i looked at the controls, can i turn my dude into a wolf/bat/ i forget the 3rd creature at some point in the game?
Yep. It's very similar to Metroid in this regard - find new powers in order to gain access to new parts of the castle.
As for healing, you are healed to max whenever you save your game. Also, there's a spell that you can use that restores health when you kill enemies; only works on enemies that bleed when killed.

SOTN was the first metroid-vania right? In any case it is awesome and should be bought.
Got into a conversation about this earlier today. I'm still of the opinion that Simon's Quest was the first actual "Metroidvania" game in the series. It may have been rough, but it was the first in the series to really start into the exploration, item gathering and RPG advancement trends that Symphony perfected.
I agree. Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest was the first Metroidvania in the series. However, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is lightyears more advanced than Simon's Quest so it generally gets all the credit.
I've been playing C:SotN for the past couple of hours. Graphics aren't as good as I remember them 10 years ago when the game was new, but they're certainly passable. Everything else, however, completely rocks. Great control, great gameplay, awesome music, and superb level design.

I'm pretty sure you mean "Dark Metamorphosis!" It's super cool, but not particularly useful, especially since there aren't many bleedy-types when you need them.
The even better spell is Soul Steal, which attacks all enemies on screen and gives you life force proportional to the combined health of everyone on screen, but I think there is an upper limit. The downside is that you don't have the MP to cast it when you start the game, so you'll have to try it again after you level up a few times.

I actually thought about Simon's Quest right after I posted that, but honestly I don't remeber it very well since I was pretty young when I played it, and never got very far.

Oh no doubt, Symphony took the whole format to the next level, but Simon's Quest definitely deserves more credit in general for the first attempts at that style.

I believe the 3rd form was Mist. you used it to pass through bars.
my favorite part of the game was when you fought your old comrades from Castlevania 3. Man that was so awesome
Also I never beat
Richter's quest after you beat the game. I just gave up on it because I didn't know he had a super jump by pressing down then up and jump.
Also does anyone know if the XBLA version is the PSX one or the Saturn one?

Yes it's the PSX one. Iga hates the Saturn version with a passion and has disavowed it. Mostly since the extras were all developed by the same branch that did Castlevania Legends. (Which he also hates with an undying passion.)

The commentary on that video was incongruent with the footage. There's a little more slowdown but come on, it's still the same awesome game with some new features. The complaints about the new areas and Maria were way overstated, compared with what was shown.

I've gotta agree with em on the Maria and new areas comments. Maria really does look bad compared to Ricter and Alucard. And the new areas are just awful. I mean yes it's more stuff but more doesn't necessarily make things better. Especially when everything is a bland, or bad looking as that.
I will give you that the slowdown was over-exaggerated though.
This game is awesome. I'm also currently playing through Dawn of Sorrow on the DS (my first Castlevania game since the NES) and I'm noticing how they re-used a fair amount of the creatures and sounds from SOTN in DoS. Very cool to see the connection. Oh, and the music in SoTN is amazing. I just wish there was a way to adjust the music volume independently from the SFX.

He's right about pretty much everything, but let me add a few comments for good measure. It's not fun playing as Richter OR Maria... both modes are hopelessly limited when compared to the main game, with the adventure elements and storyline almost completely stripped away. The awkward Street Fighter-style controller motions required to use Maria's spells get frustrating quickly, too.
My main beef with the Saturn version is that nothing in it shines as brightly as it does on the Playstation. Transparency effects in particular look awful on the Saturn... enemies like the Ectoplasm and Ghost look like they're made of yarn rather than spiritual energy. Also, the death animations don't seem as flashy in the Saturn game. The slowdown is forgivable in most cases, but the lengthy pauses between areas are less tolerable.
Slowdown is a little more irritating when you're actually playing the game, and you encounter it again and again. Could be they weren't exaggerating that part.
quick question, can you buy ms point cards at eb stops and the like? i dont have access to a credit card, and after playing the trial version, i NEED this.

You might pay more for the points ($24.99 for 1600 points? Aw, come on!), but yes.

I'm 15 minutes from leaving the office and thirty minutes from home. I spent most of yesterday and today listening to the soundtrack and I bought a 1600 point card on saturday just for today (and whatever DLC launches with Guitar Hero).
This is going to be the longest 45 minutes in recent memory.
When that game hit PSX, I played it until I was so tired that I was unable to see anything but colored blurs on the screen. I didn't go to class and I certainly didn't eat.
This is definitely my favorite of the whole series.

This is my favorite platformer / castlevania / 2d platformer of all time. However, I always wonder why everyone (myself included) likes this one better than anything in the years since its release. Considering the DS version borrow everything down to the sprites from SotN, why hasn't anything excelled past it yet?
(Keep in mind that I don't have a DS when you answer)
I only briefly played this back in the ps1 days and didnt appreciate it back then....boy o boy how times change.
Glad this games as good as i thought it was gonna be, helps the pain of stalker being a let down =P.

I think it comes down to three things.
First is that the GBA and DS games do not provide the same ambient atmosphere of Symphony of the Night. The music, graphics and style are just not quite as cool and creepy as SotN. SotN really feels like you are exploring an old castle.
Second is that the GBA and DS games are too polished, focusing on their specific gameplay gimmick as opposed to a general sense of adventure. This is similar to the most recent Zelda games and is not a bad thing. It just makes the games feel less special. In SotN, you feel like you can do anything and it feels a lot less linear than it is. The later Castlevanias have a constant feeling that you are doing just what the programmers intended.
Finally, SotN was the first of this new breed of Castlevania that we all played, so it remains the most memorable. Some of the new games try to recapture bits and pieces of SotN but they just are not quite as good as the whole package.
The new ds games, even if they are awesome, do not control as well as sotn, nowhere nere.
Also, 1 billion items with stats like "Big HP restore from cat damage", or the favourite boots that makes your character 1 pixel taller, and thats it. Swords that consumes blood for power etc... They never ever came near this variety again.
Then we have inverted castle Richter, Axe Armor, Luck Mode, Naked Alucard challenge etc.
If you want shit to collect, and challenges to beat, this is the game.
Haven't eaten for 12 hours now, not smoked a cig for 7. This game is like fucking crack to me
Well, here's back to playing... Now i regret taking a break for 2 years from this.
Can anyone else confirm that the Vandal Swords (ghosts that come out of the Sword Lords) are no longer in the game thus removing the Muramasa. I just went through the clock tower ready to kill off vandels tell I got it but none of them popped up
