Man, I want to play this game so BAD. I know it got a bad rap, but I absolutely LOVED Elemental even from when I first bought it. The Fallen Enchantress hates me, though, no matter what I do I get a crash to desktop as soon as I fire the game up. I've tried everything in the troubleshooting, admin, all that good stuff, no luck whatsoever. I'm itching to play this game like I have hives. Maybe setting up a Fallen Enchantress username will work.
Since I got the game for free (super-generous of the developers) could it be that I don't have Elemental on my computer at this time that the game's bugging out like it is?

I'm wondering if the glitch is me having had Elemental and getting the game that way. I would gladly fork over the money and get Fallen Enchantress through a hard purchase, rather than getting it through the very generous offer of FREE, but wife would murder me for buying games during holiday season when all the gifts have already been bought and wrapped.

I know I've read a lot of people that had it via the giveaway for buying the first game.
I have no idea if having it installed is an issue or it's just your system.
If you have it on steam, i would try to verify the cache. or run steam in admin mode just to see if that helps.

Granted, it's probably something greater but it's always a first step besides redownloading it.

I pre-ordered War of Magic, played it, was lukewarm on it, uninstalled it, played every version of the Fallen Enchantress Beta, and am playing the release of FE as my free gift copy from Stardock with nary a problem (ok, occasionally a crash but I also have 3 monitors and sometimes they go weird cause one runs off a USB to VGA... anyway). Its not anything to do with if you do or don't have War of Magic installed, or did or did not get it as a free copy for buying War of Magic.

I would suggest uninstalling anything Stardock related, deleting any Stardock or Elemental or Fallen Enchantress folders you can find anywhere on your harddrive. This would include C:\ProgramData\Stardock (a folder that is normally hidden) and the folder in My Documents\My Games\FallenEnchantress. Then run regedit search your registry for "enchantress" and delete anything that shows up (nothing important to windows will be named enchantress in the registry, this is fairly safe). Be patient, there will be quite a few entries. Then download the v1.1 installer from store.stardock.com and make a nice clean install and take one more stab at it.

If all that fails, you can find some Stardock Employees in the #Elemental channel of irc.stardock.com (Click here for web aplet to jump straight in!) and try to get some help directly from them, or hit up the Support Forum and make a post. You could also email their Tech Support email address OR try their eSupport Ticket system.

I will get you playing this game god dammit.

Edit: BOY am I dumb...I never installed the Stardock control center or whatever. I played the crap out of Demigod a while ago and when I was done I uninstalled it all the way and everything was gone. I don't think Fallen Enchantress is meant to be run outside of either Stardock or Steam, so hopefully that was the issue. In process now and hopefully I"ll have epix stories soon.

What "Stardock control center" are you talking about, exactly? I can't remember installing anything extra. I downloaded the executable, punched in the serial code, and that was it.

If you're talking about Impulse, Stardock's old digital distribution platform which they eventually sold to Gamestop, then you're mistaken, as I'm pretty sure the free copy of Fallen Enchantress has no association with it whatsoever.

Oh, I see it. I'm not sure that even existed on the web page the last time I downloaded a version of Fallen Enchantress, so I doubt that it has anything to do with the problem. You should have been fine with just downloading the FE installer by itself, in theory.

There's a beta version of patch 1.11 up that fixes some crash issues with the 1.1 patch, as well as the fact that Heroic currently costs 0 picks instead of 2.

They're testing to get this patch set up as official which will have it automatically hitting steam clients, but since it has a big crash fix in it, they put it out as a beta in the meantime. Steam install instructions behind the link (have to subscribe to beta update), and direct download link for everyone else.

@MordaRazgrom - Updated video drivers recently? I would really suggest pursuing the support options through StarDock. At the least it might get you on your newer computer, or a fix for some other crash bugs that might be plauging other players.

Or, maybe this 1.11 beta has your fix in it.

I"m going to get the 1.11 patch, hopefully that'll let me play the game on my spanky new computer. The old computer is fine and works, it just lags a little bit and I have yet to hook speakers up to it (although I care little to nothing about sound and music so it's no big loss for me there), I fired the game up, created a custom race and ruler and all that, and then got my teeth kicked in by a random golem cause I didn't pay attention to how much magic I had...a summoner without summons is...squishy, to say the least.

I'm excited to do more with this game!
Oh the main drawback to my old computer is the constant WRRHRHRHRHRR of the fan. The GPU fan died on it years ago and my fix was to take the case plate off and buy a little desktop fan and point it directly at the GPU. Works well, except I have a fan blowing into my ear the whole time I"m playing.

