For U.S., obviously.

If you're going to compare this month's stats to January's stats, remember that this January was considered a 5-week month. February is a regular 4-week month.

With regards to Jan vs Feb:
anybody saying wii sales took a big hit this month is way off base. here is a month over month npd comparison taking into account the missing week.

JAN NPD = 5 weeks

Wii = 437,000 /avg weekly sales= 87.4 (supply constrained)
360 = 295,000 /avg weekly sales= 73.75
ps3 = 244,000 /avg weekly sales= 48.8
DS = 239,000 /avg weekly sales= 47.8 (supply constrained)
PSP = 211,000 /avg weekly sales= 42.2

FEB NPD = 4 weeks

DS = 485,000 /avg weekly sales= 121.25 (big jump over last month = bigger shipment)
Wii = 335,000 /avg weekly sales= 83.75 (only slightly less per week)
360 = 228,000 /avg weekly sales= 57.0 (down a bit)
PSP = 176,000 /avg weekly sales= 44.0 (up a bit)
ps3 = 127,000 /avg weekly sales= 31.75 (around 60% of last months weekly avg = not good)

To sum it up. the wii sold almost exactly equal to last month if you take into account the missing week. If you add the weekly avg for feb 83.75 to 335.0 to compare the wii sales to last month you get 418.75 (compared to 437) which is a slight drop but probaly due to supply constraints.

To adjust for the ps3 month over month if you add 31.75 with 127.0 you get 158.75. (compared to 244.0) Clearly month over month wii is keeping pace with itself while sony took quite a dive. Xbox 360 also saw a bit of drop but not as drastic as ps3.

AND................GO!

    For the curious.....

    The official Sony response:

    http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158048

    Sony: "According to NPD data, February 2007 showed a 67% increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for SCEA in the US with total sales of $377 million. With this increase, the PlayStation brand remained the number-one revenue driver for the month in the industry owning 38.5% of total sales. On the retail front, SCEA continues to work hard to stabilize supply for PS3 and PS2 across North America. A short month was reflected in PS3 and PSP sales figures over January, while PS2 continues to perform above expectations, down just 4.3% from last year. PS2 dominated software sales for the industry, generating $111 million in revenue.

    Coming off the heels of GDC, there is much enthusiasm for upcoming games and services for PS3. With the announcement of 'HOME' and 'LittleBigPlanet' and the recent release of the much-anticipated 'MotorStorm,' consumer enthusiasm for PS3 continues to build. Excitement for PS2 also remains incredibility strong, helped by the release of 'God of War II' earlier this week, which sold-in more than 1 million units at retail. It was also announced recently that the 'God of War' franchise would soon be heading to PSP."

Sony pushed the envelope and pushed to the market a solidly built and very powerful console, and the price is just too high. But the alternative, budget priced consoles with marginal power gap over the previous generation... ugh, that's a nasty vision of the future of the industry right there.

    Hopefully this shit can be turned around with a price drop and good games.

    I doubt the average consumer has heard of any of that. The only reason I can think of is the price. Even with that, you would think that the hype alone would propel sales for a while.

    I doubt the average consumer has heard of any of that. The only reason I can think of is the price. Even with that, you would think that the hype alone would propel sales for a while.

    Hype is driven by early adopters, who were mostly pissed off. A direct result of all that shit I posted.

    Look at those monster PS3 numbers Threepio's company is pushing throughout Canada. 6 thousand in a MONTH?

    Hey, don't make fun of my future roommate.. he means well.

    Oh I know he does, he just always quantifies every PS3 argument with what his company is doing, or moving, or speculating on, or arranging.

    And by the way, congrats, I had no idea you two were engaged!

    Engaged in heated debate (I lie all the time).

    I do believe PS3 sales will pick up since their well received showing at GDC... it remains to be seen how much momentum there will be, however.

    Wouldn't a general increase in profits around now be a product of two systems launching in the Christmas season, though? I wonder if it's actually representative of a real increase in sales, or just the post-launch bubble.

    A bubble, I would assume.

    Though, the 360 kicked a lot of ass in software sales... so I don't know how that would all balance out. I'm not about to do the maths.

    It's great to see such fantastic growth for our hobby. I know a lot of investors are beginning to perk up and take notice of this industry. My fervent hope is that this will result in a wealthier industry, which may, cross your fingers, begin to trickle down to increase the crap wages of most developers and, thus, inspire more variety, innovation, and inspiration in our games.

    It's a great time to be a gamer!
    Less optimistic take: the extra money will go straight to the publishers, who will only become larger and less creative, and give them more power to strangle out the last drops of true inspiration in our games.

    Don't worry guys. Sony have turned on the hype machine for the Aussie and European launch. With all the advertising dollars they are spending, you would expect them to get a few sales here.

    I mean, here in Australia, even the *news* is telling us we need a PS3. Sony haven't just bought commercial spots, they've bought segments in the news.

    Australia won't affect their overall figures too much, since we've got a smaller population than Texas. But if they've done the same thing in Europe, then they might actually have a decent PAL launch.
