Well yes. We all knew this. This is why everyone's buying the GBA version, because we all like fun[i/].
And on that note, after another un-sucessful trip(it appears none of the big box stores in my city are stocking new GBA games, either that, or just not this one) I ordered off amazon.ca today, should be here by wednesday next week. I dunno if I can wait that long.
I hate to be predictable, but having just beaten the first level and made some headway into the second, I'm really not seeing what's so great about this game.
I mean, so far I've noted:
- A dearth of attacks/moves (which could've been alleviated by relegating the "Family Combo" thing to the Select button, freeing up the L and R buttons for something more useful)
- A dearth of enemy variety. There are exactly four types of enemies in the first level, not counting the boss: Regular gang members [with two palettes], Bat-wielding gang members, dobermans (which die in one hit), and motorcycle gang members. Come to think of it, I think Streets of Rage 2's (one of my favorite Genesis games) first level had only three types of enemies (not counting the boss and subbosses), but they had a wider range of behavior. Similarly, so far the second level only has the same Foot Clan soldiers. Not even different-colored Foot Clan soldiers. Well, I think there may be some off-whites in there with the light-grays.
- Little differentiation between characters. Leonardo and Raphael are essentially the same sprite, only with slightly altered weapons and a recolored headband. Donatello and Michaelangelo are somewhat different, but nonetheless, they have all the same kinds of attacks.
I'm not saying it's a terrible game, mind. I'm just saying it's rather average to me. At this point, I'm wondering if part of the reason it got such great reviews isn't because it's a GBA movie tie-in, which makes the fact that it isn't complete dogshit a source of wonder.
Eh. It's not as good as, say Double Dragon Advance, but it's better than a lot of other side-scrolling beat 'em ups on the Game Boy Advance. The animation is smooth and dynamic, and the fighting action (although lacking in variety as you pointed out) is quite solid. Part of the challenge comes from trying to keep the combos alive... the larger your combo is, the more experience points you'll get for it, and it's extremely difficult to get into double digits for the big points.
I got a combo of 36 in the 3rd level. I think one part of it involved kicking a guy behind me into a stool. That was pretty awesome.

I've gotten through the first two levels so far, and played a bit of the third.
There are more than 2 types of foot soldiers in the second level, I don't know where you are getting that from.
Abilities can be upgraded throughout the game, so while the fighting seems limited now, it expands later as you learn new skills. For example, I've got Leonardo doing a roll attack and Raphael learned a wall jumping move.
The number of enemies the game throws at you, all at once, is pretty crazy for a GBA game. Towards the end of the second level a whole damn hoard of foot soldiers are let loose on you.
The boss battles, though I have only experienced 2 so far, have been varied enough to be interesting yet not overwhelmingly difficult.
So... yeah.. Play the game some more before you start with your dearth-calling.
Despite the special place we have in our hearts for TMNT Arcade and TMNT Turtles in Time, this game is a definite improvement on the formula. Just needs multiplayer!
Am I missing something about the "calling in another turtle" special attacks? The game says that when your family bond with a turtle reaches level 3, a super move becomes available, but it just seems like they stay longer on the screen but are otherwise normal.
For the super the bond needs to be 3, you need a brotherhood medallion, and I think you press L and R at the same time.
Also guys, this game is criminally short. It's only 7 stages and I'm already at stage 6. I guess to up the playtime I'll need to play on hard and try to get every trophy.
I liked it a lot. Definitely the best movie out of the three (the original third one was such a joke it just doesn't count). As many people have said, the "main" story is weak. Blah blah blah monsters blah blah blah 3000 years! blah blah blah. But the real story of a family broken is really well done. It's similar to what happened in the first movie, but in this one it's handled better, as are the characters. Leo and Raph's characters are very well fleshed out in this. Unfortunately Donny and Mikey aren't seen as much as in the other movies, but even their characters are fleshed out better than in the original movies. Whenever they are shown they're not just cracking one liners and catchphrases. They actually act like they're being affected by what's going on with Leo and Raph. Donny in the "I don't want to get involved, but really, come-on guys!" way, and Mikey in the "little brother who hates to see his bigger brothers fight" way (I actually like the idea of Mikey being the youngest brother. It gives a reason for his ADD)
And the Leo vs Raph fight was absolutely beautifully done, especially if you consider that this is an upstart animation studio in Hong Kong.
As far as the look of the movie goes, I thought it was very well done. I've been an animation student for 2 years and have seen a lot of crap animation and character models, and these weren't crap. Instead of going for a realistic look for the human characters they went for an "The Incredibles" look, which I thought worked, which is a surprise considering the very very realistically modeled New York. Remove the characters, and the backgrounds looked damn near photo realistic. As for the turtles themselves, they look different, but the models are not without detail and are designed well. As for whether or not you like them, it's not a quality thing, just a personal preference thing.
Which moves on to the animation portion of it. Skin moves over bones and muscles. Muscles flex realistically. Faces show emotion and thought behind the eyes, more than animatronics ever could in the early 90's (no offense to the Jim Henson Company. I love their stuff). And the fight scenes, oh god the fight scenes.
I don't know if anyone here knows anything about the animation house that did the movie, but they're an upstart based in Hong Kong. Apparently (according to interviews) they're big fans of Hong Kong Cinema. Well, it really shows in the fight scenes. Things look like they really hurt in this. The Turtles are actually nimble in this. They're fast, flexible, and fight like they actually know Ninjitsu. It really is well shown off in the spoilered fight scene above.
Seriously, if you were a fan of the old movies, go see this. If you liked the new cartoon (pre Fast Forward) go see this. And if you liked the 80's show and nothing else, kill yourself. This movie is awesome.
I saw the movie a few hours ago and I thought it was really good but my main complaint was
Karai. Man, everything about her in the movie was below par. I thought her voice actress was bad right off the bat but my main problem was she never really did anything. She fought Leo for like 20 seconds, retreated, and that was the most we ever saw her do again. Karai would also not have fallen for something as dumb as a Casey Jones distraction by wearing a big turtle mask. It seems like she had some stuff going on in the huge outdoor fight but it might have gotten cut. You see her fighting April but only for about 2 seconds before she's knocked away. However, I liked her foot soldier buddy that was in the van with her.
Otherwise the movie was totally awesome. Oh also, I demand a wallpaper of
Leo and Raph on the building right before they fight and you just see them in their fighting stances. That was the coolest shot in the whole movie to lead up to the coolest fight in the whole movie.

