I mean, the Wii is dirt cheap anyway and pretty much everybody has one already. Coupled with the fact that they literally just released the WiiU I really don't see where they're going with this and who their target audience is. If anything, it's gonna negatively impact WiiU sales.

The easiest argument against this is that the Playstation 2 sold for many years after the Playstation 3 was available at retail.

Also, you can't really make such a blanket statement as "pretty much everybody has one already". Someone may see the $99 price tag, want to play New Super Mario Bros Wii and Mario Kart, and feel like that's a perfectly acceptable price for such a console.

Why would it negatively impact Wii U sales?

But if they want NSMB Wii, wouldn't they be better off buying the regular Wii system that has NSMBW in it? Same price as buying a mini Wii + the game and you get a better system.

The New Super Mario Bros. Wii bundle you're referring to hasn't been produced for some time and depending on the store you're shopping at, may not be available anymore. The standard Wii bundle now includes both Wii Sports, and then there's Skylanders and Just Dance bundles for the holidays.

The Canadian wii bundle is a black wii with nsmbw and a soundtrack cd for $150. So it you wanted a wii and mario it would prpbably make more sense to get that one. We dont get the sports bundle up here.

Myself i dont want nsmbw, want a wii, dont care about any of the online or wii shop stuff. So i plan on getting a mini when they launch.

So you're the target audience! :D

I mean it certainly looks kinda neat, but as for actual value for money you're not getting an all that much better deal on the MinWii.

If the entire target audience is like me and just getting a wii to play some rpgs, then the mini wont do so well and never get a release outside Canada. At least it will be a rare collectors item then.

If your in the usa then yes that is. But seeing as the mini is only in Canada for now and we dont get that bundle here its no use comparing them.

The "standard" wii bundle in Canada is this for $150

That is weird. It comes with NSMBW, and the soundtrack to a different game? Also that is a picture of a Wii Remote with the Motion+ attachment, not the Wiimote with Motion+ integrated -- surely it doesn't come with that?

It has a black Wiimote condom on it looks like which probably explains the weird shape. It's most likely just a single Motion+ controller. At least, I would think...

I'm sure it's just a poor marketing image, probably put together not by Nintendo. But yeah, on the actual Motion+ Controllers the "Wii" text at the bottom is actually basically at the bottom of the controller, even with the condom on, instead of an inch from the bottom.

I was thinking I would grab a MiniWii and give my old Wii to my mom, but I was kind of hoping that the smaller enclosure would also mean that they got rid of the power brick (like the last model small PS2). Just having one thin power cable as opposed to a huge grey brick would've been really nice for keeping my setup tidy.

Yeah, I have that one, the integrated new version is as big as a regular wiimote even with the condom. The one in the canadian photo is the old wiimote with an separate motion+ accessory which comes INSIDE the weird condom.

Here's the problem with that, and why I HATE built in power supplies:

Yes, they are neat and tidy. Power supplies are also one of the most likely parts on a device to die. And there is nothing worse than having a device with an internal, unreplacable power supply just die on you and brick the entire thing. ESPECIALLY in this day and age when there are less people who know how to repair such devices.

Plus, internal power supplies generate large amounts of heat.

Awesome, damn awesome. I was worried about the sales of this title but it's great to hear it's doing that good and yeah it really was rocking the Steam charts. Being fifty percent off helps with that.

It could be argued that the continued support for PS2, and the continued support for the DS are two examples in which they might have had a negative effect on the sales of their successor.

A PS2 sale or a Wii sale is probably making Sony or Nintendo many times more profit than either of their successors would.

Though with the existence of used games and assuming the consumer was smart enough to actually buy the console, probably not much after that.

I'm not really excited about the standard Wii library, so a Wii that doesn't have NetFlix, Virtual Console, or GameCube support seems like a pretty bad deal to me. Cutting out network support seems like a dick move when wifi cards and ethernet ports are super cheap to manufacture and removing them removes every feature from the system other than "Play Wii game".

