We have a gamestop kids opening in the mall nearby. It's in the store directly below the normal GS. The dude I talked to said that it is, indeed, teen and below only. Also that they initially plan not to sell any used games at those locations.
Oh, also, they'll have an entire wall dedicated to Skylanders.
Okay, @Aegeri, I shall put this simply for you. I am not saying she is under attack because everyone is a misogynist. I am saying that idiots were very quick to turn a legitimate issue, that of game critic integrity, into personal and misogynistic attacks. Question her integrity, question that of others, go right ahead and be my guest, but diverting it into personal insults, attacks and threats? That is never cool, no matter what a person has written about video games. Can you see what I'm saying?
Written about video games - absolutely. Anita Sarkeesian Is a great example of how that is utterly wrong. But let's add to that blatantly lying and threatening financially disasterous lawsuits as a weapon against people she dislikes? Oh wait, that doesn't suit your argument as it's quite a bit different isn't it?
Speaking of, did she ever actually deliver any of the webisodes or whatever that she promised?
Although she claimed she'd be working on the project "full time" after the success of the kickstarter campaign, other than posting a picture of her with a smug as shit grin on her face sitting behind a pile of games it looks like she hasn't actually produced anything, let alone any of the videos that she said she was going to use the kickstarter funds for, and her website hasn't been updated in three months.
It looks a lot like she was "utterly wronged" all the way to the bank. I wonder how all of the armchair feminists are going to feel if it turns out that she bamboozled everyone out of $160,000.00
IIRC, she only gives progress updates to her kickstarter backers. I didn't back the project, so I wouldn't know for sure, but that's what I've heard. In any case, I'm sure playing through all of those games takes some time, especially if she's pulling footage from them and taking notes and stuff like that.
Her last update to her backers was two months ago. Also, either she's not approving tweets asking her for progress, or no one has asked her for progress anytime in the past four months. One seems more likely than the other.
Four months of full time work is a long time to not release a single video. Seems a little fishy.
I don't think it's such a long time. If you're playing every significant game in recent memory (as seems to be the case here) for research, then writing the scripts for the video, pulling footage from the game (which might mean playing through the game again just so you can get to the specific spot that you need footage from), editing it and so on, then that takes time. Time that she can afford to take, thanks to that huge amount of money from the kickstarter. Add in the talks that she's been doing at development houses and college campuses and what not and I can see why she hasn't put anything out publicly yet. Also, she's still playing games, it looks like--she posted a couple of tweets about Dishonored a couple of days ago.
I dunno. I just don't see a reason why we should suspect her of taking the money and running at this juncture.
Didn't we already exhaustively discuss GameStop Kids last week? And most parents here were in favor of it because most Gamestops now are just tits, ass, and gunmetal on every in-store display

Grand Theft Auto V will be released for Xbox 360 and PS3 in spring 2013, Rockstar Games has announced, confirming rumours sparked by photos of retail displays leaked over the weekend.
Founder Sam Houser said: “Grand Theft Auto V builds on everything we’ve learned about open-world game design. We can’t wait to share it with fans.” In a press release, publisher Take-Two said the game “delivers a world of unprecedented scale and detail bursting with life, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean.”
Pre-orders begin on November 5; as we pointed out yesterday, a May release seems likely, though publisher Take-Two might prefer it to launch in March so that its doubtless gargantuan sales revenue can be included in its year-end accounts. More information is expected in the coming weeks, as the game features on the cover of the next issue of US magazine Game Informer.

