The proportional distribution keeps the same proportion of names as in Firaxis' DefaultNameList. The ratio is basically 18 American : ~5 everyone else. Full details are available in the file and on the Recruit Collector spreadsheet. The short, short version of the differences: a lot of American, Australians, English, and Germans became African, Indian, and Japanese. Preference is kept where possible.
Oh man I had a dream where I was playing this and ran into an alien that just ran up to my guys and exploded. It did not do very much damage but it destroyed all the cover around it in a huge radius allowing the rest of the aliens to get easy shots. How messed up is it that I'm having dreams like that?
Has anyone else played the multiplayer? Because I think it might actually be better than the game. Just tried my first three matches and won the first one by using a Sectoid as bait and then when he move in on it I flanked his best guy and killed him, then picked off his Sectoid. Turns out he also had a Sniper on the roof who I grenaded then walked up the ladder and shot in the face.
Second game I decided to just put all my points into a single Psi Warrior Assault in Ghost Armor and an Alloy Cannon. Had enough left to take a Sectoid, who died to reaction fire coming out a door. I ghosted and shot the offender in the face. But then his assault ran up to me and shot me in the face.
So I decided giving him Psy powers was a waste and just made him a regular Gunner with Ghost and Alloy Cannon. That meant I could add a Muton. I Ghost and dash the first two turns into the bar while my two aliens slowly advance behind. Two Chrysalids burst in and go for my guys, not realizing they walked in a trap. My guy decloaks behind them and shoots one in the face. Muton drops the other 'lid to 1 health. Two Thin Men pop up on the roof and poison my Muton and Assault, and the Chrysalid attempts to get revenge on my Assault but fails to kill him. So he gets shot in the face while the Muton picks off one of the Thin Men and my Sectoid suppresses the other. Thin Man attempts to return fire, misses. Human with a laser rifle runs up. Spend the next turn killing the Thin Man and dashing my ghosted Assault behind the enemy human, who on her turn tries to take out the Muton. Assault, down to like one or two health, decloaks and caps her.
Yeah, MP is pretty great. No one seems to be playing it ever tho. And the only match I've played so far had me an' the other guy using the exact same build.
I have loved the multiplayer ever since the atomic pc event where we had that little round robin. It's great to combine human and alien units to make some interesting combinations. Most people are playing the sp well before the mp it seems.
Just tried to start a game on Impossible Ironman. First mission: Gas station.
Fuck you too, game. Fuck you too.
Made it with only 1 casualty, then wiped on the first abduction because it was that shitty graveyard with the alley down the side.
The graveyard with the alley is easy. Sooo much high cover and flanking opportunity
Not when there's about 15 Sectoids spread out across it and your Assault was the casualty in the first mission.
I started a second game because whiffing on the first abduction is a death sentence even on Classic. First mission: That rooftop construction site, not too bad. Made it through with only 1 wound.
First abduction: The other graveyard, with at least 3 packs of Sectoids between me and the building. It's like the game is trying to tell me something.

I want to complete the single player first, I assume multiplayer will let you see all aliens and equipment. But I'm looking forward trying it, soon I hope.

Almost all units are in MP. SHIVs and a particular "alien" unit aren't.

You know, why are you getting so many of those flanking issues? I have seen it wig out on me once on the 360 version and it was much more ambiguous. I wonder if the patch on PC broke more than it actually fixed...
Even Classic sets the bullshit seismograph woggling violently several times an hour.
There would have to be one hell of a bug-and-playability patch before I'd consider Impossible runs.

Possibly. I only ocasionally see those kinds of flanking issues, but I'm having all sorts of other bugs since the patch.
Is time a gift or punishment?

