First victory in the bag. Classic Normal. Win screen, final assault group and hero board all on display. Standouts this game, @JDarksun for sure, even though he lost it near the end.
Anyone happen to know what triggers the Foundry to be available to be built? Seems like it is taking longer than usual this game.
Unlocks via research. Experimental Warfare IIRC.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Now that I'm playing on classic the choice between 3 medkit uses and 2 smoke grenade uses is really difficult. I decided to split the difference and just always take 2 supports with me. And then XCOM happened and they're both dead.
Started a Classic Ironman with the PA names. 3 missions in:
Mission 1: Operation Broken Skull (Abduction site in Kolkata, India)
RK. DASUBEREDWARD, RK. URQUANLORD88, RK. DISORIENTED FOX, and RK. COMRADEBOT.
Start off well, but when URQUANLORD88 takes a shot and goes down to 1 heath, all but DASUBEREDWARD panic, and DISORIENTED FOX shoot COMRADEBOT in the back of the head, taking him down to 1 health. Rest of the mission goes fine though, and they all come out of it promoted, with DISORIENTED FOX, the one who shot her teammate, being the only one coming out uninjured.
Mission 2: Operation First Heat (Abduction site in Vancouver, Canada)
RK. THE BURNIN8OR, SQ. DISORIENTED FOX, RK. BAHAMUTZERO, and RK. BASTABLES.
A few hairy moments, but it all turns out for the best with 0 casualties and everyone promoted. And we managed to not shoot each other this time. Always nice...
Mission 3: Operation Crystal Rain (Downed UFO in Japan)
SQ. DASUBEREDWARD, CPL. DISORIENTED FOX, SQ. BAHAMUTZERO, and SQ. BASTABLES.
Starts well, eliminating multiple packs of Sectoids, but, with the crafts leader in site, SQ. BAHAMUTZERO makes the ultimate sacrifice, being decimated by a single shot from the enemy Outsider. Fear not though, for SQ. BASTABLES avenged his fallen comerade with a well placed shot from his LMG. As we mourn our fallen comrade, we know that while she may be the first, she likely will not be the last...
I figure this first run will last about 3-4 more missions before I lose miserably. That being said, I was considering doing a video series like Beagle's, chronicling the exploits of the PennyArcade XCOM team when I start the next playthrough. Is that something people would actually be interested in seeing?
God damn this game is unforgiving!!! I haven't restarted any missions yet.....but I have rage quit twice.
My rookies are getting torn up. I took the easiest abduction mission just to give my team (and me) a boost in morale! Sorry France, but Japan's mission was easier!
I should probably add to the thread that @Rend is the biggest badass that ever wielded a shotgun, he has his own corral of captured sectoids by now and a belt made of thin men glasses (heads didn't work out, the stink was unbearable)
@Frei however, should learn how to fucking shoot straight. I gave you a sniper rifle AND a scope. What more do you want!?
Rushing plasma? isn't that kind of suicidal? you rush satellites, people.
You rush both. One is engineering, one is research. They are not mutually exclusive.
'rushing plasma' just means you don't waste any time or resources on Laser weapons. You start by researching xeno-biology and then the arc thrower and start capturing aliens, researching plasma weapon use as soon as you capture a muton in month 2/beginning of month 3. It's the best way to play classic and it's good on impossible too. Though on impossible the increased number of aliens actually means you can afford to spend fragment on getting laser weapons, possibly just getting a sniper/heavy laser, before moving on to unlock light plasma for everyone else.
You don't have the resources to "rush" both. Either you open with scientists + lab to get get arc throwers fast or you open with engineers to guarantee your 2nd uplink in month 2. If you spend money on powerplant + containment + arc thrower you won't have the cash to go for uplink + sats in month 2. Its possible to get really lucky in nation requests and council mission but at least for my impossible play throughs I've never been able to succeed in a bomb mission in month 1 and only try escorts if I have at least 3 troops that don't use rifles.
With both the engineer and science strategies you will have lasers the first week of month 2, but if you go science first you aren't guaranteed the 12 engineers you need to get laser rifles. And without laser rifles your rookies and support are totally useless vs 6 hp floaters and thin men.
I've never made it past month 2 with the science strategy, I have occasionally made it through month 3 with the engineer strategy. From what I can tell the main draw of the science strategy is you will have skeleton suits by the end of month 2 compared to the engineer strategy where you have carapace armor.
Beagle's Ironman Impossible Season 2 Episode #1 - Broken Sentinel
I learned a lot from this series. I was hoping his first map would be the city street with running water so I could see what tactics actually work on that one.