Same company in the end, but EB doesn't have the same face recognition as Gamestop. So this might actually take off. What bothers me is the following concept: regular Gamestop becomes the dudebro store to the point where it's the only kind of game they stock, so things like Mario and Etrian Odyssey and anything else ends up in Gamestop Kids because they have have color palettes.
I absolutely understand I'm probably alone in this, but I would love to see EA throw MOH back to what it was on the PSOne. It was a great single player story based game that felt more like playing an old 60s/70s war movie. It was full of amazing moments, not a super violent/gritty portrayal of war. It was essentially you as the star of a heroic military flick. The historic footage mixed in totally added to the feel of the game.
I'd love to see this played out with today's technology. Like playing an old black and white army movie your grandfather might watch. The competition is just too stiff in the Battlefield/COD arena at this point.
The first Medal of Honor was an incredibly atmospheric WWII FPS on the PS1. It was a story about people doing incredibly heroic deeds, and it personified this through its tagline, "Prepare for your finest hour".
When I say atmospheric, I mean unlike anything that had been released before. A driving soundtrack yes, but the ambient noises coupled with the way that the gunfirebroke itself apart from the audio that was playing, the level design that had incredibly detailed textures, and the emphasis on real weapons set it apart. And it made sense, because Stephen Spielberg was involved.
The AI was revolutionary for its time. Enemies would react to wounds in certain areas of their body, and enemies would take cover and take potshots at you. If they found you hiding in a ventilation shaft they would throw grenades in. If you threw a grenade, a single soldier might kick it away or pick it up and throw it back, but if you threw a grenade at a group of them one of them might jump on top of it to sacrifice himself to save the others. If you threw a grenade at a dog, sometimes it would carry it back to it's trainer.
The game came out right as the popularity of the WWII "epic story" was really heating up. Saving Private Ryan had just released, and Band of Brothers was just two years away.
Then the WWII video game craze hit and did not stop until gamers became sick of it. While we've had some time away from the era, and a new WWII FPS might be nice, I can't help but think that all of the stories have already been told, and there would be nothing new to do. I can't even remember how many times I've stormed the beach at Normandy or cautiously made my way through a wartorn European city or planted explosives on the side of a rickety tank.
That, and the fast paced arcadey style of manshooting that gamers demand now doesn't really seem like it would fit well in a realistic WWII setting without turning it into something like Wolfenstein.

In its current form, I'm not even sure why MoH exists, strictly speaking.
They turned it into "just another multiplayer focused military shooter", but they've already got Battlefield.

Well, Vice City added purchasable lots as extra safehouses/ways to get money. SA I think pushed the PS2 pretty hard given it's size . GTA4 had a lot more details and less loadscreens, but that was due to better hardware. Not sure what 5 can add really.
Looks like GTAV is going to be a lot like San Andreas. Various forms of transportation like bicycles, ATVs, planes. New terrain like deserts, mountains, and lots of elevation changes (unlike GTAIV's Liberty City) because the city is supposed to be like LA.

I half expect Rockstar to parody Saint's Row at some part.
Probably with you beating up a bunch of guys in purple with a bat while their floppy foam thing proves useless. And if they flat out parody Saints Row then it's just the whole circle coming complete....it's like poetry.

Like the 2010 reboot, these games are supposed honor and serve as a tribute to these men and women.
According to John Walker's article on RPS, the game doesn't acknowledge that there are women soldiers.
We don't allow women in combat positions though so it makes sense in a game that is all about our men commiting some homicide. Of course, you can play as people from other countries in the multiplayer so it makes a lot less sense there.

So far at least, this is one store opening, right? It's opening near the company headquarters in Grapevine, TX.
This is a concept store. If it does really well you'll see it expand to major cities, but I don't think it will change the layouts of the vanilla Gamestop stores in any way. Other concept stores were tremendously successful and never changed Gamestops (stores with couches and console-arcades, Moviestop, Gamestop and Movies Too, etc).

Well, how about this? They have the engine built at this point. What if they take that engine and make say 5 episodes of single player game from various vantage points of the same war that haven't been done before. Maybe a non-violent game where you play as a nurse and have to safely treat soldiers without getting hit yourself, or a sort of Sound of Music themed chapter where you play as a family in Austria trying to escape across the border, or maybe an Aladdin meets Germany where you play as a Jewish orphan in a large city using stealth to avoid being caught but still find food/safe shelter?
There are a ton of vantage points to that time period that haven't been touched that could carry that Medal of Honor title and stay true to the theme of heroism and great single player stories that the PSOne games had. Do them as downloads to PC/360/PS3 on existing engines and it would appeal to a lot of fans of the originals at a fairly low investment/risk.

Its been a while, but I think there were a couple female helicopter pilots in the game. The bulk of the game was about those Tier 1 guys, which I assume are mainly male, or at least mainly male in MoH because of the area of the world it took place in. A dude with a big ol bushy beard is less conspicuous than a woman just kind of hanging out.
Also, re: GTA V
Was there anything official announced about the next batch of microsoft consoles? I know we were talking about it a few weeks ago, but I don't remember the specifics. I think 2014 was a safe bet? I was just thinking that if MS was smart they'd hand Rockstar the ol' Chapeau de ...Money and hang onto GTA V as a launch title.
Seems like that would be a sure fire way to sell alot of units right away.

On a serious note, I've really liked the Black Ops ads. They're effective. And they're not saying "war is fun" so much as "games are fun and fucking everyone plays CoD, now open your goddamn wallet."
Frankly it's a little distressing to suggest that a video game writer is totally discredited because they didn't hate the ending of one video game with the fire of a thousand suns.
Some people really hated that ending. Trust is a fickle thing.

