The [2012 Presidential Election] Thread Needs Moar Panic, Less Stacey...Dash? Who the...?

SammyFSammyF Registered User regular
edited October 2012 in Debate and/or Discourse
On 6 November, 2012, Americans will gather in churches and firehouses, community centers and school cafeterias across the country and select our next President. I think it'd be kind of interesting to dedicate each new POTUS OP to a different "also ran" third party or independent candidate, but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend that much time googling information about Virgil Goode. So let's focus on the topline for now:

The Incumbent:

18_mdf1420427-711525.JPG

Barack Obama. Formerly Democratic Senator of Illinois, born in Hawaii. Left of center politically. 44th President of the United States. Notable accomplishments: the nominal father of Obamacare, salvation of General Motors and the American auto industry, the assassination of radical extremist Osama Bin Laden.

He doesn't always look this dreamy.

The Challenger:

ap_mitt_romney_ll_120823_wg.jpg
Willard Mitt Romney. Formerly Republican Governor of Massachusetts, born in Michigan/Wisconsin/Colorado/Ohio/Virginia/Florida. Leans X=(3y+n^2)/Z^-2 of center. Notable accomplishments: the nominal grandfather of Obamacare, salvation of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games, the assassination of the radically moderate Governor Mitt Romney.

He doesn't always look this frumpy.

But it's sure been happening a hell of a lot more often over the past couple of weeks.

This is not a debate thread. The debate thread is over here. Head on over and talk about how it's much, much less exciting than you were expecting, and in retrospect you can't remember why you thought it was going to be game-changing somehow. Feel free to come back here and talk about the election tomorrow, by which point I will have probably made a much better OP.

Oh! Quick reminder. From the FAQ on one of my previous political threads:
Q: But Sammy! How ever shall I know if what I'm posting about is germane to the topic of this thread?

A: Great question, rhetorical device! Generally speaking, an election is held between two or more CANDIDATES who CAMPAIGN about various ISSUES before an electorate of VOTERS demonstrates an aggregate preference by casting ballots. If your post is therefore about a candidate, a candidate's campaign, an issue selected by a candidate's campaign, or a group or subgroup of voters, you are probably in the clear. If you notice that the post you're writing is about none of these things, maybe you should copy/paste it into your own thread? Also, for God's sake, if your post begins with any of the following phrases:

1. This may be off topic, but...
2. I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this, but...
3. On a vaguely related note...
4. I'm sorry to go off on a tangent, but...

Just delete it. You obviously know better.

ADDENDUM:

If your post contains the phrase, "Poppery" or "Papists," welcome back, Lorc the Orc! What, you're banned already? See you next month!

Edit: NEW ADDENDUM! The following post types are also not germane:

1. Posts that do nothing but link to someone else's opinion. This is doubly true if the preponderance of forum users is unlikely to know whoever it is you are talking about. If you want to share an obscure opinion, at least share your own. If a minor actor who had a recurring role on Boy Meets World wants his opinion shared here, he is more than welcome to register his own goddamned forum handle and start posting.

2. Anything that is exclusively about Atlas Shrugged.

Seriously stop it.

I endorse this thread and have no problem with mine getting locked. Since I overshot while drafting and Sammy got in just under the wire.

I endorse this thread because AMFE did the last one and also SammyF has the more distinguished avatar.

If I had saved the draft and refreshed the D&D page, I totally would have just deferred to your thread, AMFE. I don't want the responsibility of coming up with clever thread titles for three whole days until we hit 99 pages and it becomes Preacher's turn.

And I really liked a couple of yours.

They'll never let me have another presidential thread. Not since I made that disasterous Fred Thompson prediction.

You and me Tara, we are true believers. Unlike the RINO's like Graham and Boehnor.

You know I have to wonder, does Bachmann think people like Eric Cantor are RINO's? Or I guess the better question would be, does Michelle Bachman actually think?

I've heard that Boehnor has ties with the Mohammedan International. Just saying. Someone should interrogate him, to make him confess

Well that certainly goes without saying.

Okay so I think I should probably find a poll so we have something to talk about.

Things to remember when watching polls after tonight's debate: Nate Silver reminds us that the first debate almost always favors the challenger, but any gains are almost always made among undecided voters, and there are hardly any out there relatively speaking.

Which is why I'm probably not going to post in the threads during the debate or watch any of the coverage afterwards. While that will be important in order to know the actual impact on the electorate I'd rather avoid some of the potential for group think. Well, try to anyway.

Wait, she unliked him and went pro-romney because Obama's pro-women's health?

DO NOT UNDERSTAND. Like, the most basic reason to go "no shit birth control should be covered" is that it has medical uses beyond the contraceptive everyone immediately thinks of. It's just a sane fucking thing to cover for that reason alone.

Her whole thing was that people were going to be forced to prescribe or take birth control. And we were all like "That isn't even vaguely what is happening." and she wouldn't listen.
