I'm consistently shocked by how many people are still hung up over Gamecube backwards compatibility. For fuck's sake, no games have been released for the thing in six years.

I don't hear nearly as much bitching & moaning over the PS3 not supporting PS2 games.

Were you actually around and paying attention when that went down?

Because I don't think you were. If you're talking like that. Seriously talking like that.

Like, people still complain about that now. So of course people are going to be mad about no GC BC.

But how long does Nintendo need to keep that up to make everybody happy? Should the Wii U have played Wii AND Gamecube games? Should the Wii U successor have to play Wii U, Wii, and Gamecube games?

Should the 3DS play GBA, GBC, and GB games in addition to 3DS and DS?

Honestly, the basic set ain't that bad. The stands are kinda whatever, and a 32GB HDD isn't going to last you long. Nintendoland is the one real standout there, and I admit to be very lukewarm on it. Oh, and it's black? I guess that matters to people.

I am surprised that Deluxes are sold out everywhere. Knowing the general public, I expected them to just snap up the cheapest package. I guess it doesn't take much to realize that the set with the game is the better deal.

There's also the 10% back on digital purchases with the Deluxe which, if you're planning on buying a lot of games digitally, could really add up.

That'll come in handy when your console dies and you lose all your digitally purchased games, forcing you to buy them a second time.

I doubt that's how it'll work. See: Steam.

The 10% back on digital purchases thing almost got me to break my rule about no launch consoles.

Fortunately once they all sold out everywhere my decision was a lot easier.

I think people generally accept the last generation for the full go fine enough. The Wii U being able to BC Wii games and the 3DS being able to BC DS games are fine enough. It's just that when one thing does a thing at the start, and then gets rid of it that it becomes hairy because of less perceived value. That's the main reason why the PS3 thing went over so poorly because people didn't have a high valuation of the console at the time anyway and then it did something that, in a lot of people's eyes, just gave it that much less purpose to own. And personally, I was a little miffed when the DSi came out and dropped the GBA port, mostly because I played a shit-ton of Pokemon and made extensive use of Pal Park which needed that. If the Wii U drops Wii support in a further iteration, or if the 3DS gets another revision that won't read DS carts, people will get mad at that too. But if the thing after the Wii U doesn't support Wii games? Kind of expected.

I think he's talking about how previous nintendo accounts used to be tied to the console, rather than the account. But they changed that for WiiU, right?

    Nope.

Let me make this simple for you.

If your Wii U "dies" for any reason, give Nintendo a ring. They'll fix it for you. If it's unfixable, they'll transfer your content to a new console. Problem solved.

So, Nintendo is going to repair broken WiiUs that are out of warranty? Is that what you are saying? What if you don't have another WiiU for them to transfer the games to?

I had to sell my PS3 last year, but all of the games I bought from the PSN will still be waiting for me when I can get around to buying another PS3. It could be tomorrow, it could be a year from now, it doesn't matter. They're on my account, and the account moves from system to system with me.

Attaching purchases to a console instead of an account is amateur hour, and you would have to be a blind Nintendo fanboy to think otherwise. It's just another example of Nintendo not having its shit together when it comes to consoles and the internet.

The argument was about losing games if the console broke, not about being able to sell it and rebuy it a year later and get the content back.

I just saw via Twitter that even though Microsoft is reporting there's 80 million sales for Windows 8 (not money brought in, like copies sold), there's only actually 15 million activated / in use.

I never thought backwards compatibility was a big deal until the Vita. No UMD support, no PS1 classics at launch, still lacking full compatibility with PSP titles on the PSN... BC is a balm people can apply to justify "upgrading" to their new, entirely too expensive consoles and removing functionality cripples that, but at this point in the Wii's lifecycle and as cheap as it is I don't think it's a big deal.

The bigger problem is region locking on new consoles, because that is a future facing problem that will always be an issue.

