Can you imagine how much money a Red 5 outfit would make them?
Edit: a knockoff version of a famous space battle uniform
Alternatively, if I had a ship with a large enough crew, I would figure out how to give them color coded uniforms based on their job. I'm thinking of keeping it simple. Maybe red, yellow, and hmmmm blue? Yeah.
I'm only going to need one color for my crew. Red.
I have two character slots and will fly the Cutlass. Every engagement will be a Daddy-Daughter Dance, hopefully neither of them die too soon and crush my dreams.

This game is starting to scare me. It's not just the level of detail on the ships or the ability to customize and overclock ship systems. It's also the collectable fish that you can find via exploration and the character customization. Couple this with the fact that the best equipment simply cannot be bought but must be found through gameplay. Oh and the planned regular updates that will constantly add more content to the persistent universe. Plus there's a single player campaign. Chris Roberts is a madman seeking to steal my life, nay my very soul, and he isn't even charging a monthly fee or selling special currency for real money! I'm looking at years of my life getting sucked away!

Must get... an Oculus Rift!

I thought he is selling special currency for real money, it's just that the special currency won't necessarily buy you the best stuff.
Incorrect, there is only one type of currency. You earn it through gameplay but you can also buy a limited amount each month. The idea is that people have real world obligations, like families and jobs, which would prevent them from putting a bunch of time into the game. So it's more of a convenience thing for people with lives.
I dunno if you guys saw this, but the guy who posted this on SC's forums got a response from CR himself noting how impressed he was.
Man, flying with the ability to turn your head on a whim is going to be disorienting for a while. My HOTAS config is going have to cover everything as it won't be easy to flip up the RIFT to look at the keyboard. Typically, I do map the most critical stuff to the stick/throttle, but a lot of the low priority stuff I just leave on the keyboard as it's just easy enough to look down and tap the keyboard, but the rift is going to get in the way of that. Can't wait to see how they implement their HUD.
For the first time, I'm probably going to have to actually utilize the three-way toggle switch on my HOTAS Cougar so I can have a "dogfighting" mode, a "cruise" mode, and a "whatever else" mode or however those three-way toggle switches are set up. because of all the functions that will be needed to be mapped. Another thing I've never really utilized on the Cougar is the two extra axes on the throttle or the mini joystick. though I'm not sure what would need to use it in a Space sim, at most it's usually just the two joystick axes, throttle, and rudder are all that's needed, the rest are just buttons.
I'm going to look SO WEIRD with a Rift over my eyes and a headset on top of that.

I bought one a few years back but didn't care for it. It didn't fit my hand very well but in all fairness I do have large mitts. My advice is try before you buy, if that's at all possible.
I'm a lefty but I trained myself to mouse with my right back when I was in college. I had one of those old MS intellimouses that of course, claimed they were good for either hand, but my hand started to cramp up, and I think that was about the time I was introduced to WASD so I figured I just better get used to it.
And yeah, I have repeatedly been tempted to get one of those nostromos. I keep hearing that they don't work well for people with bigger hands and just figured I had enough clutter on my desk
My hands are huge, so those things feel like adorable tinker toys. Neat idea, though.

Each of the buttons on that is the same size as a keyboard button. The piece your palm goes on can move back a bit to make it more comfortable, but if you have gorilla hands then I don't know what to tell you.
Additionally, you can just flip open the front of the box it comes in and the device is covered in plastic on the inside, so you can put your hand over it and see if it is too small.

Behold your true lord and savior because ew Razer:
I honestly don't see myself ever using an Oculus with this game. Needing to go from joystick flying to KBAM shooting to having to yell at whoever is raiding my Connie's beer fridge via text chat would be kind of a hassle with the Rift. I kinda hope this game has TrackIR support since it's much better suited for that sorta thing.

Not to mention you won't notice me sneaking around with that gear on your head. You'll finish playing the game only to realize everything but your computer and desk is gone.
Getting a rift just isn't in the cards for me. Eventually the wife unit would discover my financial malfeasance (thing is way too expensive) and a shank to the kidney would surely follow. A loving shank, because she's my wife, but a shank nonetheless.

I am not generally happy with Logitech products. The electronics are fine, but I have had far too may instances where they are made with thin plastic being all that is holding a high stress point together. If I can find the wreckage of my G930 headphones I will post a picture later.

I have a feeling I'll end up getting an OR eventually. It seems like TrackIR++.

As far as I can tell, it's only available online and/or through Razer directly. The Stealth version (which is the one I have) is only available directly from Razer.

Yeah see, that sort of thing seems like it would be super useful. It's like having another joystick hat. Imagine having a joystick for your right hand and using the hat to look around, and having a joystick on your left thumb and using that to fire the engines that ships in games with Newtonian flight models have. That would be a lot easier to control than having to map all those extra engine functions to keyboard buttons. I've also wondered whether it would let me scroll around the map in RTS games while using my mouse to control units but that's getting off topic. Suffice to say that if I had infinite money I would've bought one already to try it out.
If this game really does deliver on everything it's promising, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be buying A) a brand new gaming computer, the best HOTAS available, and C) an Oculus Rift. And thinking about it, if I'm in love enough with the game to do A, B, and C, chances are I'll even do D) have a woodworking project to make an ultra nerdy cockpit to sit in while I play.

sometimes I feel like the only reason I'm saving up for a house is so that I would have room for cockpit project. Of course I could just get this:
That's where the Rift is so great. Instead of having to buy 3 or more monitors, the Rift does it all! And your homemade cockpit can look like shit as long as it feels like a real one!
Here's a new video that shows ship scale. I'm loving that this game isn't even out yet and there are already modders doing cool things. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_t9BefIXFE
Honestly it's no more ridiculous than a space based military organization running around pretending to be at sea. Because the moment humanity starts to weaponize space the navy will step in and take over. Trust me guys it makes total sense.
Dear Chris Roberts...
I like how all the guns are on top. It's not like anyone is ever going to attack from below or anything...
The guns are on top because that's the actual Battleship Yamato, they recovered it from the dried up ocean floor and refitted it into a super spacebattleship.
