Just_Bri_Thanks is as clusmy as he is stupid. He's standing next to a door in an alley. At the far end of the alley, an alien charges across. He decides the smartest possible move is to bash the door open before firing at the alien.
5 sectoids appeared. This will probably end very badly.
The algorithm by which they determine if you need to bash open a door or window before firing is so fucking flaky.
I've seen a Sectoid bash open the window he was standing by to mindlink with his buddy standing in the same room
@Just_Bri_Thanks died, but that's OK; in addition to his door-bashing OCD, he missed a perfectly reasonable 72% shot. @Sirialis took 3 damage, but pulled through, @exis and @dongs galore are healthy. All earned promotions.
I'm sad that I don't seem to have made into anybody's game yet
You have. A number of times, I think. Just on the dozens of runs that end before they begin - second mission wipes and the like. I've only seen my namesake twice.
@BahamutZero is so badass, that as a rookie, nearly dead, he can kill an alien by pointing at it and saying BANG!
Disappointed that I didn't see what was happening until a few seconds too late so I didn't grab the screenshot with the bullets actually spraying out of his finger.
Sweet mercy, just had a terror mission with 21 Chrysalids, they just never stopped coming. On the plus side, chitin plates for everybody!

I cannot wait for season two of Beagles LP.
Once I can steal the tv the PA ironman game should be starting tonight or so. Ah XCOM, where the greatest challenge is getting the tv to play the game in the first place. Damn you one tv house, damn you!

I had a mission like that, on the courthouse map. Didn't even try to go inside, we just set up shop out front with overlapping fields of fire and mowed 'em down as they came charging out at us. Fortunately, that seemed to be a higher priority for the bugs than going after the civvies.
I think I'm going to have to re-start my CI attempt.
Four missions in, and I have a 75% loss rate. Only one survivor each time.
Things almost start to improve (although the whole of Europe has decided they've had enough of me), but then I get the terror mission.
Total wipe after I get swarmed by Chrysalids (and these were just from zombies that wandered on screen, so the original ones were still out there.)
That followed by another wipe where the game springs Mutons on me (I have original weapons and armor, and don't see how I could have anything else at this point. Okay, if I hadn't had to hire 20/30 people I'd be able to afford them, but I just haven't had time to research them).
I finally decided screw it, and went at the next abduction mission full-speed.
I actually got my best result yet (one death, one critically wounded), but I now have one able-bodied soldier left, and no way to raise money for more.
And a very hard terror mission just popped up.
On a scale of one to ten, I'm so boned.
I'm going to have to dial it down to a save-scumming Classic attempt, or I'm never going to get anywhere.
On classic and up you gotta be more defensive. Try to stay within your blue movement range and not expose too much map at one time, less chance of triggering multiple groups. Also, I found that overwatch and suppression are incredibly helpful. I try to run, casualties permitting, 2 assault, 2 supression support, a supression heavy, and a squadsight sniper. The supression really helps keep them pinned down for a long sniper shot or allow the assaults to close in for the kill. Crowd management has saved me from multiple squad wipes.
Also, that terror mission was the one with all the tanks. Only lost one support troop. Was able to lock down the approached pretty well with all laser weapons. Beats the hell out of my last run with nothing but rookies with starting guns... there were no survivors.
Just had a recent imp/iron game go tits up. I went for fast research on this one with a starting lab and rushing captures. And was doing well as in had sectoid captured before end of month 1, had floater and outsider from first UFO mission in month 2. Problem was even though I had lasers researched by the 2nd day of month 2 I didn't have enough engineers to build them! Also my only vets were snipers since I lost or sacrificed others to get captures.
When the first terror mission popped in month 2 I had 2 squadsight, gunslinger snipers with ballistics, 2 rookies and a medkit support all lasers. It was the miserable army base map, my first contact was a clown car of EVERYTHING. 2 squads of 3 lids and 2 squads of 3 floaters. The combo of floaters and and lids together ruined my shit. The floaters meant I couldn't move optimally because I needed cover. The chysalids meant I couldn't use my snipers or they would get eaten. And zombies have 14 hp so its a minimum of 3 laser shots to down them.
I'm convinced that the research plasma rush strategy is a bust. Even under ideal circumstances you won't have light plasma until the end of month 2. And by the beginning of month 2 you are seeing 6 hp floaters and thin men so the assault rifles might as well be slingshots.
Rushing plasma? isn't that kind of suicidal? you rush satellites, people.
Ehhhhhhhhh, you can afford to tell brazil to shove it.