People buying the cheap upgrade but not installing it yet

Also, thank god the Wii has GCN bc, I sold my GCN to buy a Wii, then I had to use the money for other things, and I was without a GCN for years, till I got money again and got a wii.

I don't want to be unable to play GCN games, EVER. I love ED and SoA and MP and MGS TS and the right LoZ:TP version and MKDD and all those GCN games I own.

The only reason I need to have a PS2 is no BC on PS3.

I'm keeping my DSL for the GBA slot.

So I like BC on my machines, yeah.

It's an image @Lanrutcon. One of the pieces of the Bungie art leak is an exact replica, except the helmet, of a soldier from a Game Informer cover (which was featuring Command and Conquer I think).

It showed once for me and then got taken down. The gun, the hand posture (which was a fairly unique two finger point), the body shape... literally the only difference was the helmet.

Well, it's just concept art, it's not uncommon for an artist to base the composition on other images. I hope it wasn't supposed to be an active part of the product.

Yes, Nintendo repairs systems out of warranty. I believe the flat rate is $75, which is much cheaper than buying a new Wii U anyway.

Hot damn, checked out the thread somebody made for the game. It looks/sounds pretty sweet. That one piece of Tiberium ripoff art looks to me like somebody was hastily throwing some concept art together. If it is a real Bungie leak, that image is probably a super early piece of concept art.

    Ah.

In other news RPS has a nice article about the current status of a bunch of kickstarted games.

One surprise is that the Pathfinder Online tech demo was finished on time and they apparently have funding to make their MMO or at least get started.

[edit] Well that's what the article said. They also have a Kickstarter for <raises pinky to mouth corner> 1 million dollars for the game itself. Someone in the comments pointed that out.

Buy at launch for the cheap launch price, but wait for SP1 to come out before actually installing the thing? That's probably statistical noise if the gap really is 65 million copies though :)

It could also count licenses sold to OEMs and sitting on computers still in the channel that haven't been sold to consumers yet. That'd be my honest guess.

Bungie has confirmed it. It is far more likely that this is contracted out work and whoever was told to make the mock up didn't really give much of a shit because who is going to know or care as long as it works as a mock up?

Reading the "risks and challenges" section of the Pathfinder Online kickstarter makes me wonder how it compares to what Rhode Island got told about Amalur.
Because Goblinworks has the funding to make Pathfinder Online, even if the timeline is a long one, there is only a very small chance that the game will never see release. One of the largest costs for a computer game project of this scope is the costs for people. If there are significant delays that prevent us from releasing the game to paying customers on time, we would need an influx of capital to make it to the later release. If we couldn’t get that capital, then the release of the game could be in jeopardy. Also, if we were to lose a key member of our staff, it could impact our ability to produce the game. Thankfully, we have contracts in place for all of our key staff, so it would take an extraordinary situation for us to lose one of them.

The key Goblinworks staff has started and grown many successful companies. They have seen MMO games through to completion. In any project of this scope, there will be unseen challenges that will spring up, but the depth of experience of our staff makes us confident that we will be able to meet those challenges head on and defeat them.

To my mind that doesn't really convey the difficulty of bringing a MMO to market.

I guess I don't even understand the reasoning behind a classic Wii refresh at this point. Why refresh the hardware on a dead console and directly compete with yourself on a brand new product that you would like to see adopted into every household as the gaming machine of choice?

Why is Nintendo undercutting potential Wii U sales with a classic Wii refresh. I don't get it.

Yeah, this. I don't get why people are like "OH THIS IS A BIG DEAL" or think it's funny. When a game is being concepted, tons of artists throw a ton of work at it to set a tone - a lot of it is copied from other work, or is just used wholesale. Think of a movie pitch. A lot of directors straight use scenes from other movies for ideas to show how they want to handle a shot or an angle.

As for copying art, as long as it's just internal concept art, I'm not seeing the big deal. You can plagiarize on internal materials all you want.
