So heres the question: I can pick this up for 10 dollars. Should I? It got pretty universally panned in reviews, but the action just looks so ludicrously over the top that I cant imagine it not being at least a little bit of fun. Critics complain about "too much confusing stuff going on" and "button-mashy-ness," but is it really that bad?
Also, regarding Viewtiful Joe in general, why did the series turn out so poorly? I mean, the first game was great, probably the best action game I've ever played, and certainly my favourite of last generation. However, a quickie sequel and a few handheld rush-jobs later, and its quits for Viewtiful Joe? Seems like a waste of pure potential to me. Does anyone think theres a chance for a sequel? VJ's wiki article had some interesting things to say on the possibility of a trilogy, and whether or not it may or may not yet be complete, but Im hoping that the newly formed Seeds studio will be able to make a great new Viewtiful Joe for the next generation.
Also: anyone seen the anime? Is it any good? I saw a short clip on youtube and couldnt determine whether it was something special or just the usual drek.
It fills in some of the story details for the rest of the series, but as mentioned earlier, it tries to be a Powerstone/Smash Brothers type game with Viewtiful Joe characters and doesn't handle it well. I still keep it in my collection for completion's sake, and I did have some fun with it.

I'd say the biggest flaw of this game is that it did not copy smash bros enough. Every attack sends the other characters flying, so there are no combos, and there is no real "last man standing" sort of play. The objective is always to get the most V-points, which can be obtained by beating up the other players or enemies on stage and fufilling the current mission's requirements: collect the most gems, deal the boss the most damage, get rid of the most bombs, etc. Also, there is a mini-game item which will award V-points to whomever wins the minigame. These include "mash the buttons" (this is probably where the button mashing complaints come from) "spin the analog and c-stick" "press the button that appears," and two "time the button presses" type minigames. The computer is very cheap at these. Also, the movie powers are present in the form of items. Using a slow, mach speed, or sound effect item will make you invincible for the duration of the item, and zoom makes you huge. These cannot be turned off. In fact, I am surprised the people that argue that smash is meant to be a party game do not like this game more, because it is basically smash bros with the randomness x4. There are a lot of characters to unlock, but most of these are palette changes with 1-2 move differences.
When DVD Empire announced they were going to stop selling video games I got this for $8 and had some fun with it. So, for $10, sure, go for it.
As for VJ in general, I liked the first and second games and thought the DS was an ok game, if not really easy. The second game's ending basically said "yes trilogy" but with how Clover ended up, I'm not hopeful for an ending.

What?
oh... how depressing.
It seems fairly mediocre otherwise. I want to play RHR with my friends, but they just laugh and boot up another round of SSBM...
Dude, that's Frenzy.

For the love of God. Do all of you sheep who constantly complain about the second game have any experience with it at all? It's a good game.
Yes, I have played it.
I've also played Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble
They weren't very good at all
I quite enjoyed them both. I honestly don't understand the "It's popular to hate this game" mentality that Viewtiful Joe 2 attracts.
I don't hate it because other people hate it.
I hate it because I didn't like it.
Or is that a bad reason