I love the army base as a terror map. terror mission means you get to set up close to the skyranger and there are no static enemy spawns, every alien is running around patrolling and killing civilians. now please come down this corridor of dooooooom between the tanks, cheers mates.
that map where beagle lost his last terror mission is madness, though. first time I actually pulled out of a mission, goodbye (ironically) Australia.
I only play CI, though, so I got it easy compared to ImpI

Yeah, I got rolled on that map (the mall) the first time I played it on Classic too. It's like "Here, why don't you stay down in the corner while floaters dance around and give the Chrysallids time to eviscerate you!"

and sorry only one of your guys is ever going to get LOS on that sectopod behind those impenetrable bookshelves/wooden walls without waking up more enemies. hope you like those ae shellackings.... at that point i have usually phased out grenades, so I am partially to blame myself. just can't pass up on upgraded scopes.
I wish ironman had an option to start after the first mission with a random number of survivors with random injuries. The first mission of impossible ironman is entirely luck based with the outcome 80% determined by the map (I almost always get perfect on the grocery store map where you can immediately get to the roof) and 20% the enemy's aggressiveness. On the city street map with the water running down the pavement there is very little full cover, and none that can't be destroyed, so you get murdered if the enemy doesn't stupidly run into your overwatches.

Those nades wouldn't help you against the sectopod anyhow

on that map, that time.... bookshelves were the sectopod's best allies. grenades beat books, no matter what Indy's father will tell you.
Has anyone noticed that Chrysalids apparently give no fucks with regard to ceilings? Whether it's an Alien Craft, a three story building, or a truck, Chrysalids in my games just go from one floor to the next in a single hop, yet there is no available holes through which these effortless egresses take place.
Rushing plasma? isn't that kind of suicidal? you rush satellites, people.
You rush both. One is engineering, one is research. They are not mutually exclusive.
'rushing plasma' just means you don't waste any time or resources on Laser weapons. You start by researching xeno-biology and then the arc thrower and start capturing aliens, researching plasma weapon use as soon as you capture a muton in month 2/beginning of month 3. It's the best way to play classic and it's good on impossible too. Though on impossible the increased number of aliens actually means you can afford to spend fragment on getting laser weapons, possibly just getting a sniper/heavy laser, before moving on to unlock light plasma for everyone else.

See, I don't get the appeal of light plasmas for everyone.
They're just slightly more accurate laser rifles. Heavies and snipers can't use them, and assaults should have a shotgun like God intended, leaving you with a bonus equivalent to giving all your supports SCOPES. Meanwhile, your poor snipers, assaults, and heavies have to wait much longer to get good guns.
I never find weapon fragments much of a hurdle on classic. Lasers are cheap.
I mean, it slows down a few Foundry projects, but most foundry projects are useless anyway.
+10 aim is a big deal. Enemies in the first 3 months are easy enough to take down with base weapons so there's no need to upgrade. And the sooner you have plasma snipers, heavy plasma and plasma cannons for interceptors the better. You can also outfit everyone with plasma pistols, the best sidearm in the game, pretty much straight away. You also get faster satellites coverage and construction projects completed since you save a significant amount of money on not manufacturing laser weapons.

I like to tell myself there are vents in the ceiling that they climb through.
I am at the hump on my latest CI run. My support troopers got reamed a few missions back and I am trying to get two new troopers promoted back up to competence levels, but everyone's weapons and armor is upgraded to plasma and titan/archangel and my four colonels (2 assault 1 sniper 1 heavy) are chomping at the bit wondering how long it's going to take these two asshole support sergeants to turn into combat medics so we can hit the base.
Hopefully not so long that we have to fight another sectopod...

See, these arguments always say things like "save a significant amount of money", and I wonder if we're playing the same game. Even expensive laser gear is like 20 bucks. At most, the savings from lasers is two satellites.
And when Mutons show up, I like being able to one shot them.

Beagle you brilliant bastard. Especially the gold sectoid award
I mainly came in to say that I got two more weirdly-named missions in a row: Burning Father and Blinding Mother.
Game has issues, yo.
say that three times fast
I laughed :P Good stuff.

two grenades = instant car explosion.
One rocket works too. Gets some beautiful multikills.
Why I fear the ocean.
Yeah, that's what persuaded me to try the double-grenade thing.
thought it was likely "the car hasn't taken enough damage to explode this turn", or similar.
I'm with you guy.
If you have a guy on overwatch, it pins down the hostile.
Which means he doesn't run from the exploding car.
It's a good trick.

Probably the most fun kind of mission there is. Shooting gallery? why thank you.
Provided you have laser weapons, 2 Assaults with zone control and some explosives.
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
If the RNG allows it, I'd like to try a 6 Heavy team one day. 12 Rockets and 6 shredders should fuck with anything's day.
