I really need some lessons on how to play it.
I started tooled round a bit
ran into death WHO STOLE ALL MY SHIT and ended up in the observatory and eventually found some kind of lizzard/bird Boss dude who promptly kicked my arse.
Anyway some questions.
Do I get that stuff back?
What does Y do?
How exactly do you get more health, as I understand it the hearts power your UP + ATTACK item. Where does one find health?
Is the aim of the game simply tool around like I am now? You know beat a boss then go to a new spot? Cause as far as I can tell I can't leave where I currently am.
I'm so horrible at sidescrollers. I knew there was a reason I stayed away from them all these years.
But it's so much fun.
Any tips on getting past the first battle without getting hit? I need me my achievement points!
use the cross's super attack while dracs first form. get in between legs in second form duck and whip till he is no more.
at least thats how I did it.
The first form is pretty easy to do if you played the nes castlevanias heh... its pretty much what he does in those. The second for though... someone else meantioned the holy water item crash, that works pretty well (but actually makes you start with worse stats if I recall).

The items are really good, it would be silly to let you have them that early.
Y is backdash, isn't it? Allows you to move faster if you learn the timing.
Health is gained either from save rooms (press up), or if your out on the field, potions, elixirs and various foods that monsters drop.
After you defeat the first boss (two dudes, Slogra Gaibon or whatever), the game becomes more open. You still have to explore and find new abilities and items to move forward in the game.
Can anyone else confirm that the Vandal Swords (ghosts that come out of the Sword Lords) are no longer in the game thus removing the Muramasa. I just went through the clock tower ready to kill off vandels tell I got it but none of them popped up
say it isn't so.....
I wondered what happened to these, but put it down to my bad memory and the Vandal Swords being in the upside down castle, Surely they havent cut them out of this?
Also the upside down castle cut scene is missing ???

Yes you get the stuff back in the inverted castle. Although you get some stuff that's arguably better. (lol crissagrim)
Y back dashes. Use it to avoid getting hit.
You get health at save points or using potions and such. That's it.
And yes, basically it consists of exploring, killing bosses, and finding new items forms and abilities that allow to explore further into the castle.

I'll assume that the achievement doesn't care how you do it, just that you do it.
Use the holy water's super attack. It's pure cheese and kills Drac in like 3 applications.
How do you do the super attacks?
Up + Y. Just make sure you have enough hearts before going into do the holy water item crash (aka super attack) 4 times I believe. There are plenty of jumbo heart containers if you go into the secret room above the dining table which is opened by whipping the first wall you come to as you walk up the stairs. The first hit should break the brick and the second will hit the switch to unlock the room.
Ha I played this last night for the first time ever. Got through the intro, then explored a bit. Death turns me in a pussy. I continue exploring but eventually die because killing stuff with my fists is not very efficient. Never saw a place to save my game. I'll have to start over completely from the beggining.

Doesn't a short sword fall off, like, the very first skeleton you kill? You have to go into your inventory screen (back button) and equip it to one of your hand slots. A spot to save your game is just beyond that.

Dunno. I reached death, then I went back the way I came. I was first faced with those giant bear/wolf things, then those aquatic monsters that jump everywhere. Didn't notice anything drop.

There's your problem. Don't go back (at least not until you've already LVed up a bunch & gotten better equipment).

There's a rusty sword or something that drops one or two rooms to the right of where you had a chat with smelly ol' Death.
Damn, this thread makes me want to replay this game. Or better yet, get Portrait of Ruin as I haven't played it yet, despite absolutely loving AoS and DoS.
I can't believe how great the music sounds for a 100MB download. Also, was it just my dying PS2, or does this load everything WAY faster? It used to take a good 10 seconds to load a save file, but it just zips along now. I also like being able to voice chat with friends while double-jump-dive-kicking sword lords.
IRT DS games not having atmosphere: Is that the fault of the game or the fault of playing it on a handheld?
Also, does anyone else have a hell of a time casting spells (especially soul steal) with the 360 controller?
Protip: For those new to SotN, use L a lot (it brings up the map), and head to the rightmost portion of the castle. There is a series of staircases next to the wolf elevator, and one of the doors leads you into the library. Head into the leftmost portion of the library to meet the librarian. From him, you can buy the door jewel (opens blue doors) and an incomplete map. You can also pick up some health items from him if you are so inclined.

1) Yeah, it loads much faster... no disc based medium will do that.
2) All the music was redbook on SOTN... now its probably mp3/wma. The size differential makes sense.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
Those are the controls from the PS1 version, and they work fine. I'll check if you can remap though, hold please.
EDIT: Can't change controls.
PS. I'm sittin here listening to the title screen music, it's as beautiful as ever.
Oh yeah. I changed the controls almost immediately upon starting the game. It's been so long, I forgot I had changed them.
So wait, if you could change the controls in the PS1 version, doesn't that mean you need to go into the status menu to change them? Rather than the Arcade start menu? I am away from the game right now and cannot test this.

On the PS1 game, you could change controls through the Status menu. Same location for changing cloak color and all that, I think.
I thought I saw an option to change the controls in the normal start menu under options while I was putzing around... Maybe that just displays the current control settings tho.

You can indeed. Press Back, go to System, and then Button settings. Up and down to select the function, and left and right to select which button to assign to it.

Excellent. It was annoying the piss out of me that start didn't bring up the game menu

The bat familiar is designed for use in bat mode. When in bat mode, the familiar follows closely and also imitates your fireball attack.
