Thanks for your advice and tips as always acadia! I tried to focus more to get the proportions, I think it's much better and....a little wider? The eyes and the jawline always get me, they always seem to be much bigger and wider than the picture is. The spacing technique you shared made it easier for me to gauge though. Gonna try to use this as a base to try to paint values but I have to come back and see later since it will probably look really different with fresh eyes

Wanted to draw some rocky rocks today, after sketching I tried to do some values limited to 3 tones except for the clouds, also tried adding some textures to another layer in the end. Overall I guess this is super messy looking lol

edit: Erased the cloud lines and the background lines, think it looks slightly cleaner now

Tried to sketch a photo I found on pinterest of a girl who seems to be really popular for artists to draw
One thing I noticed is that I have no idea how to deal with soft transitions using lines

edit: Tried to paint using the previous drawing, did a clipping mask on top and then tried to gradually reduce the opacity of the line as I paint until it fades away

I am not even half way there. how does the leg not explode from cramming in so many muscles

I have to draw the skeleton portion as a base layer for future stuff because I would go insane if I have to redraw it everytime I want to learn about muscles

Not sure about posting the ref img since it's more naked than usual
    gyb7zklv3dd9.png

One thing I am not sure is if it's better to invest time in doing a single drawing or multiple ones with less quality for learning purposes. It's hard to tell but everything I posted in here recently usually took me more than 5 hours so I don't have much time left to study anything else

I think quality is more important than quantity. At least in terms of observing things and trying to understand them. Also, try to mix in some drawings where you try to APPLY what you've been studying. It should help you figure out where the gaps in your knowledge are, and what to study next.

Over all, super good work in here. Keep it up!!

Just you wait until you have to cast shadows of spheres and cylinders.

Just you wait until you have to cast shadows onto spheres and cylinders.

What a pain in the butt.

Doing that all free hand is some solid arm training, but I'd recommend doing a couple with rulers or line tools to get some nice clean results.

When you're doing sphere and cylinder projections, I'd also recommend using ellipse guides or warped circle paths to keep yourself sane.

Robertson has a weird robot arm, but even he uses circles guides, ellipse guides, french curves, and little cut out masks for his final drawings and renderings.

Hey folks been a while, still working on cast shadows and all sorts of stuff, but progress have been slow on all fronts unfortunately. Didn't post them in here because they were really ugly and more unfinished than usual, also really boring to look at

Figure drawing using photos for today:
    45ix6ql6d1ib.png

Lines wise I know I am being stubborn on not using guides but my lines are still so shitty despite practicing almost everyday, I am worried that I will get even worse once I start using them

Cast shadow practice, tried to clean it up and assign some values before posting this time.

Sunlight, shadow direction pointing to the right
I varied the light angle a little for each object though. The figure at the back was too much for me so I left it out, think I will try to redraw that and figure it out later

Tried to do the cast shadow of a structure I gave up a couple of days ago, I realized that I wasted a ton of time and effort on unnecessary construction lines which's made things more complicated and confusing than it has to be. Really impressed by the folks who could do these kind of stuff in a single layer or even in their head.

    Blender 2.8 Beginner Tutorial - Part 1: Introduction 5:32

    ojvjsc6nh49z.png

Been dabbling with Blender to see if I can get decent with it enough to use it as a tool to further my understanding of fundamentals. The above image were made by following instructions from the course. If I have to start from scratch I don't think I can still pull it off without any guidance, but it's a start I suppose.

As of now I think the hardest stuff to wrap my mind around would be the unwrapping and the nodes

Gonna try out the new donut tutorial next

Part 6, Level 4: Compiling the Final Video - Blender Beginner Tutorial completed!
    njt7img8bi8a.png
    ucxcttt6c3w8.gif

I thought I have a relatively beefy laptop but it barely made it through the glass portion of the donut tutorial, so much slowdowns as well as crashes.
Still I am pretty happy to have actually made it all the way to the end. Not sure where to go from here, I am definitely much more familiar with the ui and shortcuts now but like before, if you ask me to just make something without any help, I probably wouldn't be able to pull it off.

edit: Thinking about it more, I guess I want to use 3d to understand more about lighting and constructing an environment to help with creating illustrations. Like if I draw a character, I want to be able to be confident enough to know what is actually going on from the light to the background instead of doing the pikachu :o face

Blender Beginner Modelling Tutorial - Part 1 17:57

    440tdtmvypfg.png
Cleared another tutorial from Blender Guru. This one was definitely more specific and dry in terms of scope. Learning how to set up a simple studio lighting at the end was really fun though.

That said, I should probably draw something in between learning 3d just so I don't forget how to do them again. I really admire the folks who can manage to do so much and then some at the same time