Being a summoner is difficult, especially in the early game. Early summons are weak/non-existant. There's a very few and none that are accessable with level 1 spellbooks. Ice elemental is Water 3 and is the lowest level summon you can get from a pure school. Nature's Call is Earth/Life 2, but Tactical only. Summon Hero/Familiar require a tech unlock, so you pretty much get Shadow Warg at the outset and then work toward something better. Plus, the +level summoner perks really just add hps and acc, if I recall, not atk/def, but I may be wrong on that one. Summoning needs some love, at any rate, more low level elemental summons, and ways to beef up summons, or better growth as they level.

I beat my head against brick walls all the time in games. Case in point, I played warlock during Vanilla WoW :P Additionally, not a single person can ever tell me that I should stop playing my Diablo 3 Witch Doctor as a pure-DoT caster. I know it's pain, but I accept it gleefully.
I'll make it work somehow! Mostly, at the moment, I'm just tooling around with the game, getting all Sims with how my army is dressed and what they do and use and all that. I won't get to the hardcore tactical stuff till later. I love Civilization, and I love tactics games, this game is both and I love it!

Edit: is there a Silly Goose cap around somewhere? I really need it. The first step, which is to update video drivers, worked like a charm and now I'm playing Elemental on my shiny new computer...I feel like a derp.

I played my first game yesterday on easy after prepping myself by reading the OP's link to the FE forums guide. It still didn't go well.

The biggest issue seemed to be that the "relative strength" indicator or whatever it is on the monster info dialog seems to be a filthy liar. I had a group of my Sovereign (Relias), two heroes, and a summoned serpent guy that I got through a scroll from a quest reward. I see some mounted knights near me, with a relative strength of "weak" or something similar. Once in tactical battle, I see that it is one stack of 3 mounted knights. This "weak" stack proceeds to one-shot both heroes, my sov can barely put a dent in their hit points and ends up going down in two hits, and my serpent, who previously was kickin' ass like nobody's business, goes down in about 3 hits after also barely being able to put a dent in the stack. I think by the time everyone was dead, they probably still had 85% of their life.

This happened with a couple of other encounters and my heroes ended up having so many permanent afflictions that I had to resign. What am I missing here? Shouldn't a "weak" stack be weak?

Yeah... that indicator is pretty much a filthy filthy lie. For your first couple games, I'd suggest saving the game before you fight a new monster. It really is the only way to learn. You can also select the monster and look at its stats from the overworld screen if you are the type that can look at stat blocks and have a good feel for how tough they actually are.

Soon... soon I will install you, my precious.
  • LanrutconLanrutcon The LabyrinthRegistered User regular
The indicator is a very, very loose indication of strength based almost purely off stats alone (not factoring in abilities). Ignore it. With time and experience you'll start to recognize enemy units and judge for yourself.

@datac0re I am on my first "real" game too and learned quickly to ignore those rankings. If you click on the enemy army you can see the units it contains, and you can even drill down further to see the unit stats. That helps when you want to judge strength for yourself.

Also, not sure how viable this will be long term, but running with Magnar heroes and just Slaves as fodder feels so cool. Die in droves my minions, you are worth nothing next to the life of your glorious Quendar masters!

So I picked this up the other day when it was on sale. It's pretty fun!
Just enough like Master of Magic that I have an idea how things shake out, but still different enough that there's new things to learn.

But damn the close up versions of the character models are ugly as fuck. Is there a mod to fix that?

Not really, no. You pretty much get to live with it with the understanding that 95% of the game is played zoomed out to a level that you can't really make out detail that closely. It's a design choice made to increase performance. Loading character models that are different from what is rendered on the strategic/tactical map would consume extra resources, and having prettier character models on the strat/tac map so that the close-ups looked good would wreck performance.

I do agree that anyone familiar with MoM and standard RPG mechanics can jump into this game easier. I wish it could carry the actual MoM license for setting and some gameplay cornerstones, but my understanding is that obtaining that license was a huge/expensive clusterfuck that ended up not being worth it.

I think Stardock has been off for the holidays, so not much offical news lately.

Over the holidays I was able to finish my first complete game with a clear victory for Lord Magnar III. With five opponents - one was “forced” into an alliance or be crushed, three were forced to surrender, and one was completely destroyed. It was great that counted as a diplomatic victory (in an alliance with the last people standing) it felt a very fitting harsh and militaristic “diplomacy” :)

    A091D8AFCC9E3FAC77D4BB91DE13ACD71E2197E7

The problem now is that I enjoyed Magnar so much I want to play them again, but then I also want to try another race / faction. I am leaning heavily towards Yithril and I am guessing I can counter the lack of ranged by praying for some good mage heroes to come my way.

Actually with Yithril you counter ranged by hitting things in the face with a big fucking axe. Seriously, they're super awesome at combat. You get some Juggs, you get some Trog axes, you get some dead enemies, life is good. Earth and Death are just lovely for augmenting your combat as well. Stoneskin + Blind + Curse. Death has shadowbolt now too, just to rub it in. Just rush mounted combat and the mount +moves will make up for your ranged problems. They're probably one of the best balanced and most unique factions now. I wish the other races would get unique units like Juggs, or like all the Resoln binding/spiders.