A used game/music shop near me had a used GC compatible model selling for $35 a while back. The hilarious part was that GameStop was running a deal where you got $60 in trade in credit for a Wii at the time.

  • The WolfmanThe Wolfman Registered User regular
Nixing the Gamecube BC made sense. I myself bought one of those, and I don't really miss it at all, and I have an actual GC if the mood strikes me. And the only other thing missing due to that are the GC controller ports, but in a world where the CC Pro exists, that's not a big deal either.

No online though? That's just nuts. Shit, a lot of the dinky bells and whistles of the Wii use online, like the weather/news/Mii channels. And the online shop isn't on par with PSN or Live, but there's still some great stuff there. Not to mention the free games you can nab from Club Nintendo.

Are we sure it isn't a misprint or something? Cutting out the wireless in lieu of a wired connection, that makes sense. Especially in a cost cutting way which this obviously is. But ripping out ALL online? That's loco.

The fine print on the Nintendo Wii Mini site says this:
"The Wii mini console does not connect to the Internet and does not support online features in games.
Compatible with Wii software and accessories. Internet connectivity features are not available.
The Wii mini console is not compatible with Nintendo GameCube Game Discs or accessories."

so it has no online capabilities, unless it can use a usb wired adapter, but I'd probably say no on that too.

    From my desk to yours:

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-11-28-grand-theft-auto-franchise-hits-125-million-shipped
At the Credit Suisse Technology Conference today, Take-Two Interactive chief executive officer Strauss Zelnick said that the Grand Theft Auto series has reached 125 million units shipped. No breakdown was given for the numbers, which stand ahead of the 114 million number cited by Zelnick on September 2011. At that time, Grand Theft Auto IV accounted for 22 million units, but a Take-Two representative told GameSpot that GTA IV alone has shipped 25 million units to date.

I have to admit, I'm kind of trying to find a way to justify buying one of the Mini Wiis - I don't play Nintendo first party titles, so the lack of a pack-in doesn't bug me, and I haven't taken either of the Wiis I have now online to do anything more than putz around with the weather app.

    Plus it looks neat.

    So yay, anecdote.

In more anecdote, I keep seeing Wii Us in stock - only the basic model, to be fair, but it really seems like one of the better console launches from the perspective of actually being able to buy one for list price without some crazy bundle or from some scalper on craigslist/ebay. So good on Nintendo for having a decent supply on hand this time. :)

The Mini Wii not supporting any online is baffling. I mean, at the very least it should support USB internet, right?

Maybe it really is the Wii emulation from the wii U, which also doesn't have any online features from what I could see.

Here's your justification: It's a being released in one country (Canada! What is that?) and in limited numbers, and Nintendo has the most die-hard zealot fans outside of Apple and Honda.

You'll pick it up for 99 and be able to sell it used for 300 to a collector in a year from now if you're bored of it.

Honestly, the basic set ain't that bad. The stands are kinda whatever, and a 32GB HDD isn't going to last you long. Nintendoland is the one real standout there, and I admit to be very lukewarm on it. Oh, and it's black? I guess that matters to people.

I am surprised that Deluxes are sold out everywhere. Knowing the general public, I expected them to just snap up the cheapest package. I guess it doesn't take much to realize that the set with the game is the better deal.

I'm consistently shocked by how many people are still hung up over Gamecube backwards compatibility. For fuck's sake, no games have been released for the thing in six years.

I don't hear nearly as much bitching & moaning over the PS3 not supporting PS2 games.

When people talk about wanting backwards compatibility, they generally aren't giving any fucks about new games, but about the stuff they already own, or titles they maybe missed because they didn't own the original console. And there was PLENTY of annoyance with the way Sony handled the PS2 stuff.

    Nope.

Let me make this simple for you.

If your Wii U "dies" for any reason, give Nintendo a ring. They'll fix it for you. If it's unfixable, they'll transfer your content to a new console. Problem solved.