I was saying pre release ironman classic or nothing, then I heard about the bugs. So I just did ironman my traditional way and enjoyed classic anyway. Had I done ironman I would have lost the entire game to the alien activity hanging bug.
Very glad I did not, as I won my first classic game because I decided not to go ironman. Can't wait until they fix these bugs to go impossible ironman >: D
Actually alien ships have weird geometry, especially the part in the 2nd screen shot. If you notice the lines on the ground, you can notice that it is jagged and so, yes you are behind the sectoid and not in line with him.
If you in a jagged edge on one side of that opening and the enemy is in the jagged edge on the other side, you won't be able to see him. It is bad design but when you're working with grids I suppose it is an unfortunate limitation.
Speaking of which, trying to flank by being in line with enemy cover seems to be borked by the looks of things. Also, even if you are flanking an enemy, there is no debuff status? If so, enemy icons won't go yellow unless it is absolutely at 100%?
Edit: Trucks might be bugged because there is a section between the trailer and the truck which is half cover? That shot from the front of the truck seems to fail to flank enemies consistently
I finally figured out that if you turn the camera, you can sometimes put your soldiers in the correct spot when they're in those terrible large UFO interiors.
It helps a little, but not enough for me to try to ironman it again.

Yeah clicking to move is a bit like russian roulette. Will my assault slowly creep to that full cover or jump down a ledge and dash into the middle of a group of mutons.

Playing with f and c helps a little bit.
The thought of Ironman pretty much went out of the window when my sniper decided to run straight into a group of aliens instead of moving into cover above them where I thought I was clicking.
After the third or sixth time I sent my assault major to stand fully exposed in front of a group of x-rays instead of the fully covered flanking position, I decided that not being able to save regularly wan't for me.

I've found that using a controller removes most of the issues.
Can someone clue me in how ghost suits work? can I just put everyone in ghost suits and leapfrog from cover to cover to stay virtually undetectable?

No, cover just gives you an extra 20 defense. You have to activate the ghost mode to stay invisible.

Do I have to stand still while in ghost mode? can I fire or move?

Ghost has an active skill with 4 uses that doesn't count towards your actions that turn. Using it makes you invisible to most enemies (I still got shot in the face by a Sectopod, maybe they've got thermal imaging or some shit) and gives you 100% chance to crit. It lasts either one turn or until you shoot, so don't overwatch with a ghosted unit.
Ah, thanks. Sounds...um...interesting? Maybe for assaults or something. I'm not sure I want to send a lone dude dashing into the enemy ranks, even with a ghost suit.
Even without ghost mode it has a ridiculous array of passive bonuses; 20 defense, 2 (or 3, can't remember) extra movement, and a grappling hook. It's generally more useful than the titan suit. I use it on anyone who isn't psychic.

The cloak lasts throughout the enemy turn so long as you don't attack, so if you ghost into enemies then you will be able to easily retreat (though you will trigger them on your turn)

The ghost armor is really, really, really good. I've never been let down by it. You can put a guy right next to 3 mutons and guarantee they won't see him until the cloak comes down at the start of your next turn, at which point you can activate it again if you like. It also gives a 100% crit chance, so you can use it when you absolutely 100% have to kill a motherfucker.
Also my idea for an elite version of the thin man is this: they're infiltrators, so an advanced version is an infiltrator that is indistinguishable from a human being. They look exactly the same until they pull a pistol and shoot you. Now put this enemy into a terror mission.
Do you see.
Do you.

Ghost armor and assaults are hilarious. I had two of them and the single handedly cleared the final mission by themselves.
Edit: I am pretty sure a ghost assault is the way to go for the lone wolf achievement.

Heh, Firaxis could have a lot of fun with this; maybe these guys come with light rifles and poison like thin men, but maybe some have suicide charges too and will pop when you try to save them to do massive collateral damage.
Also in those missions normal civilians can be targetted (with a different icon so you don't get confused), to leave you with the thought of "if it comes down to it I can just shoot every fucker that I see".
I already do that with heavies. Sorry that Chrysalid was using you as cover dude, better you than me! Oh there were people behind that car? Meh, at least that Cyberdisk is gone!

It is fun. Trying to figure out a team that can at least have a chance against every enemy type, but it's difficult. Which is part of the fun.

Actually doing the math the second one is lying to you in the more info, and it's actually flanking the sectoid.
The first one's bogus though.
