What's that 3rd flag there? Iraqi? That is exactly how I want my next Ironman classic run to go, as it was I was down Japan and Australia, and missing the alien containment at that point.
So, I went back to the save at the point where I'd uploaded all those screenshots thanks to a terrible downward spiral starting like 4 in game days later that I spent a few days trying to overcome.
I did two things differently: I captured the Outsider the story wanted me to capture instead of shooting it in the face, and I bought an extra Interceptor for the US.
The difference in how the game has played out with just 1 extra UFO shot down and a storyline mission completed is staggering.
God damnit. Managed to take a floater alive, but it appears the car that exploded next turn killed it so I lost the research and more importantly, the plasma rifle.
I started going almost the same route as you, except i went for SHIV's first and then started capturing.
Captured a floater but FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF alien containment ONE DAY from finishing.
I just want to say that Ironman Impossible, with a bunch of second wave random stuff enabled (Random stats, weapon damage, funding countries, mission rewards...) is The Game to me. Its still buggy, and it still is pretty easy to game the AI, but I'm playing the game I wanted Classic to be. I fought 27 Chrysalids on my first terror mission! Yessss.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go

So I was reading an article today that Scotland is going to have a vote by 2014 to stay part of the UK or not. Scotland having its own flag in this may actually be pretty accurate by 2015. Or not. Who knows.
For some reason, I am immensely amused by the fact that female soldiers have smaller assault rifles than males.

So does Nebraska, but I don't see that flag in this game.
What I mean is Scotland as its own country. In 2015, when this game takes place, Scotland may really be its own country like this game seems to imply by it having a separate set of soldiers from the UK.

Stupid question incoming. Apologies if it has been answered already.
How does one enable the second wave? I've beaten the game (albeit only on normal/normal) and I can't see any new checkboxes or anything...

I've yet to get a Female Heavy - which has really annoyed me for some reason. Hell the dudes to dudettes ratio in this game is already kind of absurd.

I still have yet to see a single UK soldier in my five games.
I really wish I could continue playing this... so far every game I've suffered numerous "freezes" in tactical combat. The game itself doesn't freeze - I just cannot issue orders to my troops and I cant even hit escape to exit out. Need to kill the process. It's really lessened my desire to continue playing
I know this is going to sound silly, but it seems like you're having a bottleneck that's jamming everything up.
Have you tried a hard re-start recently? I know we live in the future, but I've found when I get odd freezes or graphical crashes/lag...powering down and waiting 10 seconds seems to clear everything up for months.
Yep - Done that a few times. If I load the save it doesn't always get stuck in the same spot. Like I said the game itself continues to chug on... its just that none of my inputs work any more and all I can do is rotate the camera. I cannot switch to another unit or issue any orders to the current unit I have selected. It's extremely aggravating.
I have this happen to me quite often. I can't seem to order my men around, or click on anything, but the game still seems to be "running" and my mouse works fine. I found a way to unstick it and get it going again, for me anyway. Mouse click on your currently selected soldier's alternative weapon to make them switch. For some reason, that still works when everything else doesn't, and I can interact with the game properly again.

Also, im rocking all plasma weapons and Titan armor on all squad members. Its made me entirely too cocky... which is terribly dangerous in XCOM. But I mean, when you take a direct hit from a berserker, survive, and then blow it away with a plasma rifle... you begin to feel rather godlike.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

It is not. It is also a global panic reducer, so you might want to wait until you feel like you've farmed up some tech/weapons and have some countries in the orange/red.
If you bring back a live alien without the Containment, do you still get to keep their weapon?
Yes, so consolation is the 2 light plasma rifles i captured (I also got an outsider that mission, I am the god king of capturing aliens alive)
edit: if you have plasma and titan on all squad mates you're at end game power, even if the base assault isn't end game content. You can pretty much rush to the end game from where you are.
Been taking a swing at Classic Ironman and enjoying it a lot; just have to cross my fingers and hope the game doesn't completely screw me over with one of its many, many awful bugs. Game moves a whole heckuva lot faster when you can't even save to avoid having a slew of enemies magically dropped on you.
"many, many"? Please...
In 22+ 34 hours of gameplay I've run into two serious bugs. Once the game got stuck in reaction shot mode, and another time my grenades suddenly stopped working. Both times I forced the game closed with the task manager and then carried on from the last save, no biggie.
The number of squaddies which panic, then take an extra shot is rather disconcerting. Half the time panic is helping me!
I once had a squaddie score a critical hit on a high ranking team mate with his shiny new light plasma rifle, 9 points of damage. Luckily it didn't kill him, but christ on a bike.
The real kicker was, no one had even fucking died. Just a grenade happy muton in a cramped UFO interior, and that was enough to set the prick off!
Edit: just checked, 34 hours... didn't even realise. Game of the year!

It was the military base map, pretty much all of the civvies were in or around the giant building at the back and got killed by 'lids before I could have realistically reached them.
I would like to say that Rookie @Grey died heroically facing down the Cryssalid swarms but in reality she died on the first turn, when a group of floaters were discovered and immediately flew up over the wall and gunned her down with the flanking bonus.
Meanwhile @Dongs Galore earns the nickname 'Socks' because...well, use your imagination.
Still, there was a fine display of overwatch firing as zombie after zombie after Cryssalid were downed in a hail of fire as they all ran out of the base to attack us.