I have no idea where the game takes place or anything but... If its anywhere near the front line, then this is just common sense. At least in the US military, women are not assigned to grounds operations or occupational forces. Of course that doesn't mean they couldn't have tried to shoehorn it in. Or done something realistically feasible like a base defense or something wherein a female soldier would be present.
Then again, I'm sure the statistical demographic doesn't support cramming women into dudebro shooters.

Some people really hated that ending. Trust is a fickle thing.
It isn't even about having the wrong or right opinion - it's about actually knowing what the other person is saying correctly in the first place. Most of the major offenders of this at the time demonstrated no clue what anyone disliked about them.
I guess my point is that I interact with people on this forum everyday about games, I talk to IRL friends about them and I generally play enough games that I know what I want. Frankly, I can't think of the last game I bought based on a review in the past 2 years.
Do I even need them anymore? I mean I can find out if a game sucks or not by reading its thread on this forum for an hour or so. I usually know what I want regardless of reviews anyway, like Borderlands 2, XCOM and Dishonored, which I bought recently and not a single one did I read a review before deciding to buy them.

A resounding nope. If you're using game reviews to buy games you don't talk to enough other people about games, especially here on Penny Arcade.
They just changed the picture to something not provided by MS. Well, it appears they were using an MS provided image because some other sites reporting and/or copy pasting the press release are using the same exact image.

It isn't really an advertorial because they weren't paid for it. This really proves the Eurogamer article's point. The website received a lot of cash from MS so basically copying and pasting this shit is going to look bad even if they were just being lazy like they probably were.
Square Enix has revised its consolidated results forecast as a result of "sluggish sales" of "major arcade machines that were released during the three month-period ended September 30, 2012" revealing an expected loss of over $13 million according to a press release from the company.
"In addition, sales of a major HD game title have been growing at a slower pace than expected," the press release reads. "Another negative factor in the Digital Entertainment business segment is delays of social game service launch, which resulted in [a] decrease of service revenues and up-front expenditure of development costs."
Square Enix revised its sales for the period ending Sept. 30, 2012 downward 19.7 percent.
Looking forward, Square Enix has also revised its forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, citing the reasons above and "uncertainties of the business environment, which is estimated as continuing in the second half of the fiscal year."
Square Enix had made its original forecast on May 14, 2012.
Is there a reason that video game websites both with slightly altering the contents of press releases instead of just saying, "hey, here is a fucking press release with a deal you might be interested in if you live in the UK."

Oh, also, they'll have an entire wall dedicated to Skylanders.
You know, I was expecting this ages ago, like around when this thread started.

October 24?
Sporky, I'm gonna hit you with a cartoon hammer. :P I meant as a concept years ago.
Oh boy, I can't wait to see what film the game parodies.
I've gotta ask at this point; aside from different narratives, what do GTA sequels provide at this point? What is GTA V going to allow that's new gameplay-wise?
There's a pretty clear bias that comes across in his post that makes it clear exactly why he suspects her.
In its current form, I'm not even sure why MoH exists, strictly speaking.
They turned it into "just another multiplayer focused military shooter", but they've already got Battlefield.
It's confusing.
They copied Call of Duty in a lot more ways, especially if you have played Modern Warfare 3.
There's probably some fan loyalty there too. Like "Namco, do you really need Tekken? It's not like Soulcalibur is going anywhere."
Well, Vice City added purchasable lots as extra safehouses/ways to get money. SA I think pushed the PS2 pretty hard given it's size . GTA4 had a lot more details and less loadscreens, but that was due to better hardware. Not sure what 5 can add really.
According to John Walker's article on RPS, the game doesn't acknowledge that there are women soldiers.
I half expect Rockstar to parody Saint's Row at some part.
Probably with you beating up a bunch of guys in purple with a bat while their floppy foam thing proves useless. And if they flat out parody Saints Row then it's just the whole circle coming complete....it's like poetry.
Ghoulish is one way of putting it...
We don't allow women in combat positions though so it makes sense in a game that is all about our men commiting some homicide. Of course, you can play as people from other countries in the multiplayer so it makes a lot less sense there.
The whole spiel about honoring the people in combat for these games always seemed really weird. I don't know about Warfighter, but Call of Duty has stuff like this:

WAR IS FUN!
Video fails for lack of best chef ever.
On a serious note, I've really liked the Black Ops ads. They're effective. And they're not saying "war is fun" so much as "games are fun and fucking everyone plays CoD, now open your goddamn wallet."
Some people really hated that ending. Trust is a fickle thing.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.
Sleep in? Call in sick to work?
Unless they're half naked in which case the dudebro demo will go crazy.

Polygon's very first news story EVER
The before comments on Polygon. I say before because someone started deleting comments there.
Nothing to see here folks!
