See now that right there is style.

Uhm, it's a dated style. Nehru collars were in for a few years, a few years 2 decades ago. People keep trying to bring them back, but you will look like you're trying way too hard, and the only people who would be impressed by a striking fashion statement are the same people who are going to know your style is way dated (and not retro).
I was thinking more in comparison to sky blue hoodies and... members only hoodies. This thread does not deliver.

Senj, what kind of stuff do you wear?
Most days when I'm just schlepping it to class it's jeans + t-shirt + nice sweater. I wouldn't call it overly fashionable.

You don't need to be fashionable, Senj, I think you're sexy in nothing at all. :winky:

I'm 18 and I think it's about time to abandon the T-Shirt and Jeans uniform, or at least make it a little more planned-out than grabbing one pair of jeans and a random t-shirt in the morning.

Where do I start? Do I go out with a budget and pick a full set of clothes that all go together? What stores should I be shopping at if I don't have a huge cash flow to spend?

I have to admit I like the look in this picture. It is basically the t-shirt and jeans deal, but with a little more thought as far as colors go and the overshirt adds a really nice touch. The best part about that outfit though is the way the green shirt grabs attention from the rest of the outfit, I'd like to incorporate that into my own style.

So basically teach me the ways of low-budget style.

classy-casual dress shirts, jeans that aren't ridiculously faded but have enough of a texture not to be boring, not too dark. pair of brown cords for classing it up otherwise jeans and dress shirts is a great look. if it's cold i'll just throw a fitted plain hoodie or a something with a simple pattern over the existing setup for more of a casual look. eg.

paying for skate/surf brands kill me because the cost is ridiculous but esp volcom has some amazing tshirt designs that you can't really find anywhere else. i'm not a big threadless dude i find most of them corny i know i am in the minority on this though. personally i think the sweaters in the op have a 'teenager' look to them and the cloud one looks more tie die than anything. again personal preference but i go for the more dressed up but laid back look..

hmmm.... does it make it wrong to spend $1,000 on an outfit?

Because if thats wrong... well then I have been wasting a shitload of cash.... hmmmm.

I think its all about personal tolerance levels. If you are inclined to spend ludicrous (yes I know my spending is stupid) amounts of cash and you have the dough, then why not?

In my experience, the more expensive something is (ignore olol its expensive it must be awesome! type apparel), the better it fits.

For me, fit is absolutely critical. I don't care how cool something looks, if it doesn't fit perfectly, i'm not interested. Conversely, if it fits right, then damnit, I want it!

Ted Baker, Seven, Diesel, Morissey (to name just a few!)... this stuff tends to fit well extremely well, hence the reason why its more expensive.

    100USD is about 40 quid, isn't it?

Shit, I'm not sure I own anything less than that that ain't underwear.

I generally wear brown combats or dark blue jeans, with a t-shirt and usually a jumper or longsleeve. Pretty much all my clothese are "branded", but only because finding anything else that looks as good and doesn't feel cheap is impossible in Cornwall*. Been wearing a lot of pre-distressed looking stuff recently, as I think it looks good without looking like you've made too much of an effort - being overdressed is always worse than being underdressed**

I never wear any jewellry or accessories (except my precious headphones) though I always make sure to wear nice (read: expensive :( ) glasses or sunglasses (because I have to so I can see)

*Surfing / Sailing capital of the UK. Clothes shops come in two varieties: Quiksilver/Henri Lloyd and charity shops, and unfortunately for my bank account I have too much pride.

**And underdressing should of course be punishable by death.

I have a charcoal one. It works out very well, and can be worn with both jeans and khakis.

I always love the look of blue shirts and jackets, but I always forget that they tend not to go very well with jeans, so I have a fuckton of blue shirts that I can't wear most of the time.

This thread needs more pictures. I will try and find my camera again.

What do you wear under the blazer? I wear khakis all the time, but I can never figure out what goes well with them. What this usually results in is wearing whatever the hell my sister gives me for birthdays and Christmas, because she actually has a sense of style.

Depends on how formal you want to go. Button down shirt and tie, button down shirt w/o tie, polo (that can look weird sometimes though, check yourself out in a mirror first), if it's super cold, throw a nice sweater over the button-down shirt. If you want to go for the hipster look, just wear a nice Arcade Fire/Radiohead/Explosions in the Sky band shirt.

A lot of times if you are buying something like a suit jacket you can pick it up cheap at a thrift store and then have it altered by a tailer. The total price is still only a fraction of what it takes to buy one in a normal store.

Actually, I got ultra-lucky once and picked up a really sharp 2-piece blue suit that fits me perfectly. For like, $5.

Edit: It was really wierd, frankly, because every other suit-jacket I've worn the sleeves are a bit too long (just not so much so to justify throwing money at the problem). Not this one.

    A sleek hi5 indeed.

Sadly, I'm too perpetually pale to pull off most black clothing. It has to be incredibly faded or essentially gray (hence the charcoal-colored jacket) for me to not look gothed out. I can be wearing a pair of faded bluejeans with a green and white band shirt, but if I'm wearing so much as black leather shoes, I'm totally gothed out. The fact that I have a thing for quasiformal shirts doesn't help my case so much.

At the risk of actually seeming kind of goth by the way, this shirt? Fucking awesome.
Custom made in the U.K., the cut of the medium fits me perfectly, and it's just too damn cool. The sleeves, collar, and waist all have a weird torn look about them (it doesn't show up well in that picture, sadly). Great shirt.

I like winter. It lets me layer. Layering lets me mess around with colors and patterns that complement or contrast eachother in aesthetically appealing ways. I get to have more fun with picking out what I'm going to wear because I have the opportunity to actually put something together instead of just making sure the two things I pick don't clash in a visually offensive manner.

Another aye for winter, especially since my complexion is winter (White skin, near-black hair, black everything else).

Winter is also great for dressier women. They can do so much interesting stuff with layering around their curves.

Short skirts and long jackets, dammit.

Also, wearing a black leather trench coat over business attire in 115 degree weather is not as fun as it should be.

I need to buy a new pair of khaki pants for spring/summer. I've been wear corduroys all winter and have grown fond of the color/style of the ones I have, but they are a tad too warm once it gets over 55 degrees or so. Also my old pair of khakis doesn't fit any more because my quad muscles are apparently way huger than they were a year ago. (Thank you Tang Soo Do ... I guess?)

Also I think I will be wearing more skirts this summer since my legs look so good now and since I found a really cute pair of black Mary Janes (flat shoes with a strap over the instep, for the dudes in the thread) that are also super comfy, since they have sort of a sneaker-style sole. They will look super awesome with my peasant skirt.
