All of asia is now in panic, and I am pretty sure this is the beginning of the end. But goddang it, I'm going to see this one through to the (inevitably) bitter end.
I'm starting to wonder if going classic on my first run was a good idea. I think I've got a handle on it now. But seeing where all the tech trees have gone and knowing the importance of getting satellites up may would have really helped with the current strategic layer pickle that I'm in.
Yeah, my first Classic run I was a bit lost in the strategic layer. I realized about halfway through that satellites are the single most important thing you should be pumping all your money into, followed by laser weapons.
I know its probably not a popular perk, but I love that gunslinger one on the sniper. Blasting floaters with the pistol is awesome
My current sniper uses it, but she's built to be a much more mobile sniper than my first (sadly killed while moving up to support the assault of a chain restaurant by a muton after over 28 kills, we mourn you Loki). She also went for the move-and-fire perk instead of squad sight and has made quite good use of it as a mobile overwatch for the team's advances.
Also, the two best soldiers on my team are two Supports. One, "Bonus", is setup as a medic but she has the most kills on the team thanks to overwatch, while the other, "Prophet", is set as a fast flanker and forward scout/smoke dispenser for my Assaults, and she has the second most. Might help that my first 2 assaults died while they had held those records.
My best team setup (for when things go really bad) are those two supports, two assaults, a sniper and a heavy (the survivor of Delta, still alive thanks to his role in the back of the pack). A rookie or two often replaces an assault and the forward support, as those are the injury prone ones in that setup, but going in slow and steady with overlapping fields of fire and an overwatch base have handled most missions without too much fuss.

This is a huge factor in why my current classic game is pretty screwed. Next time, satellites will receive at least 80% of my total funding.

So you're doing/have done that 2K event thing @Aegeri? Any hot insights if so?
Actually it was surprisingly hands off from 2k except a quick thanks for coming thing. I just picked up a controller and just played the game for like, 3 hours straigh until someone asked if they could play - unfortunately at a terror mission. A lot of people there were Australian gaming press picking up review copies and similar, so I didnt interact with the reps from 2k much. I did talk to some of my friends and people I know from the official forums though, but no developer types or similar.
I had tons of fun though and most of my ideas I had formulated from watching streams and similar worked out. Really wish I had a crack at that terror mission though, but I did use that console for like 3 hours so I can hardly complain. Oddly enough there were nearly always consoles free to play over the whole evening around me, seems many came to chat to the reps, get a review copy and get drunk.

Don't forget that you need money to build Satellite Uplinks, too! I had my third satellite sitting in storage for almost two months because I didn't have the cash to talk to it.
I went to play XCOM the other night... was so excited, ready to play, had about an hour before bed to get it going.... and my graphics card died. Its not even a year old. F'in 6970, it sucked even when it was new. Hopefully I get a 7000 series card as a replacement but really all I want is to play XCom.

IRT loadout (un)equiping: are you all sure that you have to manually un-equip stuff from wounded soldiers to redistribute to a new squad? Because I could have sworn that I only ever built six of whatever item I wanted (for a full squad), and no matter how many came back wounded from an op, I could always equip those items to new soldiers without un-equipping them from the out-of-commission members.
However, I am very open the idea that I'm very mistaken and delusional. The game does that to you.

Yeah I don't remember that being an issue either, when my support was injured I had my medkit available to equip on any of my active doods that I wanted. I only built one so it couldn't have come from anywhere else.
But again, I was rushing through things in many ways to get as much XCOM in as possible. I only gave one soldier a ridiculous haircut and name!

That pistol perk and a laser pistol makes a sniper about as good as a shotgun indoors and with better accuracy. I think the elevation perk is a bit overrated, I wont be taking it on my second time around on Friday.
I feel like that elevation perk is only really worth it if you have access to the skeleton suit or archangel armor. And then you can use elevated areas on your own terms. The pistol on the other hand is pretty much always useful
Sats also take a huge time investment, but they're hugely important. Half my damned base is dedicated to them, and I try to launch 2-3 a month.
Taking 200 credit missions early on helps a BUNCH with getting coverage up and running.
You can't skimp out on Engineers either though.
Yup. I use sats to get more, and take engineers when I can afford it. At an early tipping point the monthly income from sat coverage makes the 200 credit missions less useful. Also, easy council purchase orders are nice. (give me a sat! = dick request. Give me 4 plasma pistols for $900! = awesome request.)
I think I only needed one workshop to get my sat coverage rolling. I lucked out and had an easy thermal though, which helped my power generation immensely.

Yes: base bonuses go vertically as well.
And I find the height advantage stuff to be meh. It's awesome when you have a map that you can use it on, but a good 80% of the time there's either no high ground, or it's got shit line of sight.

I think wounded soldiers are relieved of their gear when they get back to base. However, soldiers who are still on active duty but haven't been chosen for the mission will stubbornly cling to their toys until ordered to give them up.

ah ok, that makes more sense.
I suppose my casualty rate on my ops were high enough where that hadn't turned up as an issue.
Wow, everything is SO MUCH EASIER with laser weapons. In my first game, I didn't get laser rifles until way late. I just roflstomped the first chryssalids that showed up because 3 of my squad had laser rifles on them.
Question, how does smoke work? I assumed it applied a defensive bonus to any shots fired through it. However, with the perk of making your smoke apply an increased defensive bonus and range of effect, it now seems like it may be just shots fired at anyone IN the smoke. If so, how can I properly utilize smoke to advance on the enemy?
Also what is the best way to counter overwatch. I know dashing reduces the chance to hit on it, but I dont like putting my soldiers at the whim of the RNG.
Is there any way to flank an overwatch? I once lost a soldier who was coming up BEHIND the overwatch, and since then, I have been afraid of it. I know assaults can eventually counter it effectively, but if you dont have a soldier with that perk, what do you usually do about it? Smoke would work decently depending on how it works. But if you have to be IN the smoke to get a bonus, that sort of would make it useless against overwatch.

