For me, at least, there is a difference between "HERE'S A FANCY HAT!" and "Here's a much higher level of customization than a regular purchaser will get." A hat is not the same as being able to have nearly twice as much fun in "barbie dress up" mode. In fact, it's a little silly to try and compare the two.

It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the game, but it's dumb and any defense of it is also dumb. In my eyes you will never convince me that disabling customization for non-pre-order customers is good business. So i've seen pictures where people have different coloured armour. Not just carapace/titan armour but various other colours. Is that in multiplayer only because I don't have such an option. (on pc)

    Preorder-only stuff, I believe.

Does the base game not get any color tinting options?

@anon the felon What armor is that your Assault has? Is it Titan or something else?

Yeah Titan armor. I think it was a poor move to make armor color/helmets pre-order. They should release that pack ASAP. "Pre-order bonuses" are dumb and need to quit being a thing.

That's weird, because Titan armor on my Assaults don't have shoulderpads like yours does. It's a smooth shoulderless suit like what's on your Sniper and Support.

Actually the customization options are.. less than I thought they would be when they were hyping it.

It amounts to a second look for some (not all) of the armor types, and overall armor tints, which sometimes don't play nice with the default armor tints, either.

The pre-order thing was one different type of armour look, and that becomes irrelevant once you research carapace armour or better because they force their own look anyway. Also the pre-order colours are garish neon colours so you're not missing much.

Which is my entire complaint. It's an example of bad pre-order stuff. It's totally binary, and not "5 more shades". I'm sure it will get released as DLC...just dumb.

My ironman classic run is going very well, and yet very poorly at the same time. I'm still alive in September, but I basically want to lose at this point. I made some mistakes early on which might still end up costing me the game, and I want to get my inevitable defeat over with and start fresh with a clean slate. I still haven't captured an Outsider, and I'm also still running carapace armor due to lack of alloys. My research has stalled for the same reason. I've researched firestorms but can't build any yet (alloy...), and its my lack of interception capability that's really killing me at this point. I have plasma cannons but only one actually built, my other 3 interceptors are using lasers. Next UFO I see I'm going to have to go balls-out on the boosts and hope for the best.

Fortunately, I'm only one bar on the doom counter from losing and have two countries one tick away from panic; so if I lose any non-ufo mission I'm pretty much fucked at this point. On top of that, I haven't met Ethereals, Sectoid Commanders, Sectopods or Muton elites yet, so I'm confident the game will find a way to legitimately beat me. Come at me bro!

Unless there is some mechanic in the game that I have never seen before, my game just bugged out in a way that will completely fuck me over in the long run.

I had started building Satellites very late this month, and they were set to be completed less than a day before the council report. That was fine though, because I even did a test run where I ignored all the missions just to see that they would be completed in time and then loaded back.

Except now that I finish the last mission of the month, their order in the queue somehow got switched. My satellites are currently set to be completed a couple of hours after the council report (where three nations are set to leave the council) instead of the 12 or so hours before that they previously were.

So that sucks. Time to look for some kind of way to edit my save file to restore my campaign.

Edit: The only explanation I can see would be that engineering projects are paused while you are flying with the skyranger. I am tempted to replay the mission and see if it ends up the same way, but it is a really tough terror mission that took a lot of skill and luck to get through without any deaths so I would rather not (hooray for a warehouse with 10 civilians and 6 chryssalids inside).

It's based on equipped weapon. Rifles gives the shoulder pads with the appropriate glow for weapon tech level, shotguns or the alloy cannon give the one shoulder look.

Oh also, what size UFO can I expect to shoot down with a plasma-armed interceptor? Can I expect to shoot down a large one with some boosts thrown in? What about with lasers? I'm assuming the "Very Large" one I've seen floating around is going to take a fully kitted out Firestorm.

so I'm halfway through september on my classic ironman, still trudging along confidently towards taking down the UFO with the gollop chamber device even though the fifth and sixth slots on my squad have an alarming turnover rate, and I get my first asset recovery mission thus far in all my playthroughs. oh man, they're been holding this one back to clobber me with...

twelve thin men and nothing else later, I have panic reduction and a new major heavy for my troubles. while I'm sure this was just to lull me into a false sense of security, I respect the game all the more for suckering me in to continue watching xcom mans die to muton elites.

Awesome, now its just a question of luck I guess. If I detect a UFO I can shoot down over Europe I'm fine (plasma), if its over the U.S or Africa I might have problems. If I get a couple of very large ones it might be game-over.

The multiplayer in this game is so much fun. I love how quickly the matches go by. I'm definitely interested in a PA in-house tournament... maybe interested enough to set one up over this weekend. Would folks want to play in that? It'd be a series of Best of 3, I imagine.

So, after a number of aborted Classic Ironman runs, I've finally got one going my way!

    qrLNH.jpg

I'm in mid September, my last death in June when I lost a Captain to a tank I hadn't realised was on fire :P 6 Colonels, two with max psi powers. Plasma weapons, titan/ghost armour, 5 EMP Firestorms and most importantly a 12+ roster to do missions should my main team take a beating (this is what cost me my last run). Just about to hit the first Ethereal UFO, feeling pretty good about this one.

The point of taking ITZ on your sniper is so your heavy blows up all of the aliens cover with a rocket and your sniper then 1 shots 3 of them in a single overwatch.

Not taking SS also cripples your ability to actually snipe. A sniper without SS can only shoot as far as he can see, which is about 13 tiles. The range of the sniper rifle far exceeds 13 tiles though, it seems to be at least 40-50 tiles if it even has a limit at all. It's crazy to give up that much range. I can see someone wanting a front line 'scout' and taking it, but I don't know why you'd do that when the assault class can be better skilled to do that job.

Assault class is amazing at any rate, taking one down the right side for something like +60% crit chance and +5 crit damage, with the best shotgun you can find and rapid fire, you can one shot basically anything you can run next to.

Looking at the game files, most weapons have a range value of 27, shotguns have a value of 10, most grenades 15 except for alien grenades which have a range of 17, medikits and combat stims 3, and all snipers plus the blaster launcher are 100. Strangely, arc throwers have a value of 27, but there's probably a flag that modifies it to melee range.

Usually moving clears this up for me. I think it just forces the cover stuff to re-evaluate itself and notice it's made a huge mistake. But, it only helps when I'm moving a guy that would force that specific alien to recheck it's cover.