I think the brotherhood medallion is something different, because I can do it if I have a medallion even if my bond level is only at 1 or 2.
Yeah, but it was revealed shortly after that Shredder was an Utrom in a suit, so I don't know if that really counts...
You didn't know it when it happened, though, unless you watched the eps horribly out of order.
Seeing Shredder get up, walk over, and pick up his head just set the pace for later stories all the better, making you kind of wonder "just what the hell IS this guy?"
Was shredder always an alien in a suit? Wasn't he just a super-ninja in the E&L comics?
Not even a super-ninja, really. Turtles beat him first time out, and gave him the option of an honorable death through seppuku (sp), but he opted for a grenade instead to kill everyone on the rooftop, and he fell off, and boom.
Shredder, really, is pretty fucking over-glorified. But at least the recent toon made it well worthwhile.
Not as far as I know; they even changed the full backstory behind Yoshii vs. the Oroko clan, and instead turned it into Yoshii being some kind of agent for the good-guy Utroms...basically, in a series that did a lot right, they simply fucked up one of my favorite parts of the Turtles universe, and that's always left a bad taste in my mouth.
Shredder is the same throughout, until Karai takes up the mantle.
And I liked the new background, it sort of tied things together more tightly.
Last night I had to resist the temptation to buy at least 2 versions of the TMNT game, and it didn't help that as I was looking at the GBA and Wii games, I also spied with my little eye the 4th season of the original cartoon. I imagined that when I was 6 years old, this is what heaven must have sounded like to me. That said, I decided to play it wise and rent the Wii game tonight after I see the movie.
Otherwise the movie was totally awesome. Oh also, I demand a wallpaper of

Never have I wanted a widescreen monitor so badly. That is so cool. Thanks for the earlier wallpaper though. It was truly the only replacement greater than Rob and Elliot's mustache fight.
Edit: Maximum Zero if you can get that picture in 1280x1024, I would love you forever. I like the earlier one but it would be even better without the borders at the top and bottom of the 2 characters.
Well I've just been doing elegant cropping and stretching rather than the hideous characters above and below, but I was thinking of trying to replace the background in that image to see what I can come with. Give me a bit 'o time to see what I can do.
Lemme show you the gist of my idea before I go wasting time on it:
Basically imagine this with the edges around Leo and Raph cleaned up, the background perhaps blurred a bit more, perhaps a bit darker, and with a rain effect on top of the entire thing.
It looks nice and I'm assuming you're going to change the color of the ground near Leo since in the original picture the sign is lighting up the ground near him while for Raph it isn't. Other than that, I don't have anything to really add because I'm no good at anything involving editing or pictures. I'd like for them to be a little father apart but since it's a window in a window, I assume the distance will expand in the final version. It seems like it would've been a lot less work if they just hadn't had a neon sign in the background.

On the ground thing: Of course. Also, they're so close because I wanted to leave them at Full Resolution. Once I clean up the edges around the characters I can shrink 'em down a bit and space them however you like.
However, It's late so I'll be finishing this all up tomorrow.
A shame that my resolution is essentially locked at 1680x1050 due to the LCD. Stuff like that just doesn't look right centered in the middle with a gray border. Stretching just ruins the picture. Best I could do was resize the one that had Leo's and Raph's headshots on the top and bottom and slightly stretch it horizontally.
The Wolfman on
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Well I beat it on normal mode. That last stage is pretty brutal. Land mines in the middle of the screen with 2 shuriken throwing robots and 2 normal robot baddies? Yikes. The other robot guys in the level are also what I consider a broken enemy. Unless you jump or hold up or something and get away immediately after getting up, they'll just endless combo you to death. I'm also almost positive you need the wall-jump ability in that level, just because you'll get mobbed so much that you need an escape. Fun stage though. Also, I recommend everyone keeps Raphael's speed at 2 and use him for stage 6. You do NOT want to be able to roll in 2 sections of that stage because it's basically instant death. Overall, great game but I'm sad it's so short.
One thing though about the ending......
It says Casey asked April to marry him? Uhhhhh did I miss that in the movie? Because I'm pretty sure that...... you know, didn't happen.
The console game was retardedly easy, and short. I normally never have patience with games (and am not overly great at them) but I completely SAILED through it. Definitely worth a rent but really not worth buying.
Oh and the "boss" characters are far far too easy.

Hey, he's one of THE aliens of TMNT lore, and the ones that inspired Krang from the old toon to boot.
Overall, it was actually pretty good writing, Laird was actually in on this one, unlike the old toy commercial toon.
That was awesome. In fact, there was even an ep that was cut out along those lines...
Shredder is the same throughout, until Karai takes up the mantle.

What about the maggot-revived Cyber Shredder?
And I wish the fucking Ninja Tribunal arc would come out here on DVD already. Other parts of the world not only get it aired, but on DVD as well? WTF?
Man, would've coincided with the movie well, too.
Speaking of which, saw it yesterday, and loved it.
Pity the console game sounds so lacking. Nintendo Power gave the Wii game a 5.0.
...out of 10.
