I just beat the snake lady water thing a mah whatsit boss. I feel sort of cheap because she knocked me behind her and I was pretty much invincible from then until her defeat. Is this a well known exploit?

Hahahaha
Welcome to the Symphony of the Night boss fights
Wow. It really is laughable how exploitable some of these fights are. Such as
The dude who summons the crows. I kept losing to him, until I realized I could pin him into the corner and get him into an infinite loop of moving up and down... no attacking whatsoever.
Yeah, that's why the trouble people seem to have is surprising. Besides one optional boss, the most dangerous parts of Symphony are a few random hallways.
Edit: Also, this optional boss is easily broken in several ways, I'm just not counting the more basic and generic methods. SotN is fan-fucking-tastic, but man.
Nobody calls them Castleroids... nobody with a brain, anyway. That's the worst portmanteau ever, sounding like something even a proctologist wouldn't want to touch.

Still, a great game. But man, do I feel cheap.
This is how all the SotN boss fights work. Bosses look great and have tons of personality and several cool looking attacks and animations, but you ever get to see any of them because short of running into them over and over again they pose no real threat.
Neo Rasa on

What the hell do I do with the Merman Statute? How exactly do I summon the rower, and for what purpose? I figure it probably lets me swim or something if I can figure it out, but I can't seem to make heads or tails as to how to use it.
There's an additional oarsman area down there. I believe you have to crack the floor in a certain spot to get to it. If my memory serves me right it's directly under the big ass drop that takes you to the caves. Just keep heading down until you find a floor that's frozen only in the left corner and then smash it.
That will take you to a second oarsman spot where he'll only appear if you have the statue.
WTF! How do I save? I was like 20 minutes into the game!\
EDIT: N/m. I called a friend.
There is NO explanation of those weird rotating cube rooms. Pressing up on it is totally unintuitive, but reminds me of Super Metroid. Anyway, I got to the two demons like three times before I beat them, expecting a save point just after. Then I died like 20 minutes after...
I've gotten to the broken outside staircase... I recall in previous Castlevania games one needed an item to go up it without falling, but I can't seem to find such an object anywhere. What's worse, I just spent a good half hour or so exploring, getting all sorts of money and items, and I ended up inadvertently losing my lightning... I didn't feel like getting it again, so I quit. Ugh. I hate it when you hit a candle expecting gold or a heart, and instead you get some shitty ability that you didn't want but then when you try to get your old one back, it's too late. Grr.

Now that you have that item, you have to break through a section of the caverns. It's towards the center of the area. It's a slightly icy spot a the very bottom of that huge drop from the rest of the castle.

Are you referring to the staircase just outside where you fought dracula at the beginning? If so, just press down up and jump to do your super jump across. You can contiunously do it in the air until you're across.
Hmm, it seems I may have reached an area before I should have. I haven't obtained the super jump ability yet. Oh well, I'll just explore some more I suppose.
One ring is obtained by defeating the succubus, for the other you need the spike breaker armor from the catacombs and then you head across this long spike filled tunnel in the Chapel to speak with Maria. The item
description of the two rings give you your next clue.
Edit: Removed the statue in the clock tower explaination as I was beat'd.
Sorry I read your post totally wrong. For some reason I was assuming you were playing as Richter. I have no idea why. Heh.
To get up there you need the bat form or a prolonged mist form. Keep looking around the castle and you'll find em.
Thanks for the heads up.
I think I've found something... but I need help getting to it.
In the section with the machinery filled with harpies and medusa heads, there are three "gears" that move when I hit them. There's also a door closed-off with what looks like a gate. Somehow I feel these three gears and the gate are related. The only problem is, I can't seem to find how. Any suggestions?
I can't wait to find more to do, just grinding around what feels like a fully explored castle is discouraging when you know it's not and can't find that one little bit of new access.
One trick is to pull up the map and look for cracks in the white border surrounding the rooms. If it's not a solid white border, there's a secret you're missing there.

You don't even know the half of it. Seriously, not even half.

I can definitely tell that there is a doorway here... but it's closed down. And I have a feeling the gears may have something to do with it...

I think you need to hit each set of gears until you hear a click from each.
And maybe you aren't allowed to be hit in the process?

Just make sure to not to hit the gears after the click. Put away the familiar for that part.
Well the good news is I got the door open by hitting the gears. The bad news is all I got was some lousy items. I'm back to square one now. Is there anything significant about?
the room with the giant clock in it? I noticed on every minute the statue on the left disappears so that I can get through... but what about the one on the right?

I believe you'll be able to get in if you activate the Clock subweapon when in the room.

Do you know offhand where I can get the lighting subweapon? I've been keeping it for a long time and I'd hate to lose it for too long.

a room straight above the clock has all of the subweapons in test tubes

So I can get to Maria in like 6 or 7 minutes and that gets updated on the 360 scoreboard thing everytime I do better, but when I get to Cerebrus it doesn't update. I got there at like 1 hour and 30 minutes the first time, and now I can get there in 15 minutes but it doesn't update, and if it did it would make me the 1st person on the board. It's not really a big deal but I was just wondering if anyone else has any problems like that.

Right, but I can't access that area yet.
Just head to the right a few rooms; there's one down there somewhere.
Man, so I just beat the Inverted Castle last night, and started looking up random stuff on GameFAQs to see what I missed. I can't believe that I went through the whole game without ever using the Gravity Boots. I mean, I had them, and I think at one point I tried to push D,U+Jump, but when I couldn't get it to work the first time I just stopped trying. Also, it wasn't until near the end of the game that I found out that
The shield rod lets you cast a spell on your shield by equipping both and pressing X+B. Doing this with the Alucard Shield makes you practically invincible!
what I should equip to get past the crappy ending? Having played AoS, I know for a fact that there's more to this game than "OLOL RICHTER U R DUMB I WILL GO NOW BYE"

You need a Spike Breaker shield (for the chapel in the West.) Explore all the bottommost parts of the castle for this. You also need the Echo of Bat, to see in the dark.
The clock in the center of the level is extremely important. If you hang around for one minute, an area will open above you to meet the vampire Olrox.
You need two rings, a gold and silver one, as well as the Stopwatch to open up another compartment in the big clock.

I have the gold ring and need to find the silver one.
Also, what's the deal with the clock, I've never had the right side open to fly up there yet. Do I really have to wait it out for a specific time?

Time to go fill in the gaps and try Richter mode.
