yeah, it kinda felt like a cop-out. I mean hey cool that Naoto's comfortable with herself but to couch it in "Oh teehee I didn't actually want to be a boy" rings kinda hollow to me.
Also last night I did an item dungeon in Disgaea. It was fun. And then I looked at the time and it was 6 AM and I was like ffff.
yeah as admirable as the attempts are to tackle some of the issues presented in P4 are (and I don't want to give them too much credit for this despite japan being all kinds of backwards in that way), they really couldn't get the ball into the endzone there and settled for a field goal

Let me put it this way: the shot hit the post.
They tried to hit a home run and it went to the wrong side of the foulpole.
They went for the three and it bounced off the rim.

They still did a better job than (almost) any other game though.
Which is kinda saying at least they tried, but, you know, baby steps.
i think they did a pretty good job with kanji's character for what he was. if they had made him straight-up gay it wouldn't be better per se, just different. Unless you are coming from the position that the more gay characters the better, which i guess, but I'd rather have quality over quantity.

IMO a lot of Kanji fans don't get the difference between gay and effeminate. He's the latter.

and kanji's entire arc and primary character conflict, to me, was about his perception of femininity and homosexuality being inextricably linked and the identity crisis resulting
a.) gay men stereotypically enjoy feminine things
b.) i enjoy feminine things
c.) therefore i must be a gay man

i agree, but on the other hand when you beat his dungeon one of the things he says is something along the lines of "what if I'm not into girls? Would that really be a big deal?"

that's true
i think bugboy's 100% correct in that a lot of it just comes down to personal interpretation

he's attracted to naoto before anyone knows she's a girl
or maybe he's just flustered around her because he's not good at talking to other guys
I think it's really just up to personal opinion
Agreed, and I respect that Atlus deliberately left it open to conjecture.
As for Naoto, I personally think he was attracted to the ideal Naoto represented, something Kanji wasn't, and he was unsure about what that meant for his sexuality.
see I think there's a big cultural barrier that needs to be acknowledged too
japan's views on femininity and our own, applied to men or otherwise, are VASTLY different, and thus the views on homosexuality differ. What may appear as extremely homoerotic to japanese society as a whole may just appear very feminine to us in the west

Alright I've started over on Beginner and am now a little bit further than I was before. Some of my S. Links are at different values than what I was at but it's close enough, and the bosses/mini-bosses aren't absurdly strong anymore! I am level 20 and just reached the top of the third section of Tartarus, and was still level 17 when I fought the Beetles again (and beat them now!)
I never found Kanji ambiguous, just uniquely perceptive among the cast.
Naoto wants to be a detective, and she thinks she won't get taken as seriously if she's a woman (correct, unfortunately). I don't agree that thinking "Man, shit would be a lot easier if I was a dude" qualifies you as transgender.
That's sort of a spoiler speed? I dunno, I'm not a hardliner about this kinda stuff
but
P4 spoilers
I don't think Kanji would remotely be ready to date for realsies at any point during the storyline
big-ish p4 spoilers
man if they can have you convince naoto to stop being transgender they can have you ask kanji out
noooooooooo stop reminding meeeeeeeeeeeee
p4 spoilers
You don't "convince naoto to stop being transgender" because naoto isn't transgendered. They could have gone that route, and it'd have been cool if they had, but she wasn't at that point. She's got gender role issues and even straight up gender issues but the fact she gets beyond them means she's not transgendered.

More p4 spoilers
On the one hand, there is some evidence to point to naoto actually thinking they're a guy
but there's much more evidence to show that they're just afraid of being a woman instead of wanting to be a man
like there are times when p4 is incredibly well written and it charms the pants off of you
and other times there's
the swimsuit competition, wherein we need to learn that naoto actually has mega tits
Actually, Naoto declined the swimsuit competition, which is why she won, we learned about her measurements from the medical exam, please get your fluff events correct next time.

I dunno, I think I rank the new band scene above that. No homophobic creeper Yosuke, lots of Teddie fingers, Yukiko trying to play my favourite instrument.

It is a pretty fun game. I'm playing P3P and there are some things which make it a much nicer/easier experience than P3:FES but I would still recommend P3FES all the way.

Persona 3 FES is on the PSN
I've never played Persona

It's an anime thing, so kind of.

I have never disagreed with you more
I will win because I spent time training in dungeons while you went skiing on motorbikes or whatever the hell you do in the vita release
