second monitor? It would free up space on the main play area.
DS for PCs. Even simple shit like stats or bag or map on the other screen makes a world of difference.

Supreme Commander did this, I believe. I expect there are some other games that have done as well.
As to "when"; when the majority of the gaming demographic has the disposable income and incentive to purchase a second monitor. Rather than just the hardcore demographic.
Indeed, I did hear that it did that. I haven't played it though.
Another thing that might be cool, although could be overkill, is a smartphone/tablet app that let you manage such things. This would even work for console games.
I would love it if, for example, Borderlands 2 kept my character menus on my second screen (maps, inventory, skill trees, achievements, etc).
I'm honestly excited about a BL2 Wii U port in the next year or two. For one thing it'll probably have all the dlc, for another, putting all that crap on the gamepad screen would be godly.
Also a better two player local mode then splitscreen.

Isn't this EXACTLY what the WiiU and Ms Surfaces are going for?
shit i thought everyone used 2 monitors on their desktops, i've been thinking about grabbing a second video card and going up to 3 or 4 monitors
What... this is a thing? Do you have a command bunker?
Some call it a home office, although I like the ring of command bunker moreso -
that said I do video editing, programming, and modelling on my pc so multiple screens is nice, especially when I can have 1/4 of my screens being a game of choice instead of 1/2, that one doesn't work so well for actual work
I ran dual for a while a few years back but was more a novelty for my purposes and actually interfered with a game or two at the time. But what I liked even better was the third monitor on a different pc controlled by synergy.
holy crap i just checked out this synergy thing, I have a spare pc sitting in my office and a 19" monitor I could totally set it up for! FREE SERVER HERE I COME!

Things are much different now. OS's at a very low level have dual monitor support. Most games will smartly load themselves on your primary display adapter (aka first monitor), but many games actually have settings that let you choose the adapter (Torchlight comes to mind).
Dual monitor is way more than a novelty now. I couldn't compute without it anymore.

In response to the OP: I'm not sure when it will happen, but if you want it to happen faster, I would start poking at some of these guys doing kickstarted RPG's...like maybe the Obsidian guys. Projects in that vein tend to be way more receptive to adding quirky features that only benefit a subset of gamers.
I was also going to mention: Actually while I think its really cool supcom2 takes full advantage of dual screen, I find it a bit annoying, because as of now usually when I'm just relaxing at the pc, I have netflix or something on my left monitor, and my game on the right monitor, supcom forces me to not watch tv while playing games.
Of course the solution is 3 monitors

It does't force you, you could turn the dual monitor support off...but I see your point. I do the same thing as you, I tend to be watching Netflix or Twitch.tv or ESPN or something on my second monitor, so it tends to be tied up with non-game related tasks. It's also where my Linux virtual machines goes when I am working on a development project in Linux.

I'm fine at home with my one 24" monitor, mostly because all I do at home is gaming and occasionally checking the news. I used to have a second monitor hooked up, but I didn't use it and it was just taking up desk space.
At work though, I've got dual 22" monitors and still feel cramped from time to time. I'd like to have one monitor just for Outlook, another just for Firefox / IE / Chrome, and then one or two working monitors for whatever other apps I'm using. Just had to spend a week away from my desk for training and had to work from my laptop's screen, and holy shit is it miserable getting anything accomplished on one screen.
If there were more games that supported dual monitors and actually made them useful, I would hook up a second monitor at home in a heartbeat. Having a second screen of information would be heavenly - a lot of RPGs, and a lot of MMOs could really use it. Eve really comes to mind as a game that felt super cramped on one monitor.
