Does anybody have any suggestions for how to make a giant candy cane staff? I'd like something thicker than standard PVC pipe so it'd actually look like a giant candy cane in scale, rather than being too skinny. (I'm also on a budget... so it can't get too expensive.)

If nothing else, I may end up buying a cane - but that's kind of a last resort.

Well, I'm currently planning on making a semi-functional staff for my boyfriend's White Mage costume using PVC pipe and spray insulation foam. To get a rounded/shepherd hook top, I'm going to use one of those tubey-whirly-noise makers (found mine at the Dollar Tree) and use a coat hanger to shape it. For me, I'm using the spray foam all over and then carving it to look like wood before hardening and painting, but you could leave the PVC pipe base alone and just do the hook to even out the toy's ridges. Or skip the foam and use paper mache?

Edit: Or follow this awesome guide. Now I'm rethinking my whirly toys....

Just a quick tip if you weren't already aware: you can easily bend PVC pipe by heating it over a standard stove until it becomes soft, and if you do it slowly, you can get a really nice curve. When it cools, it'll be extremely sturdy. I use this method for making the base of all of my wings and curved weapons ^^
Have you done it with larger PVC? And when you say "over the stove" does an electric stove work?

I'm in the middle of finals atm - but on Friday I was thinking I'd go down to the hardware store and check it out.

I'm planning on going as Eliza, one of the DLC Skullgirls and I have a friend flying up who will be Squiggly. We have never been to PAX before so we're both very excited to meet everyone! Any other Skullgirls or fighting game cosplayers who want to meet up and take some fun pictures?

I've had the most success with 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch, but I've bent 1 1/2-inch as well (it just flattens a bit because the diameter is so large). I use an electric stove - hold it about three or four inches away on medium heat for a few minutes, rotating constantly, and it should go 'limp' enough to manipulate easily. Hadn't had trouble with fumes, although I would probably keep a window open nearby :)

I was halfway into making my Bioshock's Elizabeth cosplay (her first outfit), when all of a sudden the trailer for the Burial at Sea DLC comes out! I love her look in that DLC, and I quickly shifted gears and am now making that cosplay. :) I might try to make her first outfit too, as much as I'd love to cosplay other things, just because I have all of the materials for it.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if we get to see a Burial at Sea Booker, with how little we've seen of him from the trailer. Leaves more to the imagination at least.

Not sure if this would be completely possible with the different hairstyle lengths, but if you had both outfits on different days it would be most impressive. That said, I hope you're able to finish either one in time for PAX!

PAX is definitely not 100% video game cosplay.

You got that right! I've been a fat cartoon character/fat football fan for the last 3 years and the reception has been more than rad! (I suppose one could count those Flash-based platformers that Adult Swim has put on their website over the years, but I still wouldn't call Carl a video game character.) My larger point is that 'video game relativity'... not that big-a-deal.

I am cosplaying as Lara Croft and I want to make her bow & arrows. I read the FAQs and will make sure the set-up is nonfunctional. The arrows will only be the fletched part and they will be sewn in to the quiver. The bow will be steam-bent so it won't be under any tension and the bowstring will be slightly loose.

Will this be a problem? Any help is greatly appreciated! Below is a reference photo for the type of bow I'm going after.

I thought about that. Luckily, there is an awesome wig shop by my house that has a wig that fits both outfits! (My hair is a lot like her 1st outfit, it would juts need to be dyed a darker shade, but doesn't like to sit in the ponytail she has. The wig does it better.)

Also, thanks! So far, so good. The Burial at Sea outfit is surprisingly super easy to make (personally), although I'm nervous about the bottom half of her outfit. I know what the skirt looks like, but the shoes.... I'm just going to wear the exact same see-through black tights + boots as her other two outfits. Unless they show more about the DLC between now and the end of the month, in which I'll look around like crazy if the shoes are completely different.

WOO! So I've finalized my cosplay plans (but don't know which days I'm wearing what yet)

I'm super close to being done with FemShep - just some small details and I have to finish painting my gun
I have a few accessories to finish for Gaige (wig styling, some stuff that she hangs from her belts, and a black sleeve to go under the mech-arm)
And as a last minute, super easy costume, I'm doing Louise Belcher on (probably) Monday, with a friend who's going as Tina Belcher.

I only have a few things left to do, but it still seems like a lot, since I'm also moving to a new house sometime in the next week and a half. YAY CRAP TO DO!

So my plans have slightly changed for costumes. I was in a car accident so sewing is not really an option anymore. So few of my friends and I will be doing Firefly (gender bending, look for Mal/Inara/River), Doctor Who (gender bending, 11th/River/Donna), and my Moogle. There will be two Moogles this year, got my best friend in the gray/purple Moogle costume. I have few things left to finish, but I have some people helping me with that. That is the plan so far, it might be little off for me this year since I will probably be in a wheel chair. So come find me, I want lots of photos of different costumes.

@KellyShepard087 You're at an advantage with the casual cosplay since you'll likely be more comfortable walking around PAX all day. The renegade scars are a nice touch. I know nothing about makeup, but is there any way for you to make the scars glow? That would look fantastic.

@embraceternity It looks like Irrational Games wants to give you a helping hand! By request, they've released pictures of the new Elizabeth outfit.

@Zombicus, the scars are made using nail polish and a cover sick, so making them glow isn't really something I can think of. I'm hopeful the camera flashes will reflect off the glitter in the polish. But either way, they are pretty rad.

This will be my first year cosplaying! Very exciting! I'll be going as an Engineer from TF2. I've got the shirt made, shoes, hat, and goggles, which leaves the overalls, wrench, and gloves which are all in progress! I'd show pictures, but it's too rough-looking right now.

Hey! I've been trying to round up TF2 people here! https://www.facebook.com/groups/472547109476922/

My boyfriend and I have finally gotten started on our outfits, and have decided on a RED Medic and femHeavy. It'll be mostly slightly-edited thrift shop stuff, so a pretty casual cosplay, but our friends were going to be pretty upset if we showed up to PAX without a costume.
I've also grabbed a few things for a Triana Orpheus cosplay, started back before my boyfriend got his butt in gear and I needed something easy. Found out MAC still carries her color, so I'll probably do her, too, even though she's not even a current character any more.

To quote your username, Subarashii! That looks AWESOME! \^o^/
Also, I am looking forward to doing a picture! Though, I've never gotten together with people on the fly for pics before, it's usually a group that has a time booked with like 25 people or something. How should we swing this? I'm pretty flexible. Which day are you wearing Amy?

    As an aside...
Are there any male cosplayers here who work with/on making armor?? If so, please PM me. There may be a cool opportunity (non-monetary) for you. Can't post deets in here. Thanks!