I made this mistake too: Why yes, I would love to send a sat down to South Africa for the easiest money I've ever made. What's that? I dont have enough engineers to build another uplink and I dont have enough money to build a workshop? PISS!

In my experience, the best way to counter an overwatch is to get bait to move along the alien's line of fire at an angle where they are unlikely to be hit. Then once it's spent, you move in for the kill.

Smoke only applies to people inside it. It gives them + 20 defense.
Just throw it where you guys are going to be and then get in cover inside the smoke.
For overwatch, the only "counter" it has is dashing. When you dash, the overwatch user gets an additional penalty to hit.
The only place where I've had trouble with loadouts has been when troopers are away on psi-ops training. It takes 10 days and they don't seem to relinquish any gear when you put them in the program, so you have to remember to unequip them first if they're carrying something you might need.
Battle report from the front lines of Classic Ironman, immediately after my first terror mission:
Captain 'Android' @Woodroez, my super star assault, is currently wounded for 17 days. He has 20 kills in 7 mission, hoo-rah!
Sergeant 'Sledge' @CoJoeTheLawyer, a heavy class, is gravely wounded for 16 days. 10 kills in 5 missions, mostly by blowing things up.
Squaddie @P10, one of my new supports, is wounded for 5 days. 2 kills in 1 mission.
Lieutenant 'Alpha' @Grimmytoa has 7 kills in 5 missions. Being a sniper, I'm surprised he has lasted this long. My snipers usually die.
Corporal @Dashui, another support, has 4 kills in 2 missions. Rising in the ranks!
Squaddie @Operative21 is a newly promoted sniper, with 2 kills in 1 mission.
Squaddie @Disoriented Fox has 1 kill in 2 missions and just got out of sick bay. Boooooo!
Squaddie @Akajaybay has 3 kills in 1 mission, awesome! Another heavy.
@Inksplat and @Frei both bit the dust, both Squaddies. Sad times

My Startegic game is not going quite as well as my tactical game.
I've currently lost 3 countries; Japan, Brazil, Egypt. Luckily I've managed to bring the panic of the other nations down considerably.
I've begun to aggressively expand my SAT surveillance of Asia and Africa.
Argentina is two away from Mass Hysteria, but I cannot afford (or really justify) setting up SATs there anytime soon. I may have to let that one go.
North America is, oddly enough, sitting pretty. I have zero SATs over there and have done maybe two missions there. Despite my lack of intervention Canada, the United States, and Mexico all sit at 1 on the panic meter. Very strange.
I am in dire need of better interceptors.
I've just built the Psionics Lab, so we'll see how that plays out.
Currently trying to upgrade all my weapons to Plasma and then get Titan armor. Though the Titan armor project may have to be put on hold until my interceptors are up to snuff.
And I am now routinely seeing Sectoid Commanders at crash/landing sites. Luckily "Run & Gun" combined with a face full of shotgun remedies that problem, but I have to be quick about it. Which is where a Sniper's "Motion Tracker" ability comes in real handy.
All in all I am not doing to bad. If everything stays solid I'll probably be taking the fight to the alien's front door before the end of the year. Then Japan, Egypt, and Brazil will have a lot to answer for. :P
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
So smoke only applies to those in. So its a defensive manuever, less of an offensive-advance one. That seems fair. Means the times I threw smoke ON the enemy to blind his line of fire was a BIG mistake
Wonder how it works in reagrds to overwatch. Would it apply if the soldier started in the smoke, ends in the smoke, happens to be in the smoke when the alien reacts, or just not at all.
I guess Ill have to dash and draw fire when getting over-watched. Potentially with a high ranked solider so the risk of him or her actually dying are low.
Question about "elevation". I try to get my snipers up high. And while this often leads to them raping. It also often leads to them getting raped. I know there is a bonus to hit against enemies at a lower elevation. But is there a penalty for shooting up? Basically, most buildings only have "half" cover, which leads my soldiers to get shot from all sides/angles.
Basically half cover is pretty useless from what Ive seen, so I struggle to keep high ground without getting lit up.
Has anyone tried ignoring laser weapons and rushing the "Arc-thrower + capture some fools" line of research to skip straight to plasma pistols? I think I'm gonna try it on Attempt #3 tonight.
If you take Damn Good Ground, you'll get a +10 to defense when you have the high ground. Personally I've been finding gunslinger more useful, but I tend to be a bit more mobile with my snipers. One of the higher rank Sniper abilities lets you treat half cover as full cover, as well.
Has anyone tried ignoring laser weapons and rushing the "Arc-thrower + capture some fools" line of research to skip straight to plasma pistols? I think I'm gonna try it on Attempt #3 tonight.
I have been doing this. Only time will tell if this is genius or folly.
Black lives matter.

Also good advice regarding Sats is to probably wait until after your first Engineer mission to purchase one, because that drops the cost from 100 to 77. Not insignificant early game.

CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
I think wounded soldiers are relieved of their gear when they get back to base. However, soldiers who are still on active duty but haven't been chosen for the mission will stubbornly cling to their toys until ordered to give them up.
I suppose my casualty rate on my ops were high enough where that hadn't turned up as an issue.
[Edit] I am also curious about smoke.
Sad times

I have been doing this. Only time will tell if this is genius or folly.
