A lot of Angry Video Game Nerd wannabes bitch about this installment on youtube, and it's true; the translation is irrevocably fucked and the clues make no sense. But you know what? WHO CARES. Oh, you have to do some random shit like crouch in a certain place to get some random thing to happen? Welcome to like, half the adventure/puzzle/quest games on the NES! It's not like Mario 3 was seeded with cunning clues about which of, like, ten million blocks you had to burst to get a warp whistle or whatever.
There are like three dumb puzzles in Simon's Quest and the rest of the game is just good old-fashioned Castlevania werewolf-whipping action, combined with world exploration, and it's fun and the controls are solid and you get some cool powers, and it all looks good and is set to a pretty great soundtrack.
I AM A THIRTY-THREE YEAR OLD MAN WHO HAS PLAYED TOO MUCH NINTENDO AND I HAVE SPOKEN
And I guess someone has made a fan remake? I wonder if it's any good.

Nintendo Power in the late 80s was the fucking bomb. It used to be bimonthly, but then they did this thing where on the "off" months they would produce a special issue devoted entirely to one game, and holy shit those were awesome. They had huge complete guides to the game (usually excluding the last level or so), maps, enemy stats, and behind-the-scenes goodness.
They also had those hilariawesome photographic and painted covers.
The name "Spha" was originally an acronym, derived from South Philadelphia Hebrew Association, and naturally the team's players were primarily Jewish. Many pundits of the time tried to explain this on the basis of genetics, stating that Jews were naturally more dexterous, had better rhythm, and more intrinsic athletic ability, exactly the same sort of comments that would later be made about basketball with regard to African Americans in later years. At times writers used more specifically (and derogatory) Jewish stereotypes: Paul Gallico stated that they did well because "the game places a premium on an alert, scheming mind".[1]

it pleases me that the stereotypes you joke about applying to black folks actually apply to you!

remember Jeff Rovin's How to Win at Nintendo Games?
I really liked these. He was a grown-up playing these (often really shitty, primitive) NES games and offering kind of blunt and honest opinions of them along with the cheat codes. It was reading these books that it first occurred to me that maybe some games, it wasn't so much that I was bad at them as that they were actually just shitty.

Echo, Nesta looks interesting but I am liking Jekyll and Octopress, although the theming is a solid pain in the ass. Took me forever to figure out how to change the background color of the content area.
Naming streets after people is a great way to have a person name live on without any damn meaning attached to it outside of being the name of some road.

the library at school had a subscription
on the field trips (or class periods?) in the library, you had to be fast to get it first
then all your friends would crowd around and you would read it together