Squadsight snipers on both sides of the bus stop.
For a first mission, though? Probably just lots of retreat-and-overwatch.

So much depth to this game, its kind of nuts. Watching that YouTube video gave me some tips I didn't know that Dashing makes you less likely to get hit when an Alien is on overwatch. using that to burn an overwatch and then move guys into flanking positions was neat!
I am behind the game in Satellites, need to recover on that. I don't want to start over, but I may have to!
Also, nothing more thrilling then being in a UFO, have 2 guys on one door, 2 on the other. Open one door, aliens take cover. Open the 2nd door right ot the Aleins side and blow them both away. Just felt right!

Doesn't work, the enemy camps by their own bus stop. Unless they are blow away the SUVs which are the only full cover in which case they will charge.

Wait, is this true?
This literally changes everything.
It is true and sometimes I wish that I could dash within the blue area (and give up my action) just to waste an overwatch before advancing and going in for an attack.
I kinda wish I could take my whole squad with me to a mission site, then decide who to deploy once I knew what map I'd be on.
Is it one of those UFO maps with nothing but miles of half-cover? Bring out the squadsight snipers baby.
Skyranger upgrades that allowed you to swap in specialists or call in mid-mission reinforcements from the landing zone would be something I would like to see in an expansion or DLC. That and a speed boost cause having both a downed UFO and abduction mission pop up at the same time can happen.
Black lives matter.

We need to update that ini file so I can get in on the action.
It's been updated a few times - you've been in at least two of my games.
Let's just say there wasn't much of a surprise in your performance.

I want to be in that file as well, guys. I throw, like, the bestest smoke grenades. so ahmahzing... I also inscribe my sniper bullets with little personalized "hang in there"-style motivational messages. only about 10% of my rockets veer off target. I also mock that wannabe-German scientist about her utter lack of German-speaking skills with relish. seriously, there might be the odd glare of utter contempt when she isn't looking and maybe a German cussword when she is juuuuuuust out of earshot. things could get ugly.
I'd love for the entire game to stretch about 100% in content and length. especially the fighter-vs-ufo bit. another intermediate fighter would be nice, along with more options to outfit them. a second weapon slot like the original had for guns or another slot of slowly reloading missiles if that is your thang. skyranger upgrades would be swell as well.
if you really want to push it you could probably win the game by month 4 or 5 I guess, hardly an epic war-of-the-worlds. meh, still love it

I thought that having two missions pop up at the same time was a bug? At least, I haven't had it happen since the patch, but that could be pure luck I suppose.
I learned this the other day (and it makes sense after realizing it). The clock keeps going when you're on a mission. I had research complete while I was in the field, and when I got back there was a PA announcement for "commander to the research labs." I thought that was pretty dang neat.
Hah I just had an imp/iron game where I skipped a bomb mission and failed the abduction mission. I lost 6 countries in the first month. Too bad the screenshot didn't take for some reason or I would make that my signature.
So, are nicknames assigned at random, or are they keyed into specific in-game things that a soldier does?
Because my current squad leader got the nickname "Congo".
He's a very blonde white dude.
Leading a squad that's comprised of about 1/2 black female soldiers from African nations.
I imagine certain conversations in the Skyranger get...awkward.
As far as I can tell, there's just a separate pool for each class.
As a follow-up, you can see (or edit) the entire list of nicknames in the localization version of the XComeGame.int file, located in:
<SteamFolder>\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XComGame\Localization\INT
There's a list for each class/gender combo.
Hmm. I'm gonna have to add "Fiddler" and "Hedge" to the Heavy list, and make sure "Mama Bear" is there as well to go along with the Papa Bears I keep seeing.

Unless my ctrl + F isn't working.
Also yeah, thin men make me cry on any map where hard cover is both difficult to come by and bunched in the same area.
Don't be scared, you got this.