I think the only really "weak" faction now is Pariden + Procipinee. Her point allocation is just awful. Six points spent on the three arguably weakest offensive magics on a soverign who's faction could make the goddamn books to give her that spell access for a few measly gil.

Heck, I'd consider Magnar probably the next weakest, so if you liked them, it only gets better from there.

All the other factions have something pretty unique and pretty strong going for them. Pariden has some crappy staves that go generally unused/become obsolete fast, a bunch of magic schools with nothing but utility spells, the slowest-to-become-usefull blood ability... the one actually attractive thing they have is the scrying pool access.

Relias has henchmen, xp bonus and quest maps
Tarth has mobility, kickass bows, +3(!) attack in small armies
Gilden and Yithril have awesome unique trained units and your ass on a platter
Kraxis has defensive, betrayers, and diplomat
    Magnar has slaves and warlock
Resoln has some awesome unique spells and shitloads of cool/free units

I'd trade just about any single one of those traits for all the non-scrying pool Pariden traits.

Really :S Maybe it was the difficulty I was playing (the default one), but I found them crazy powerful. Nearly every hero I found early game was Kingdom, so I only had my mage focused Sovereign and a single melee focused hero for a fair while. Both just ran around with armies of disposable slaves who tied up the enemies until I either got close enough to smash them with a axe, or could take them down with magic.

Slaves (both default and custom units) really were my mainstay for a good 80% of the game and really felt to give the army some flavor. At one stage I had four cities each turning out a slave unit each turn - they truly were expendable fodder. It was only late game that I had to switch to some heavy armored, warg mounted shock troops to break the heavy cavalry that I started to face more and more. If Magnar are on the weaker end of the scale I may push the difficulty up a bit for Yithril.

On the topic of Pariden though. I haven't played them at all, but everything about them just sounds a little "meh" - I guess I could always build a custom version of Procipinee with better stats.

Every faction is crazy powerful on default difficulty. Until you hit Challenging+, no faction really starts to separate themselves from the pack (or fall behind it in the case of Pariden).

Yep, until you make it to roughly Expert+, this will generally hold true. Once you bump the difficulty levels up to the point that opponents and monsters start getting hp boosts, you start really needing big armies of supporting troops and/or multiple heroes in an army. I personally consider Expert+ essential for "fun". On Challenging or below, I just faceroll the game with my sov + starting champion, and never really build troops.

Magnar isn't strictly *weak* per se, It's certainly a capable sov and faction, with warlock and fire access. Yithril is a whole different beast, and Verga is a monster, I would certainly tun the difficulty up at least 1 notch.

Yeah, just pluck Enchanters, and perhaps The Decalon, and pair it with better spellbooks. This is the foundation of 90% of my custom factions/sovs.

    Cog on
  • FoefallerFoefaller Registered User regular
Yeah, Enchanters + Decalon is a pretty good basis for a magic-heavy faction, and I can kinda see the logic behind a Sov like Procipinee for a faction with Enchanters; even if Water/Air/Life is piss-poor for combat, some of the best city and unit enchaments IMO come from either those schools, or the mix spells from them (Gentle Rain? Mantle of Oceans?) plus you can grant her Fireball with only a couple of techs. It's when you put both Decalon and a 3-magic sov with Weak and no mana-boosting traits for either the faction or sov together just to complement Enchanters that it falls apart.

Does anybody know why when my Sov shoots a bow the game will occasionally lock up for about 15 seconds?

Or why they felt the need to make it so that adding something to your build queue would also move to the next turn?

How do I stop spawns of 'Strong' ogre shaman packs and other nasties from showing up out of nowhere and smashing my cities? I did set monsters to 'high' but seriously, they spawned when my sov pack was two level 5s in leather armor and a group of early level military units.

Also, is there any way to get defensive bonuses in combat besides doing nothing on a turn? The AI likes to keep hitting the same target until it dies, which is upsetting. I understand that intelligent armies would do it but why are zombies/wolves/spiders/bears doing it?

There's a couple possibilities why that happened:

    1) You're progressing too slowly and you should have been able to handle those Ogre Shamans. (Solution: This will fix itself as you play more)
    2) You settled too close to a lair and disturbed it with your zone of control (Solution: Don't do that!)
    3) An enemy settled too close to a lair (Solution: Try Warden outposts and the Freeze spell. Otherwise, sucks to be you :( )
    4) Your starting location is too close to a Wildlands (Solution: Ctrl + N)

Note that monsters won't always intentionally attack cities. But if you're blocking a choke point they want to path through...