Yes, many many. Teleporting enemies, teleporting squaddies, bugged lines of sight, improperly equipped SHIVs, your initial rookies having less HP than purchased rookies, obvious and awful graphical bugs, cover bugs, PSI facility only taking 2 candidates instead of 3, inexplicably long turn resolution times, etc. etc. That's just stuff I have experienced, and I could name several more I've seen (but it's boring).
Just because you aren't seeing these bugs doesn't mean they don't exist. XCOM is buggy as fuck; it's just a fact. I just wish I was as lucky as you, because I'd enjoy the game a lot more without stumbling over a major quality issue all the time and I enjoy it a lot already.

Gentlemen! Behold! I GIVE YOU......
RAINBOW SQUAD, SAVIORS OF HUMANITY!
ROY G. BIV To the rescue. Minus the I. And the O isn't quite Orange.
Anyway, allow me to present the squad, left to right.
1. Col. "Zeus" @Lanructon - the sniper. 32 missions and 72 kills. Once he gained double tap and a plasma sniper, he became the bane of Sectopods. Two shots, done. I had more than one mission where he out-killed the entire rest of the squad in the late game. Add in some gost armor, and he became a hell of a scout as well. I really felt his absence on those missions where he was out for injury. As if he wasn't badass enough, he tested psychic late game.
2. Col. "Twitch" @Operative21 - spastic assault. 33 missions and 45 kills. Holy hell was he aptly nicknamed. Early on, he was my most commonly injured squaddie. Then he earned the nickname. From that point forward he was greased lightning. Nothing could touch him. On the downside, his caffiene/meth habit made it so that he couldn't hit the broad side of the barn. He has the distinction of being the only squad member to miss every single shot on a mission, including two 90% shots in a row. But man, was he excellent at drawing fire.
3. Col. "Prophet" @Dalantia - medic, support, and psychic. 21 missions and 25 kills. She was also, ahem, "The one." Joined the squad after a terror mission in Vancouver, was the first squaddie to test positive for psy. She could do it all. Heal, stun, spot for Zeus and best of all, armored up in full psy gear, take control of an elite Muton.
4. Col. "Vandal" @Ceno - assault, the rock. 32 missions and 60 kills. Came closer to dying, more often, than any other member of the squad. Much better shot than Twitch, he was the backbone of the team. Often the lead of one of two advances, he was also Prophet's bodyguard once she joined up. More than once he brought down a charging berserker right as it closed to melee range.
5. Col "Rogue" @Axen - support/ medic. 34 missions and 41 kills. Note he had almost as many kills as Twitch, who should be embarrassed. Rogue was the group's prime stunner, even taking down an ethereal. I think he was shot more than any other squad member, but somehow always managed to take the least possible damage. So, yay, medkits!
6. Col. "Disco" @CorriganX - Heavy weapons guy, death from above. 37 missions, 84 kills. This was one, tough bastard. He was my sole survivor from the tutorial, and lasted the whole game. Everyone else was a replacement. I credit the Ron Swanson 'stache. Late game, with the archangel armor, he became death on rocket powered wings, as well as the prime savior on terror missions. Early on, he was the grizzled veteran laying down fire, and keeping the enemies off the rookies. One early mission, he took down every single enemy, single-handedly.
Loved the game, bugs excepted of course. Camera issues made fighting on abductor class ships painful.
The above was a normal mode game, saves between missions only. No wipes. Guess I should try classic.
I'm not terribly upset at the level of bugginess so far, since it's only proven game-ruining once, but I can easily see someone like @Ninja Snarl P having a bad streak of luck when it comes to running into them.
I've most certainly stopped doing Ironman runs for at least a patch or two, though.

I am glad I am not doing ironman.
Yep, I got a game ending bug on a mission. Thank fuck for deciding to wait for a couple of patches before iron manning this game, because otherwise I would have lost all my progress and it would have really embittered my playthrough. I got the "stuck on alien activity forever" bug, which unfortunately can't be reloaded through - thankfully I regularly save on the geoscape. Went back, redid the mission and got through it fine without casualties.
Bullet dodged.
This is a seriously fantastic game, but honestly the bugs and issues really start to pile up the further in the game you go. That's my main disappointment with this game right now, but everything else being so fun or awesome makes up for these bugs. I really hope they intend to patch the console versions of the game.
Edit: Hadn't even been reading the thread when I wrote this and saw this page was another discussion on bugs!
You guys keep talking about how aliens get discovered and move or double move then shoot. This never happens to me. They get the discovery move and it ends their turn. Are you saying that they move into position with the discovery move and the next turn they start shooting? Because it has 100% ended their turn in every circumstance for me. They never shoot in the same turn as discovery.

Yeah that is the way it works. I have never ever seen aliens move after their discovery and shoot on the same turn, unless I discovered them with my last move on my turn.
In which case, the fault lies between chair and keyboard (or couch and tv).
Edit: neither have I seen patrols get discovered and fire either, as they use their first move getting to me and their second on the scatter. The only time the aliens scatter for free is on your turn when you discover them. I am still perfectly fine with this system and prefer it to them all fucking camping everywhere with overwatch.
I will say the teleporting mobs bug gets really severe the further you get into the game. It is not unusual now to have cyberdiscs be revealed right in the middle of my soldiers from nowhere.

They move when discovered but that doesn't count as a 'turn'. They'll never shoot at you or go into over watch during that initial discovery scramble. But if you stumble into a group on your last soldier's turn they are going to scramble and then it's going to be the aliens' turn and they are going to burn you into a puddle of goo.
